SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A second Scripps Medical Response Team has deployed to Northern California, tasked with helping fire victims.The first team returned Friday after a nine-day mission.“Being there in these shelters with people that have lost totally everything, but they're thankful for their lives, it just sets a whole new meaning for us for Thanksgiving," said Steve Miller, a Registered Nurse and part of the response team.Miller says because fire victims were forced to evacuate so quickly many did not have their medications or ID's to pick up prescriptions. He says the smoke also made respiratory problems worse. The days are long for the medical team, 12 hours at the shelter providing medical care along with prep and a daily debrief. “You’re in austere conditions; you’re living in tents, it’s cold, it’s wet, you do not have electricity, so you have to be able to work in that environment. You don't have all the medical tools you have in the hospital.”The second four-person team will continue to help fire evacuees over the next week. 1056

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A UC San Diego graduate is using a technology he created as a student to help avoid crowds during the pandemic. Nic Halverson launched Waitz in 2017, an application that measures and publishes how busy a space is at any given time.Using "Occuspace" sensors plugged into wall outlets, the app uses Bluetooth and WiFi signals to calculate how many people are in the room at a time. Halverson said it does not take any personal data and solely looks at how many devices are present.He said he first thought of the idea as a student who came from a small town of 3,000 people, then was overwhelmed by the crowds of San Diego.“I just turned to my friend and I was like, ‘man I wish we knew how busy every floor was before we came here,’ and that’s when kinda the light bulb went off,” he said.At UCSD currently, the application is used in two libraries, two gyms, and the main food court area. As of the end of August, about a dozen schools across the country will be signed up for the technology, with an anticipated number of close to 60 schools by the spring semester.While it’s useful for students trying to find a study spot, 2020 has changed the need.“We and other people realize that people care about how crowded places are now more than ever and it kinda transformed from being that was just convenient to have, it was nice to know how busy a place was before you went, to something that was more a matter of health and safety,” he said.While UCSD has not announced any plans to incorporate the app in any official coronavirus plan once students return to campus, the technology will still remain live.Halverson said they are currently talking to ski resorts to use the app to publish wait times for ski lines or restaurants, and he hopes it will continue to grow from there.“My dream is one day, you’ll be able to look and see how busy every Starbucks or Chipotle is right there on your phone,” he said. 1935

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego mother of four said she was fired from her job of nine years because she needed to keep working from home during the pandemic.According to a lawsuit filed by Taneasha Newsome, “Knowing Ms. Newsome required a work accommodation or a medical leave to care for a disabled child during the global pandemic that gripped the country in early 2020, Axos failed to attempt accommodating Ms. Newsome’s obvious need. Instead, Axos terminated her in order to rid itself of an employee who required accommodation.”The federal complaint filed last week against San Diego-based Axos Bank alleges associational disability discrimination and wrongful termination, failure to provide reasonable accommodations, and racial discrimination, among other things.Newsome said it was challenging before the pandemic to balance work and home obligations. She explained one of her children has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and another is autistic.Newsome said when the stay at home order went into effect, schools closed, and she started working from home.“I was told basically, I’m supposed to use my breaks legally and my lunch to do what I need to do for the kids, which anyone who has kids knows that’s impossible,” she said. “You can’t put them on a schedule when they’re hungry or need to use the bathroom.”According to her lawsuit, in late March 2020, Axos began using a computer program to monitor its remote workforce.The lawsuit claims Axos knew the program “was unable to track certain aspects of employees’ workdays, which caused the system to erroneously underreport working hours for Ms. Newsome and others.” It stated Axos used the inaccurate reports, “to place Ms. Newsome and other employees on a performance improvement plan (PIP) on April 24, 2020 for lack of productivity, even though the reports did not accurately measure their full productivity.”“During that time, they say, ‘Hey the software isn’t properly tracking us, it’s not tracking our work,’” said Newsome’s attorney Alreen Haeggquist. “They ask questions to their managers of how does it track productive time and unproductive time. No answers are given.”According to the lawsuit, Axos demanded all teleworking employees return to full-time, in-office work on May 1, 2020. The lawsuit said employees that required a further teleworking arrangement were instructed to submit a formal request form that detailed their need for continued teleworking.“When Taneasha says, ‘Hey I need an accommodation. I need to keep working from home because of my children with special needs and what’s going on with them at home.’ They fire her based on those reports from over a month earlier,” Haeggquist said.According to the lawsuit, “Axos fired Ms. Newsome during a two-minute Zoom meeting with HR, claiming it was based on her lack of ‘productivity.’ Axos Bank fired Ms. Newsome, but not because of her performance. After interfering with Ms. Newsome’s right to take leave to care for her disabled family members, and otherwise failing to accommodate that need, Axos Bank fired Ms. Newsome because, as the mother of two disabled children, she needed to remain working from home, and the company thought she was too likely to be ‘distracted’ by the childcare obligations of her disabled children.”In a statement, a spokesperson for Axos Bank responded to the allegations writing, “Like most public companies, it is our policy not to comment on the specifics of pending litigation. With respect to this complaint, we can say the allegations are false and omit material facts, and we are confident we will prevail once these material facts are presented to the appropriate forum.”Newsome said things have been difficult since she lost her job.“We had to give up our apartment,” she said. “We now live with family, which I’ve never had to do. When I left home at 18, I stayed gone. So, this is my first time coming back home. It’s an adjustment for the kids, they’ve never not had their own.”Newsome’s lawsuit also alleges racial discrimination. It claims, “Axos discriminated against Ms. Newsome in compensation and in terms, conditions, and privileges of employment because of Ms. Newsome’s race. Based on information and belief, Axos paid Ms. Newsome less than her white counterparts, and the differential was not based on a bona fide factor, but rather, it was based on race.”As of this writing, the company has not yet responded to the allegations in court filings. 4461

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An 18-year-old San Diego student who has already cemented her place in climbing has now grabbed a historic Olympic accolade.Sunday, Brooke Raboutou, of Boulder, Colo., qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Games to become the first-ever American to qualify for Olympic climbing, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee. The University of San Diego sophomore finished ninth in the combined qualification round at the IFSC Climbing World Championships in Hachioji, Japan, according to Team USA. She had the sixth-fastest time in the speed round and ranked seventh- and tenth in lead and bouldering, respectively.RELATED: Vista skatepark draws 2020 Olympic hopefulsThe Tokyo 2020 games will mark the first time climbing is included as an Olympic sport, following a 2016 vote to add the sport to the Olympic program.She was named to the first U.S. national climbing team earlier this year.In Tokyo, Raboutou will compete in the combined event, which includes competitions for speed, bouldering, and lead. Her final rank will be based on the results from all three events.U.S. athletes will have two more chances to qualify for the 2020 team. Next in the fall at the Olympic Qualifying Event and in 2020 during continental championships. The Tokyo games will take a maximum of two qualifying athletes from each country, featuring 20 athletes per gender.Raboutou has been competing from a young age, beginning her climbing career when she was 7 years old, according to Team USA. At 11, she became the youngest person in the world to complete a 5.14b-grade climb. She is also 2018's lead youth world champion, 2016 combined youth world champion, and 2017's combined youth Pan American champion. Raboutou skills come across as a genetic trait, as her parents were each multiple-time climbing world cup champions and her older brother is also an accomplished climber. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego veteran and father is defending his son's right to sit during the national anthem.Ray Everett is responding to a letter sent to Lincoln High School's principal, complaining that students on the basketball team were sitting and talking during the national anthem.The man who wrote the letter is a U.S. Air Force veteran and grandfather to a player on the opposing team. Another parent who was offended used her phone to film the students sitting."At the end of the day our students do not have to stand," said Everett. "But you will not make them feel like they did something wrong. They did not harm anyone and they did not break the law."Everett was in the U.S. Army for 15 years. He says he served his country in order to protect the rights of Americans, including the right to sit during the national anthem.Everett's brother-in-law, Antoine Jarvis, says while he was offended by the letter he respects everyone's right to their own opinion. "I think that the biggest challenge in voicing your opinion is when you're close-minded to other's opinions," said Jarvis. "When you're close-minded to their beliefs."Jarvis says he no longer stands during the national anthem after learning more about its history. He only asks that others respect his right to do so.The principal of Lincoln High School, a veteran himself, has been responsive to complaints and plans to sit down with the veteran who wrote the letter about the student's actions.On Thursday the San Diego Unified School District sent a statement to 10News:Public school districts do not have the authority to require students to observe patriotic or religious rituals in the classroom or at school functions. We believe in our students right to free-speech, but also encourage students to be respectful in the way they choose to exercise their rights.School Administration is reaching out to the students involved and taking the opportunity to use this as a teachable moment. 1986
