VISTA (CNS) - An Oceanside man convicted of abusing his neighbors' dogs, including gouging out the eye of a Siberian Husky, was sentenced to nearly 10 years in custody Friday.Jurors last summer found 37-year-old David C. Herbert guilty of six counts of animal cruelty, one count of burglary and four misdemeanor counts of vandalism for harming two separate families' dogs, one of which remains missing.Herbert was handed an 8-year, 8-month prison term in a Vista courtroom Friday morning, to be served along with a one-year jail term on the misdemeanor counts.RELATED COVERAGE: Navy veteran accused of torturing dogs ordered to stand trialMan arrested for assaulting huskies, stealing Oceanside dogsSearch warrant served in Oceanside dog torture caseStalker targets and tortures Oceanside dogs, neighbors sayAuthorities said Herbert targeted a family living next door to him in north Oceanside, burning their two huskies, Cocayo and Estrella, with caustic chemicals and repeatedly slashing the tires on the family's vehicles in 2017.The family moved out of their rental home after discovering that someone had broken in and gouged Estrella's eye out.About one month later, a new family with two dogs moved in, and within two days their 9-year-old Golden Retriever Lala disappeared. The dog has never been found and is presumed dead.Police found a small amount of blood in Herbert's car and on a baseball bat he owned.Herbert, who represented himself at trial, testified that Lala jumped in his car and he was about to take her to a shelter when she jumped out and ran off. 1580

VISTA, CA (KGTV) — The man accused of intentionally driving a U-Haul van into a crowd of people outside of an Encinitas bar, pleaded not guilty to serious charges in a Vista courtroom Wednesday.Christian Davis, 28, stood next to an attorney with his head down as he was formally charged with two counts of attempted premeditated murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of felony driving under the influence of alcohol.Deputy District Attorney, Kim Coulter, said the incident early Sunday morning started at the Saloon and Shelter bar when Davis was kicked out.RELATED: Video shows driver slamming into crowd outside Encinitas bar"He was asked to leave because he was highly intoxicated and it was time for him to go," said Coulter.Once he was kicked out, Coulter said he got into a verbal argument with two bouncers, then threatened them."It escalated and culminated with Davis telling the security guards 'you're going to regret doing this, I’m going to come back and I’m going to kill you,'" she said.Moments later, witnesses saw the U-Haul heading for a crowd of people standing outside of the bars.RELATED: Man arrested after driving into crowd outside Encinitas barThe incident was captured on a passerby's dash cam video."He reversed out of a 7-Eleven and he came barreling down a sidewalk in front of Shelter bar, right into a crowd of people," said Coulter. "It’s our position that he used the U-Haul passenger van as a deadly weapon."Good Samaritans rushed to hold Davis in place until deputies arrived and arrested him. Sadly, two men who were outside of the bar at the wrong time were seriously hurt."A 25-year-old victim has had a severe injury to his leg, he’s had his third surgery today," said Coulter. The other victim, a 24-year-old, was also left hospitalized with severe injuries."He has two collapsed lungs, fractured ribs, a broken arm and he did spend time in the ICU," she said.Bail was set at million. If Davis is released on bail, he will wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet. He is due in court for a preliminary hearing on March 17. 2095

VIENNA — Austrian authorities say at least one gunman, shooting apparently at random in a popular Vienna nightlife area hours before a coronavirus lockdown took effect, killed four people in an Islamic extremist attack. They said Tuesday that the suspect, who was shot and killed by police, was a young Austrian-North Macedonian dual citizen who had a previous terror conviction for attempting to join the Islamic State extremist group in Syria.Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said two men and two women died from their injuries in the attack Monday evening. He said a police officer who tried to get in the attacker’s way was shot and wounded, and another 14 people were hurt. Police have arrested several other people and searched 15 houses and apartments 759

VOLO, Ill. (AP) — A northern Illinois auto museum says it has no plans to stop displaying a Dodge Charger from the “Dukes of Hazzard” television show with the Confederate flag painted atop the vehicle. The flag is increasingly viewed as a symbol of racism. NASCAR has banned it and it's being removed from the Mississippi state flag. However, the Volo Auto Museum says the famed “General Lee” from the first season of the TV show isn’t going anywhere.Museum director Brian Grams tells the Northwest Herald that he would not remove it any more than he would remove Nazi memorabilia from the museum’s military exhibit.Grams calls the vehicle "a piece of history." 667
