SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sweetwater Union High School District officials say their revised budget will not have a major impact on students, but some parents are getting notices from schools informing them of cuts to some afterschool programs, tutoring and summer school.The discovery of an accounting miscalculation over the summer led to a million budget shortfall that the district rushed to fix. On Oct. 8, the district’s board unanimously approved a revised and balanced 2018-19 budget. The San Diego County Office of Education has until Nov. 8 to approve it.Changes to the budget include furlough days for numerous district employees, elimination of paid training days for teachers and cuts to the adult education program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fight over the future of short-term vacation rentals in San Diego is now targeting paid signature gatherers hired by the largely Airbnb-funded campaign.The campaign, called "Stand for Jobs, Stop the Vacation Rental Ban," needs to raise about 35,000 signatures to overturn the City Council's recent vote to limit short-term vacation rentals essentially to primary residences. A group of residents called the San Diego Community Working Group on Short-Term Vacation Rentals is now drafting a letter to multiple city officials alleging that the signature gatherers are misleading voters with false information about the regulations. RELATED: Airbnb: San Diego teachers made .7M renting out their home last year"You won't be able to do bed and breakfast, and then there's a huge emphasis on the amount of money on the fee. There is no fee for home sharing," said Gary Wonacott, a member of the group, giving examples of what he's heard.There are now upwards of 200 signature gatherers around San Diego. On Friday, there were five of them spread across the Target shopping center on Sports Arena Boulevard.LaKeisha Weaver says she is being paid more than for every signature she gets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video caught on team of thieves targeting a home in Point Loma. The home sits on a street just off Catalina boulevard. Last Thursday, just before 8 p.m., an SUV is seen driving up and then driving away. 12 minutes later, it's back. This time, it parks. As the camera switches to night vision, three figures emerge. On the side of the home, they are seen hunting for a way in. The dual-pane sliding door in the kitchen is later found shattered. The next time they are seen, the three burglars wearing hoodies are scrambling out of the home, two of them carrying safes. Once they reach the SUV, they toss the safes into the back and take off. Inside the safes: a partial coin collection and dozens of pieces of jewelry, many of them family heirlooms. "I'm angry amd there is a feeling of being empty," said David, who asked 10news not to identify him. One of the stolen pieces is an opal-and-diamond necklace belonging to David's 90-year-old mother, who is living with dementia. She helped design the piece to celebrate her journey from file clerk to business owner at the same business. "Something missing you can't replace ... My mother became a success in a man's world. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The attorney for Rebecca Zahau’s family spoke Friday about the San Diego County Sheriff Department’s new review of her death at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado.Earlier in the day, Sheriff Bill Gore announced that investigators found no evidence that she “died at the hands of another”. The department will not reopen the case.Zahau’s body was found hanging a the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011. Her wrists and feet were bound. For years, there has been speculation about the nature of her death, which was originally determined to be a suicide.Zahau family attorney Keith Greer suggested Friday afternoon that the Sheriff’s investigators are corrupt. “It’s not a logical decision. There’s something here that’s motivating these folks to do the wrong thing,” he told 10News. “I don’t know how they look at themselves in the mirror,” he added. Greer said that a rational person would not look at the evidence and believe that Zahau’s death was a suicide. The Zahau family lives in Missouri and did not want to be involved in Friday’s briefing at the Sheriff’s Department. They did release a recent photo of Zahau’s gravesite, surrounded by snow and flowers.Greer said he and the family are disappointed in the Sheriff’s Department, especially after a jury recently ruled in the family’s favor during the civil case. The Zahaus plan to fight the Shacknai family in their request to have the civil verdict reversed and request a new trial. 1471
