SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 17-year-old has been arrested for social media threats to a Carmel Valley high school.San Diego Police said the juvenile was taken into custody Monday at school during an investigation into threatening comments issued online against Canyon Crest Academy, which is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District. The teenager has been placed in Juvenile Hall for criminal threats, SDPD said.RELATED: Timeline shows threats made against San Diego County schoolsIn a letter to parents Monday, Principal Brett Killeen said no "credible nor specific threat was made."The students were concerned about what another student has been posting on social media.  Though no credible nor specific threat was made toward any specific student nor our school, these students did the right thing in reporting their concerns to us.  The San Diego Police Department is investigating this issue, and the student who posted the content is not on campus. We are proud that CCA is a safe school with an inclusive and caring culture.  We do encourage families to talk to teens about what they may be posting online, because threatening content will be taken seriously, even if posted in jest, and it ultimately disrupts the lives of those who are concerned about the content, as well as the person who used poor judgment in posting the content.  1383

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Clairemont man is recovering after he said he was accidentally shot by his next-door neighbor.Walter Lam said he was at his dining room table inside his home on Sunday when he heard a gunshot.“As soon as I heard that shot, I felt something was really cold on the inside of my arm. And I was bleeding; I knew immediately I was shot and I called 911,” Lam said.Once at the hospital, Lam underwent surgery to remove the bullet.“If it had moved towards my heart, I would have been dead,” Lam told ABC 10News.San Diego police said the bullet was fired by his neighbor who lives right next door. The neighbor said he was cleaning his gun and did not even know it was loaded.Investigators took the neighbor’s gun into evidence, and while he was not arrested, investigators said the neighbor could face a misdemeanor gun-related charge.Lam is recovering and in a little bit of paint, but he said he’s ready to return to work as head of his nonprofit organization Alliance for African Assistance.Lam said this is a reminder that life is too short.“Life can end any time. Just a little more to the right and I would be dead. Right now, people would be planning my funeral,” Lam said.ABC 10News learned the case has been forwarded to the San Diego City Attorney's Office. They will ultimately decide if Lam’s neighbor will be charged with a crime. 1365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- 33 San Diego County elementary schools were honored under the Distinguished Schools Program by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson Monday. The program, which returned this year after a three-year break, replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program.Schools were eligible based on test scores, suspension rates and English learner progress.Among those listed: Veterans Elementary (Chula Vista Elementary District), Green Elementary (San Diego Unified School District), Garfield Elementary (San Diego Unified School District), Monterey Ridge Elementary (Poway Unified), Ocean View Hills (San Ysidro Elementary), and Solana Pacific Elementary.“These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” Torlakson said.“Every day at these schools, teachers, administrators and classified employees, working with parents, apply their dedication, creativity, and talents toward providing a great education for all their students.”According to the California Department of Education website, California is using a multiple measures accountability system to identify eligible schools based on their performance and progress on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard. Eligible schools (Kindergarten thru eighth grade) were selected based on their performance and progress on the state indicators, which include test scores, suspension rates, and English learner progress. The Chula Vista Elementary School District was awarded CDE's 2018 California Exemplary Program Award. These award winners represent examples of not just excellent teaching, learning, and collaborating, but also highly successful school climate efforts, ranging from real time conflict resolution to positive behavior intervention. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A dream became reality for a San Diego woman, but not in a good way. Jenna Evans says she swallowed her engagement ring in her sleep.Tuesday night, Evans dreamed that she and her fiance, Bobby, were facing off with "bad guys" on a high-speed train. During the struggle, Bobby told Evans that she had to swallow her engagement ring to protect it. So she did. Not just in her dream, but in real life. She woke to find the ring clean off her finger. "When I woke up and it was not on my hand, I knew exactly where it was," Evans said. "It was in my stomach."The next morning, Evans and her future husband went to Urgent Care, where they saw her X-rays. Her ring was clearly nestled right in her stomach.A gastroenterologist, however, suggested it would not be best to let nature run its course. Doctors recommended an upper endoscopy to remove her beloved bling."I was really happy because I don't know if I can look at it and appreciate it in the same way, if I had to search for it," Evans chuckled. At this point, Evans says she could feel the ring in her stomach and it was starting to become painful.Doctors safely removed the ring from her intestines and returned the jewelry to Evans — well, to Bobby for safe keeping, at least. Bobby eventually gave Evans her ring back."I feel very grateful that I got it back, and that this is a happy and funny story," Evans said. It was a crazy adventure that gave new meaning to "A Sparkling bride, inside and out."She says she now takes the ring off when going to sleep. The couple will get married in Evans' home state of Texas, hopefully with the ring in hand, next May. 1641
