WASHINGTON, D.C. – Monday is the final day to register to vote in several states. In order to vote in the general election, residents of the following states must be registered by October 5:ArizonaArkansasFloridaGeorgiaHawaiiIndianaKentuckyMississippiOhioSouth CarolinaTennesseeTexasIf you live in one of the states above and you believe you’re already registered, it doesn’t hurt check the status of your registration, just in case anything has changed.Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most states have expanded their vote-by-mail opportunities, so Americans can vote safely this fall. The U.S. Postal Service, which will play a huge roll in this election, strongly recommends that voters request their mail-in ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to Election Day.The USPS also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states' due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. If you don’t want to rely on the USPS to deliver your ballot to election officials, many communities provide locations where you can drop your ballot off yourself. You can also still vote in person on Election Day. Most states are taking extra steps to ensure voters don't contract or spread the novel coronavirus at the polls. 1296

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to 751,000, the lowest since March but a figure that remains historically high and indicates the viral pandemic is still forcing many employers to cut jobs.Unemployment Insurance Weekly ClaimsInitial claims were 751,000 for the week ending 10/24 (-40,000).Insured unemployment was 7,756,000 for the week ending 10/17 (-709,000).https://t.co/ys7Eg5LKAW— US Labor Department (@USDOL) October 29, 2020 Rising confirmed virus cases in nearly every state, along with a cutoff in federal aid, are threatening to weaken the economy in the coming months. As temperatures fall, restaurants and bars will likely serve fewer customers outdoors. And many consumers may increasingly stay home to avoid infection. Those trends could force employers to slash more jobs during the winter.Though many are still unemployed, the U.S. economy has shown signs of recovery, growing at a 33.1% annual rate in the July-September quarter, the Bureau of Economic Analysis announced Thursday. That’s the largest quarterly gain on record, The Associated Press reports. The growth comes after the historic economic plunge brought on by the pandemic in the spring, when businesses had to close and lay off workers. The Washington Post reports that the U.S. economy has recovered about two thirds of the ground it lost during the first half of the year. Though, The Post says these numbers don’t mean the economy has entirely healed or that the pace of the recovery will continue into the final quarter, especially because of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases across the nation. 1639

We have to find a way to come together, bridge divisions, and focus on solutions that help the millions who are struggling. I am raising my hand and committing to working with President-elect Biden and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Congress to do exactly that. pic.twitter.com/EXWLWKmBdp— Fred Upton #WearYourMask (@RepFredUpton) November 7, 2020 368

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Milwaukee, Charlotte, Jacksonville: all cities that, at one time or another, prepared to host one of this year’s two major political conventions, along with tens of thousands of people. The coronavirus, though, put all of that on ice.“We were going to show the world all the great things Milwaukee has to offer, so it’s disappointing this had to happen to us this year,” said Wisconsin resident Katie Dahm.Professor Barry Burden heads up the Election Research Center and is a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.“The role of the convention will definitely be different this year,” he said. “Research shows that conventions have had smaller and smaller impacts over the years.”Both the Democratic and Republican conventions are now, for all intents and purposes, virtual. So, what might that look like?“They will be highly-produced, slick productions that have been prepared in advance,” Prof. Burden said. “So, they have removed some of the uncertainties and spontaneity that happens at a convention. That may remove some of the excitement.”George Washington University media and public affairs professor Peter Loge agrees with that – up to a point.“There won't be the spontaneity,” Loge said, but also added, “I think the nets will still have to cover it because it's such a different convention, right? What's actually going to happen? What are we going to do? It's new. It's new and a different thing.”Loge also said the novelty of a virtual convention – unheard of until now – may drive people to check it out, either on TV or online.“We all want to feel a part of a special moment for what we think is an important moment in American history,” he said. “And I think people will tune in for that.”Offering an opportunity to potentially capture the attention of those who may not usually watch a big party thrown by political parties. 1898

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon plans to free up a big chunk of its military airwaves in the U.S. for high-speed internet service, part of a broader push to get ahead of China in the deployment of 5G wireless technology. The Trump administration announced Monday that it has identified radio spectrum used for radar defense systems that can be shared with commercial telecommunications providers without compromising national security. White House officials said that the Federal Communications Commission will be able to auction the 100 megahertz of “mid-band” spectrum beginning in December 2021 for use as soon as mid-2022. 633
