SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park is facing a setback after thieves broke into the theater.According to San Diego Police, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the building between Oct. 17 and 19. The thieves ransacked two separate, secured structures on the property.A number of high-end television production systems, autographed guitars, studio cameras, and other items were stolen. “The doors were physically broken down,” said Steve Stopper, founder of Save Starlight. “There’s been a lot of vandalism and theft and they had to have been here a long, long time.”Stopper said his foundation has been working for five years to bring life back to the theater that closed down in 2012. The City of San Diego has offered support to his organization.Repairs were being completed after a tree came crashing down on the Starlight Bowl months ago, lifting asphalt in the parking lot and crushing part of the building.“This is definitely kicking us back to almost a starting point again,” said Stopper.Security cameras and alarms were turned off as repairs to the building were underway.Stopper said the items stolen were worth well over ,000. Many, including the autographed guitars, were set to be auctioned off at a gala next year in an effort to raise money for the revitalization project.“We need someone to step up and help us,” said Stopper. “We need new options for the future. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are increasing calls for more police oversight. In San Diego, a proposed measure would create a new independent body to investigate alleged misconduct. Both San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District Attorney Summer Stephan have pledged support for a new body to hold police accountable.Maresa Talbert with San Diegans for Justice said they welcome the support, but there is still some skepticism.“It seems very reactionary after all of this pressure that now they come out and support. This ballot measure is not a new thing. This has been proposed since 2012,” Talbert said.There is currently a Citizens Review Board on Police Practices, but Talbert said it is far from independent. “Their legal council is the city attorney, who represents both the Police Officers Association and the CRB so it represents a true conflict of interest,” Talbert said. The new proposed commission would have the ability to investigate cases. It would also have independent lawyers and subpoena power. The head of the San Diego POA said the support a measure on the ballot to let the people decide what is best for police oversight. “I think if people go into things with an investigative mind trying to find the truth, I think that any of these things can be very effective,” said POA President Jack Schaeffer. Talbert said even if passed, the city council still has to write an ordinance and some of the language could change. The benefit to help the family of 2-year-old Jedidiah King Cabezuela started at 4 p.m. at Rosie O’Grady’s restaurant in Normal Heights. Jedidiah’s great uncle Ed Sanford told 10News the boy suffered stomach problems four days after visiting the fair despite washing his hands after visiting the petting zoo. Over the next three days, Jedidiah was in and out of the emergency room before the symptoms worsened. His kidneys began failing, and he died June 24. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The trial of the Navy veteran accused of stabbing his wife, then dumping her body into the San Diego Bay, got underway today at San Diego Superior Court. Matthew Sullivan sat quietly next to his lawyers, nearly four years after the gruesome discovery of his wife, 32-year-old Elizabeth Sullivan. "She said, 'Hold on a sec.' And then she said 'I got to go,' quietly, and I didn't hear from her anymore," Calandra Harris said while wiping her tears. Harris described herself as Elizabeth's best friend. The two met while working together at Hampton University in Virginia. She said the last conversation she ever had with Elizabeth was on the day before she went missing in October 2014. Despite living on opposite coasts, Harris said she and Elizabeth talked every day. Harris said Elizabeth often consulted her about her tumultuous marriage with her husband. Both husband and wife filed domestic violence charges against each other, and the couple slept in separate rooms in the same Liberty Station home. So when Elizabeth went missing, Harris said she was worried, especially when she saw Sullivan's new Facebook post. "I noticed that he posted that he was in a relationship with Kay Taylor," Harris testified. "And when did you see that?" Deputy District Attorney Jill Lindberg asked. "Less than 30 days after and Liz was missing," Harris said. In October 2016, on the same day that Matthew was moving to Maryland with his new girlfriend and children, Elizabeth's decomposed body was discovered floating in the San Diego Bay. But they said the mother of two, who had infidelity issues and abused drugs and alcohol, hurt herself. "Elizabeth had broken a mirror," Defense Attorney Marcus DeBose said. "Taking a large shard of glass out of the mirror, she inflicted a deep wound.
