SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego donut shop owner is defending a homeless man who spends time outside his eatery.Nomad Donuts, 3102 University Ave., received a one-star review on Yelp complaining about the presence of the man known as "Ray."Brad Keiller responded to the review in part by saying: "I understand how you feel, it's not easy to look at. I know I probably lose some business, possibly yours too, because of my choice not to chase him away but I won't. He's not looking for handouts and he tries not to bother anyone. If you stop and talk with him maybe you'll come to like him too."That was last weekend, and since then the post has gone viral.RELATED COVERAGE:Some embarrassed by homelessness in Ocean Beach during bodyboarding festivalFacing It Together: San Diego college students cope with homelessnessHomeless heroes help Ocean Beach theft victim track down her bikeInstead of hurting business, it's done the opposite, drawing in more customers than ever. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A letter from Rep. Duncan Hunter’s attorney to the United States Deputy Attorney General discussed possible evidence of extramarital infidelity and excessive drinking. On August 6, Hunter attorney Gregory A. Vega wrote to Rod Rosenstein at the Department of Justice requesting the postponement of this week's campaign fund misuse indictment, and addressed “an overly aggressive prosecution intent on criminalizing content that is civil in nature”.“While there may be evidence of infidelity, irresponsibility, or alcohol dependence, once properly understood, the underlying facts do not equate to criminal activity; these allegations are, however, intended to embarrass and humiliate the Congressman shortly before a crucial election, and also to alienate him from his wife, the only other person under investigation and his intended co-defendant,” wrote Vega.Prosecutors allege the Hunters used more than 0,000 in campaign funds to support a lavish lifestyle and reported the purchases as campaign expenses. The affidavit detailed money spent on hotel rooms for different individuals and various social outings, including one involving 30 shots of tequila. The relationship between Hunter and each individual mentioned in the affidavit was not revealed.DUNCAN HUNTER INDICTMENT: 1316
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A political kingmaker is using his fortune to shake up the San Diego race for District Attorney. The first television ads are hitting airwaves now, little more than a month before the election. The element of surprise surrounds the tone of an ad paid for by billionaire George Soros. He’s known for backing progressive candidates and shaking up elections, usually with controversial ads.The ad lays out Geneviéve Jones Wright’s qualifications to be San Diego County’s next District Attorney. It does not attack her opponent Summer Stephan, which is what most politicos expected.Jones Wright told 10News she had not seen the ad.Stephan’s campaign manager said he’s surprised the ad is more of an introduction than an attack. Jason Roe also said there is no doubt in his mind the gloves will come off, based on what he called Soros’ pattern of negative and dishonest ads.Jones Wright filed a complaint with the attorney general claiming Stephan was basically campaigning on the job and using photo ops with law enforcement in her campaign materials.Stephan’s campaign manager called it a distraction. 1128
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North Park family is appealing for tips after a former high school football star - and recent college graduate - was injured in a drive-by shooting."They thought it was fireworks at first," said Dawn Kinder.Sisters Denisha Montgomery and Dawn Kinder say two Fridays ago, their brother Devante Kinder, 24, and three friends had spent a day at the beach and were driving up to his driveway near Meade Ave. around 9:40 p.m. Devante was at the wheel of the used Mercedes SUV he had saved up to purchase, when neighbors heard about nine shots ring out, and a car drive away. Devante was shot twice in the face."The only thing he could think of was to save his life, and he drove himself to the hospital," said Montgomery.Soon after, his sisters got the news."Unreal and didn't believe it at first actually. There is no way he could be injured in this way," said Montgomery. One of the bullet entered Devante's neck, shattered his cheekbone and lodged in his sinus cavity. The other one grazed his cheekbone."He's devastated ... asking himself why it was him," said Montgomery. His sisters say Devante does not have any enemies. Devante, a football standout at Mission Bay High School, went on to graduate from San Jose State six months ago. He returned home and recently got hired for engineering position in March."Starting his career, saving money. All he could talk about was buying his own condo," said Montgomery. Those plans have been put on pause by the drive-by shooting. Amid a national dialogue on racial injustice, Devante's sisters say they know many families impacted by violence."It's something that shouldn't be happening. We don't like to think it was the color of his skin. We don't want to," said Montgomery."But the thought is there as well," said Kinder.Devante remains on a feeding tube and faces a long road to recovery. A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with expenses.Witnesses saw a newer-model black Ford Mustang driving from the scene.
