SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Monday identified the suspect who reportedly threatened officers with a knife before being shot in the Midway District last week. According to police, Ryan Bowers, 23, was shot by Officer Matthew Steinbach after raising a knife toward officers. Police responded to the 3100 block of Cauby Street just before 10 p.m. January 3 after a caller said Bowers cut his own throat with a knife before it was taken away. According to police, that’s when Bowers pulled a knife out of his jacket and raised it toward officers. The officers drew their weapons while telling Bowers to back up, which he refused to do. “Fearing for his safety, one officer fired his weapon at the male striking him at least once,” police said. Officers administered medical aid to Bowers until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a downtown San Diego checkpoint Friday night. The checkpoint was set up on the 1400 block of G Street between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.Throughout the course of the night, police checked more than 1,100 vehicles. Nine people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents rallied at Poway Unified District Headquarters during their monthly board meeting, asking them to pause on proposed plans to bring a Costco to land zoned to build a school. The vacant lot is at the corner of Camino Del Sur and Carmel Valley Road and was labeled a surplus by the Poway Unified School District. That means they don't need it and believe they have enough schools in the area.Parent Gianni Nguyen said that's not true, "in our particular area the schools are impacted, so no."Nguyen said she doesn't mind the idea of creating mixed use retail, restaurants and a Costco, but she was angered by the process the board went through to get the deal."I felt like we were just robbed... We just want to be part of that process, bring us to the table, give us a voice, let us share with you what our opinions are," she said. The board voted unanimously at their September meeting to pursue a long term lease with Costco, that spans decades. Nguyen said the community was blindsided."I have four kids in the public school district, four young kids, my oldest is only 12, so I am very passionate about this," she said looking away. She hopes the rally makes the board pause and reconsider moving forward on this deal.Nguyen added, "we're going to unite and say we do have a voice and there should be a choice and you guys should be in there to represent us and if you're not representing us, who are you representing?"The deal was not on the agenda Thursday. 1493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Overall crime rates in San Diego are at historically low levels. But it's a mixed bag when you break down new statistics today from SANDAG.The good news is that property crime is down so far in 2017.Car thefts are down by 13-percent while burglary and larceny are each down by 9-percents for violent crime, it really depends on where you live.SANDAG breaks down the numbers into 17 jurisdictions. Violent crime is up this year in 12 of them. Those communities with a rise in crime were Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Encinitas, Lemon Grove, San Marcos, Santee, Vista, Fallbrook, Lakeside, Spring Valley, and Valley Center.Homicides are down 14-percent and rape is down by three. But robberies are up 3-percent and aggravated assault has increased 1-percent. 791
