SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego police are investigating reports of a suspicious package near a downtown courthouse Tuesday.A package was discovered outside the courthouse at the corner of Union and W. B Streets just before 12 p.m., according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. Out of an abundance of caution, the area was secured and bomb arson investigators were called.Court proceedings were delayed for a short period of time.Upon further investigation, authorities found that the package contained an empty metal security box. No explosive or hazardous materials were found inside. 582

Customs and Border Protection officials announced the reduction of the commercial lanes at Otay Mesa from 10 lanes to 8 Tuesday. “4 to 5 hours,” said one driver who added another man in his fleet took more than 6 hours to make it across Wednesday. Companies say drivers are missing deadlines or just skipping the day altogether to avoid the delays. “They lose millions,” said driver Benjamin Alfaro on the already cumbersome process taking even longer, “so if they don’t do that in the normal time of course they lose money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are looking for two suspects witnesses say were part of a brutal attack where a man beat another man to the ground and hit him in the head with a sledgehammer.Robert Kern was driving on his way to run errands around 2:45 p.m. when he saw a man with long blonde hair pulled into a ponytail, wearing a black shirt and jeans, start attacking another man.He said the men were in the middle of the intersection of the Westbound 94 on-ramp at Kelton Road. Kern said the man punched and kicked the other man to the ground, then used a sledgehammer, hitting the man's head.Kern said a good Samaritan stepped in and broke up the fight, that's when Kern snapped a couple photos for police and called 9-1-1.The man who was attacked was taken to a local hospital. Inside the ambulance the man was writhing in pain. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are searching for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Mountain View last month.Police say 81-year-old Ruben Mendez was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection of South 45th St. and Logan Ave. on June 30 just before 7:30 p.m. An unknown, silver-colored vehicle was turning left onto Logan Ave. when it collided with Mendez. The vehicle then headed eastbound in the 4700 block of Logan Ave., police say.The vehicle did not stop to check on Mendez before fleeing the scene, police added.Mendez sustained major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 284 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, 69 of those cases connected to San Diego State University.Thursday's reported cases bring the region's total to 41,608 cases.Since the fall semester started on Aug. 24, San Diego State has reported 509 confirmed COVID-19 cases and four probable cases. Greeters, or wellness ambassadors, are also on campus to remind students of COVID-19 policies.Violation of the policies can result in suspension or in extreme cases, expulsion.Thursday, the California State University system, which includes SDSU, announced that course would continue to be held mostly online in Spring 2021, with certain limited instances for in-person classes."We have learned from experience that announcing this decision now will allow faculty and staff to continue or start professional development to be even more effective in the virtual space. We also know that deciding now will allow our students and their families time to plan appropriately. This decision is the only responsible one available to us at this time," says CSU Chancellor Timothy White.
