HONG KONG, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong people, including hundreds of volunteers, streamed into a downtown funeral house on Thursday to pay their last respects to the city's fallen hero, Wong Fuk-wing, a former volunteer who lost his life saving others in the April 14 earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai province."I will remember him for all the rest of my life," said nine- year-old Bai Ji, who was among one of those saved by Wong.A three-hour public memorial service began at 4 p.m. local time at a memorial hall of the Universal Funeral Parlor in Kowloon. Among thousands of mourners, four children from the orphanage where Wong worked as a volunteer, came here to pay farewell to Wong, also known as Ah Fuk. Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Chief Executive Donald Tsang (front) bows at the funeral of Wong Fuk-wing in Hong Kong, south China, May 6, 2010. Hong Kong people, including hundreds of volunteers, streamed into a downtown funeral home on Thursday to pay their last respect to the city's fallen hero, Wong Fuk-wing, a former volunteer who lost his life saving others in the earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai ProvinceWong, a 46-year-old truck driver who had survived the 7.1- magnitude quake in Yushu last month, died in a powerful aftershock as he returned to rescue the trapped people at the orphanage. BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of the non-manufacturing sector rose to 58.4 percent in March, a rebound of12 percentage points from February, when the index fell below the boom-bust line of 50 percent for the first time since a year earlier, an industrial association said Saturday. The PMI, designed to provide a real-time snapshot of business conditions, includes a package of indices including new orders, inventory levels, production and others that measure economic performance. A reading of above 50 percent suggests expansion, while one below 50 percent indicates contraction. The rise of the index indicated robust market activities in service sectors, which combined with an optimistic outlook that would encourage private investment and promote healthy and coordinated development of national economy, said the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) vice president Cai Jin.According to the CFLP survey, the new order sub-index for China's non-manufacturing sector climbed to 54.6 percent last month, up 8.4 percentage points than February. The outlook sub-index was 70.4 percent, up 2.4 percentage points. The CFLP survey covers 20 non-manufacturing industries, including logistics, wholesale, hospitality, supermarkets and construction. The PMI for manufacturing sectors rose to 55.1 percent in March, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce Tuesday made a cautious prediction for the outlook of the nation's foreign trade for the rest of the year amid the fragile global economic recovery. The rebound of China's overseas shipments in the first quarter can largely be attributed to the low comparison base of the same period last year, the commerce ministry report said. Moreover, uncertainty in the global market remains as high unemployment in European Union nations and low capacity-utilization in the United States may dampen consumption and investment, the report said.China is facing deteriorating trade conditions as trade protectionism is on the rise, the report added.China suffered 19 trade-remedy investigations in the first quarter, up 93.5 percent over the same time last year. The investigations, targeting Chinese products, involved trade worth 1.19 billion U.S. dollars, the report said. The report also said higher costs may squeeze domestic enterprises' profits as a result of raw material price hikes and rising labor costs.China's exports increased 28.7 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2010 after dipping 16 percent last year amid the global economic downturn, customs data showed.

GYEONGJU, South Korea, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday called on related parties to keep calm, exercise restraint and appropriately handle Cheonan incident.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made the remarks while meeting with his South Korean counterpart Yu Myung-hwan ahead of a trilateral foreign ministers' meeting of China, Japan and South Korea, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said.Yang said the sinking of the South Korean navy ship "Cheonan" is an unfortunate incident. Considering the current complicated and sensitive situation on the Korean Peninsula, China hopes all parties concerned should start from the stability and peace of the Korean Peninsula and the region, proceed from long-term interest, keep calm and exercise restraint to appropriately handle the Cheonan incident. As for what the Japanese side said during the two-way meeting between Yang and his Japanese counterpart Katsuya Okada that Chinese marine surveillance ships' enforcement activities on Japan 's scientific research ships east of "medium line" has damaged Japan's sovereignty and interests, Yang stressed that China remains clear and consistent position on the East China Sea issues. He said China has never recognized the so-called "medium line" proposed unilaterally by Japan, noting that the Japanese side has no right to adopt unilateral actions in the disputed sea, according to the spokesman. The spokesman said the two sides agreed to calmly deal with related issues to avoid worsening the situation and affecting the bilateral ties.Regarding to what the Japanese side mentioned during the meeting that its surveillance actions on the Chinese Navy's recent training in East China sea are in line with the International Law, describing the Chinese side's actions as "dangerous", Yang reaffirmed that the Chinese Navy are conducting normal training, which poses no threat to any country.Yang hoped that the two countries' defense authorities could enhance mutual trust by further strengthening exchanges and communications, so as to prevent misunderstanding and misjudgment, according to the spokesman.
