SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of University City residents is suing the city of San Diego over its plan to pump sewage under their neighborhood to be turned into tap water. The nonprofit University City Community Foundation filed the lawsuit after raising ,000 from residents to challenge the environmental impact report for the city's Pure Water pipeline. The suit doesn't challenge the city's goal of making heavily treated reclaimed water one-third of its supply by 2035. The city says that will protect against future shortages and price increases. The lawsuit, however, says the city did not explore alternatives and did not adequately notify the public of the project's pipeline. It will pump sewage from the Morena Area, through Clairemont and University City, to a treatment plant at UTC. "There's no 100 percent guarantee that there could not be a leak, there could not be some discharge," said U.C. resident Barry Bernstein, who supports the lawsuit. "There could be some discharge. There may be some problems with the purification system."Ruth DeSantis, who heads the foundation, said the city and foundation are now in settlement talks. A city spokesman declined to comment on the lawsuit, but said there are multiple protections in place - including a system designed to immediately cut off to avoid sewage geysers. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Public Library is on the road to reopening. Tuesday, eleven locations have reopened, but only for people who placed holds prior to the closure that started in March. Those items can now be picked up with a contact-free system where the person calls when they arrive at the location, then a librarian puts the books on a table outside for the person to pick up. Starting next week, people can put new holds on items. Director Misty Jones said they’ll reopen more after that depending on county orders and plans to keep books virus-free. The future of the libraries will depend on some unknown’s, including how the library can help the school system, what studies reveal about how long the virus can live on items and more. “We adapt to the way that people need the service from us and we’ll adapt and we’ll pivot and we’ll be able to offer that incredible customer service like we always have,” said Jones. The eleven locations currently open as of May 26 are Carmel Valley, College-Rolando, La Jolla/Riford, Logan Heights, Mira Mesa, Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox, Mission Valley, Point Loma/Hervey, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro and Valencia Park/Malcolm X. These locations are open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The libraries have adapted with coronavirus, creating online programs like virtual story time, ebooks and audiobooks and online book clubs. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric says it may cut power to some 1 million people this weekend in central and Northern California, which could see the most dangerous fire weather of the season. PG&E says it could begin safety shutoffs Sunday morning as gusts and low humidity ramp up the risk of downing power lines and sparking massive fires in tinder-dry brush. The shutoffs in 38 counties could last into Tuesday. PG&E equipment has been blamed for sparking some of the most devastating fires in recent years, including a 2018 blaze in Butte County that killed 85 people. This year, wildfires already have destroyed some 9,200 buildings and killed 31 people.Northern California officials are urging residents to leave homes in the hills, secure backyard furniture and other loose items and have an evacuation plan ready ahead of powerful winds that could lead to widespread electricity outages. 927

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat damaged the USS Midway Sunday.The mast of the sailboat collided with a safety net attachment on the front port-side ‘horn’ of the ship. The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. according to Harbor Police.The mast of the sailboat snapped off. There was minor damage to the safety nets of the Midway.“I thought something fell off the flight line, I didn't think a boat would crash into the Midway,” said Craig Wiener, who was touring the Midway at the time of the crash. “We were looking out the little port windows, and you see the mast falling off into the water."Harbor patrol says no charges are expected and attributed the crash to inexperience on the part of the person steering the sailboat.  Eight people were onboard the sailboat, and none of them were hurt.“He didn't realize how close he was and how tall his mast was and it was too late and the wind pulled him in,” Wiener said. 945
