SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to drive environmentally-friendly urban commuting, bike and scooter sharing companies have rolled into San Diego County — creating some headaches along the way.With the travel alternative, though, has come a glimpse into a greener future for congested roadways.Though in San Diego since February, ofo officially joined the city's expanding field of dockless bike and scooter options Monday. The company joins competing options Bird, LimeBike, MoBike, and DecoBike. "As transportation advocates, we welcome ofo to San Diego as an innovative solution to meeting San Diego’s environmental goals and providing transportation options."Riders simply download the ofo mobile app, scan the QR code on the bike to unlock it, and they're on their way. Rides run an hour, according to ofo. When finished, riders safely — and legally — park the bike and manually lock it to end the trip.Safely and legally means placing the bike out of the way of traffic and people walking or biking themselves.RELATED: Unique bike app Limebike rolls out in Imperial BeachThe Boardwalk stretching from Mission Bay to Pacific Beach is a prime example of both the pitfalls and ease of use, as users glide along but also run into congestion among walkers, runners, and skateboarders.Witnesses have told 10News they've seen scooter riders not wearing a helmet and people riding where they're not supposed to, in addition to bikes left only to block others.San Diego Police said the dockless bike and scooter movement is so new they haven't had the ability yet to issue citations and track riders.How do you feel about San Diego's bike- and scooter-sharing boon? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not unusual to collect Christmas decorations year-round, but using them to cover every inch of a late model Dodge Caravan is pretty unique.He's known to many as the "Christmas Man of San Diego," whose van conversion continues to turn heads and spark smiles — no matter the season or social distance."He's a trans-dimensional emperor of over a google-plex of universes," said Larry Bogaert, as he stands with his pet parrot, Emerald Eagle, on his forearm. "I'm his Prime Minister and his daddy."In his mid-60s, Bogaert is a man with a big imagination who loves to share tales, turning his late-model Dodge Caravan into a storytelling canvas."I have Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker Bell and the Boys going to Never Never Land," Bogaert shares.Almost every square inch of his vehicle features his own hand-drawn depictions of famed children's stories, mostly from English literature."And then I have Fezziwig's warehouse here," Bogaert says, pointing to various images on the car. "If you remember Scrooge did his apprenticeship at Fezziwig's.""For some things, I have a plan in mind, but other things as I buy things or acquire things you think, Oh, I can use that on the castle," Bogaert says, pointing to the roof of the vehicle which is covered by a towering display of church-like spires and angels. The hood is plastered with its own 3-D display of a miniature snow-covered town. And the sides of the van are covered in paint pen drawings all by his hand.The vehicle is a head turner and as we talk to Bogaert a couple of bicyclists stop to take pictures. Bogaert waves: "Thanks!" he says, before turning back to our camera, "99.9% of the time people give me the thumbs up. I've even had cops drive by and give me the thumbs up."Though, Bogaert admits there have been a few tickets over the years concerning visibility issues. But the former bus driver insists he's very good at using his side mirrors. Besides that, his inspiring creation has proven a good defense."One time the judge threw it out of court because she said her kids loved my car. She said case dismissed," he recalls.Another woman stops by on foot, "I like it. I think it's a positive message and we certainly need that now more than ever."Uncertain times for many, and Bogaert can relate to the feeling."With the coronavirus going on you should see how many people cheer my car because it's just something uplifting during these times," says Bogaert. "I like to be optimistic with the car. I like to be optimistic for myself if I can be. But I do get depressed."Underneath a kaleidoscope of ornaments inside the van, there is a snug space, where Bogaert sleeps, as — for the moment — this is his home."I bought a grocery store up in Crescent City. I always wanted to live in the redwoods," Bogaert said.He says that business venture years ago didn't go as planned, and the financial ramifications remain. But he doesn't dwell, as he focuses attention on another part of the van.After all, he and Emerald Eagle have a "google-plex of universes" to run. And they are, apparently, ever-expanding."I am adding more towers and a few more parts to it. I have some stuff inside that will go on in the next week or few days," said Bogaert. 3229
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Low inventory and historically low interest rates are driving California's red-hot real estate market.According to the California Association of Realtors, home sales climbed to their highest level in more than a decade, and the median home price set another high for the fourth straight month.It's making it harder for buyers to buy low but easier for sellers looking to sell high."With everything shutting down, I just figured now was the time to do it," said Kristi Gonzalez.After a career in the San Diego area, Gonzalez is retiring, moving out of state, and about to cash out."I think now is a great time to sell," she said. "There's very low inventory. It will make it easier for me."If you've paid attention to California's real estate landscape, the market is hot in many cities."We're seeing about a 10 percent increase in the last four to five months, and that's insane considering where we were," said Jordan Beal, president of the Beal Group.Beal said the San Diego area sees an influx of buyers from New York, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles."When you look at the fact that money is as cheap as it is, people who have been able to keep their jobs combined with a lot of tech people who can now work remotely and see San Diego as really cheap market compared to the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York, I don't see our market slowing down anytime soon," Beal said.The same thing is happening as you head north into the Central Valley."Inventory is historically low, interest rates are historically low, and it's just kind of the perfect storm with that whole supply and demand," said Ronda Newport, president of the Bakersfield Association of Realtors.Newport said the Bakersfield market is on fire.It's a combination of locals looking to take advantage of interest rates and those from wealthier ZIP codes trying to get out of a big city."If you have an LA buyer or a Bay Area buyer, and if they sell their home, you know a small little home for what they sell for in that area, and they move to Bakersfield, and they see what they can get for the money here, it's an easy decision," she said."We are just breaking all sorts of records," said Bruce Blair of Blair Properties.Blair's been selling homes along the Central Coast since the 70s.He said some people are buying houses they've never seen. Some buyers are paying in cash, and those who aren't have large down payments."It's tough to make any type of prediction right now, but right now, the housing market is not affordable for a lot of people in San Luis Obispo County, and that's a problem."According to the California Association of Realtors, September's statewide median home price was 2,430. That's up more than 17 percent from September of last year.According to a survey from Zillow, life uncertainty, likely caused by COVID-19, keeps more than a third of would-be sellers out of the market.The Zillow survey found many sellers say they anticipate a higher sale price if they wait.So, what to do? Unfortunately, there's no crystal ball."I don't anticipate it slowing down too much," said Carla Farley, President of the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors. "Unless we get some interest rates that go crazy after the election cycle, maybe that might slow some things, but I don't anticipate that happening either."According to the California Association of Realtors, the median number of days it took to sell a California single-family home was 11 days in September, down from 24 in September 2019.
