BURBANK, Calif. (KGTV) - A brush fire broke out Friday afternoon in the hills east of Burbank.Burbank firefighters and police officers closed roads near Sunset Canyon Drive and Harvard Road about 2 p.m.The location of the fire is above a residential neighborhood. Crews are evacuating hikers in the area.There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.The flames are burning near the site of the La Tuna Fire, which burned more than 7,000 acres and five homes in September 2017.10News is monitoring breaking developments.  545

CDC Director Robert Redfield suggested that the coronavirus pandemic could become even more dire in the fall, as the weather gets cold and people head indoors.As part of an interview with WebMD on Wednesday, Redfield said it is imperative to do four things to slow the spread of the coronavirus: Hand washing, social distancing, wearing a mask and avoiding large gatherings.“I’m not asking some of America to do it -- we all have to do it,” Redfield said.And if Americans do not follow these suggestions?"This could be the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we've ever had,” Redfield told WebMD.Redfield’s dire outlook comes as the US continues to top 1,000 coronavirus-related deaths reported on average each day, according to Johns Hopkins University. While as of late Thursday, there have been over 167,000 coronavirus-related deaths in the US, a New York Times analysis of death records throughout the US during the pandemic suggests that the true number of coronavirus-related deaths could be higher.While the seasonal flu is far less deadly than the coronavirus, Redfield hopes the pandemic will inspire more Americans to obtain a flu shot. Getting more Americans vaccinated could reduce the burden facing the health care system this fall.“Please don’t leave this important accomplishment of American medicine on the shelf,” Redfield said. “This is a year that I’m asking people to really think deep down about getting the flu vaccine.”Redfield hopes that the percentage of Americans who take a flu shot increases from 47% to 65% this fall.As for the origins of the pandemic, Redfield said a lack of cooperation with China complicated the US response to the virus. CAPE YORK, Australia – Australian scientists say they’ve discovered a massive new coral reef that’s taller than the Empire State Building.The scientists were aboard a research vessel exploring the sea when they found the detached structure in the Great Barrier Reef last week, according to a press release from the Schmidt Ocean Institute.The institute says the “blade-like” reef is the first to be discovered in over 120 years.On Sunday, the institute’s team conducted a dive using an underwater robot to explore the new reef and learned that it's more than 500 meters high, the base is about 1.5 kilometers wide and it rises to its shallowest depth of only 40 meters below the sea surface.The newly discovered reef adds to the seven other tall detached reefs found in the area since the late 1800s.“This unexpected discovery affirms that we continue to find unknown structures and new species in our ocean,” said Wendy Schmidt, co-founder of Schmidt Ocean Institute. “The state of our knowledge about what’s in the ocean has long been so limited. Thanks to new technologies that work as our eyes, ears and hands in the deep ocean, we have the capacity to explore like never before. New oceanscapes are opening to us, revealing the ecosystems and diverse life forms that share the planet with us.”This isn’t the institute’s first big discovery of the year, though. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - “Right now, it’s worse than I’ve ever seen it in my life. I see a new face come through here every day,” says Gregory Parada of Carlsbad. He has been homeless for several years.The City of Carlsbad reports there’s a growing number of homeless people in the community. A team of specially-trained police officers have been doing homeless outreach for the last eight months. As of last week, the City Council approved a 5,000 contract with Interfaith Community Services which will provide two full time socials workers to assist with outreach in the field. On Saturday, 10News was granted permission to ride along with law enforcement during “compassion enforcement”, as the city calls it. “That's as simple as connecting them to a family member [or they] might have hygiene needs and we have hygiene kits that we got from a bunch of nonprofits," says Sgt. Bryan Hargett. These officers are working to get the homeless population the items and services they need. The city of San Diego still has a much bigger homeless population than Carlsbad. According to San Diego County’s WeAllCount report, there are 4,912 homeless people in the City of San Diego. There are only 210 homeless people in the City of Carlsbad, but that’s up from 160 homeless people in Carlsbad last year.Davye Sauermilch tells us she’s considering getting help after her interactions with the officers. "My boyfriend's now in rehab because of these guys,” she adds.“I guess they protect me. I feel fine about them,” says Parada. Sgt. Hargett explains, “If they don't trust us, we're not going to be able to work together.” He adds, “One of the things we're learning about being out here is consistency. It could take us 30 contacts [with a person] and on the 31st they're like, ‘Hey, I want help now.’”Outreach coordinators will report back to the City Council on the progress of the initiative later this year. 1927

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) – At a virtual hearing on Tuesday, a San Diego judge ordered that the name could be revealed of the teenager who’s accused of killing a woman on a Carlsbad trail. Images of his face, however, were ordered to remain private.17-year-old Haloa Beaudet's defense counsel denies the allegations.He is suspected of stabbing Lisa Thorborg on Hosp Grove trail in November. “His DNA was found on the victim. We have him running on surveillance camera [video] away from the murder scene in a time that's consistent with the time of death,” said a detective.The prosecution showed a surveillance camera image of him running barefoot on the street, away from the trail at 11:25 a.m. on the day that Thorborg died. “We feel that she died at about 11:10 a.m. so that's about 15 minutes after she was murdered,” said the detective.Other surveillance camera images that were shown in the hearing captured the teen on the same trail in the days after the murder.Detectives said that a few days later, he was arrested for prowling on the trail. Once taken into custody, a sample of his DNA was taken. “Ultimately, they found that DNA from [Haloa’s swabs] matched the male DNA on Ms. Thorborg's shorts,” said a detective.Detectives also said that a pair of flip flops that they believe belong to the teen were discovered near Thorborg. His defense attorney argued that Thorborg may have discovered and picked up those flip flops, which was how she got his DNA on her.The teen's attorney said that there's no motive for a murder. His grandmother told the judge that he has no history of violence.The judge decided that the case can move forward.Beaudet’s next hearing is scheduled for January 25th.The teen is ordered to remain in-custody for the time being. 1770
