It's been a roller coaster year for amusement parks across the country, with crowds or long lines this year because of COVID-19. Most theme parks that were able to reopen did so with guests' safety in mind."This fall is a unique time for us as families are dealing with coming out of the pandemic and what can they do, and certainly it's not over. Everybody is still very concerned about health and safety and looking to the attractions industry is a great place," said Susan Storey, the Global Communications Director for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA).Storey says most theme parks across the country are mandating masks and not allowing as many people into the parks."They’re very good at managing how many people can be in a line, to how many people would be in a restaurant," Storey said. "We’re experts at moving people around and being able to provide a safe, healthy, fun experience."Storey says most theme parks are outside on large properties, giving people the ability to spread out."Technology has come into play, too. You can buy your tickets online and show them with your phone. You can do mobile ordering with food, so you’re not standing in line. You can just order, go and pick it up," Storey said. "So, there’s a lot of things that the industry has immediately implemented and added to take their already safe and fun environment."Six Flags over Georgia has fully decorated for Halloween, hoping to encourage families to visit "HalloFest" this fall."Right now, we have reduced capacity, so we are operating at a far lower level at the park than you’d typically see, and that’s so we can ensure social distancing," said Divina Mims, the Communications Manager at Six Flags over Georgia and Whitewater.Six Flags is also conducting daily temperature checks on employees and guests and conducting contactless bag checks. Every other row on a ride is empty, allowing for social distancing even on roller coasters.Hershey Park in Pennsylvania is limiting capacity through an online reservation system."We've also added 300 hand sanitizers, and we have a variety of guest ambassadors in positions to help our guests with all those safety enhancements," said Quinn Bryner, Director of Public Relations for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discourages large gatherings where maintaining six feet of distance isn't possible, as that puts people at the highest risk for contracting COVID-19.According to the CDC's website, "The more people an individual interacts with at a gathering and the longer that interaction lasts, the higher the potential risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 and COVID-19 spreading."However, Storey says, parks are doing everything they can to keep customers safe."We provide a lot of jobs, and we do a lot for our communities," Storey said. "We provide respite, we provide fun and help create great memories for our guests and visitors, and that's what’s critical in all that we do."Anyone planning a trip an amusement park should check the park's website prior to visiting to ensure that social distancing is possible. 3154

INDIANAPOLIS -- A leader of the white nationalist movement was arrested and charged with domestic battery Tuesday following an incident at his southern Indiana home.Court records show Orange County prosecutors charged Matthew Heimbach, the leader of the white nationalist Traditionalist Workers Party, with a felony count of domestic battery committed in the presence of a child and a misdemeanor count of battery.According to ABC-affiliate WHAS 11 in Louisville, which obtained a copy of the court documents, police were called to Heimbach’s compound in Paoli, Indiana, on a report that Heimbach had assaulted his wife’s stepfather, Matt Parrott. Parrott is also a member of the white nationalist movement. When police arrived at Heimbach’s home, they reportedly learned Heimbach had also attacked his wife while their children watched.Heimbach was booked into the Orange County Jail. Court records show he posted a ,000 cash bond on Tuesday.Heimbach was previously ordered to attend anger management classes in July 2017 when he pleaded guilty to physically harassing a female protestor at a Donald Trump rally in Louisville, Kentucky. The judge in the case, Jefferson County District Judge Stephanie Pearce Burke, waived Heimbach’s 90-day sentence on the condition that he not re-offend within two years. The new charges against him could potentially put that suspended sentence in jeopardy.Just months later, Heimbach was one of the organizers of the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted in the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer when a car plow into counter-protestors.Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis first reported on Heimbach in 2016, when the outspoken white nationalist was hired as a case manager by the Department of Child Services. Then 24 years old, Heimbach had already appeared on Nightline for his views on white separatism.WRTV found Heimbach had been terminated less than three weeks after his hire date. The most recent incident involving Heimbach may have larger ripple effects within his white nationalist organization, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks organizations it classifies as “hate groups.”In a post to the SPLC’s website Tuesday, the organization said it spoke with Heimbach’s father-in-law, Parrott, who told them he was leaving the group. An initial hearing on the battery charges against Heimbach in Orange County had not yet been set. Kentucky court records show Heimbach is scheduled to appear for a review hearing on June 1 for his case from the Louisville incident.  2577

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WRTV) -- A woman who comforted a college student during her last moments after being struck by a school bus Monday hopes her family knows everyone did all they could for her.Fatima Hassuneh, 18, was crossing the street at the intersection of University Boulevard and New York Street on the Indiana University, Purdue University of Indianapolis campus around 1:30 p.m. Monday when a bus attempting to make a left-hand turn struck her.School officials said the bus was under contract with Indianapolis Public Schools, but owned by Durham Transportation. Witnesses and college officials say Hassuneh had the right of way.PREVIOUS | IUPUI?student struck, killed by school busHassuneh was a pre-med student who aspired to become a doctor, according to a post by the college's Muslim Student Association. “Fatima, an aspiring doctor, was a sophomore in biology and was known for her kind heart and sense of humor,” the Muslim Student Association wrote. “She was a gift among us and has returned to her Lord. She was very active in our community and would often lead interfaith events. May Allah allow her to continue to reap the benefits of those deeds.”At the time of the crash, Alysa Schultz and her boyfriend were sitting at a red light at the very same intersection. She told WRTV that as soon as she saw what happened, her boyfriend started calling 911 while she rushed to check on Hassuneh.“As I was kind of kneeling there next to her, all she was doing was just holding her hand out, so I just grabbed it and held onto it,” Schultz said. “People were getting mad, saying, ‘Don’t touch her. Don’t move her.’ But at the same time, that one little bit of humanity – just hold on to her hand – that’s probably all she wanted.”Schultz said she didn’t know Hassuneh – but that her friends and classmates have messaged her since telling her what a wonderful person she was.“I had a lot of people message me on Facebook saying how awesome of a person she was and how beautiful and smart and driven and how involved she was,” Schultz said. “I really wish I would have known her.”Schultz, a former Indiana University student herself, said she hopes Hassuneh’s family can take some comfort from all of the efforts made to save her.“I hope that her family knows that there were six people calling the police, four people running around the corner to grab any police who were nearby,” Shultz said. “Everybody was stopping and blocking off the road so that no one could come near the situation. Everyone at IUPUI was like a family doing everything they possibly could for her, and I really hope that’s comforting to the family.”An Islamic funeral prayer, a janaza, was planned for Tuesday night for Hassuneh at the Alhuda Foundation in Fishers. As of Tuesday afternoon, police were still investigating the crash. 2847
