SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Flu cases have more than doubled in San Diego County than this time last year, health officials reported Wednesday. Six hundred patients have been diagnosed with influenza so far this flu season, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services (HHS) Agency. The number of cases soared last week, with 139 people diagnosed with the flu. During the same week last year, 57 flu cases were reported. Three people have died from the flu in San Diego County this season.RELATED: Third patient dies of flu this season in San Diego“Given the numbers that we’re seeing, it’s evident that more San Diegans are getting sick,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “And with the holidays upon us, those figures are likely to continue to increase since people will be out and about in large groups.” HHS officials urge San Diegans to receive a flu vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four Democrats running to be governor of California faced off in a debate in San Diego Thursday night.The San Diego County Democratic Party hosted the debate between John Chaing, Delaine Eastin, Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa.The Democratic Convention is set to begin Friday. The candidates were asked a wide range of questions from fixing the tax system to housing and small business.A topic that led the charge was the topic of gun control. All candidates said they support stricter gun laws.A poll released two weeks ago shows Newsom leading Villaraigosa 23 to 21 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homicide investigators have been assigned to look into a deadly fire in Logan Heights that claimed three lives. According to the San Diego Police Department, the investigators have been assigned “out of an abundance of caution.”Investigators will work closely with the metro arson strike team also looking into the incident, the department says. The fire started at a home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. The family’s oldest son, a 26-year-old, was unharmed in the fire. The 26-year-old said he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man told 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out.A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a heated battle over new regulations for short-term vacation rentals Wednesday, the San Diego City Council approved new regulations in a 6-2 vote.The new rules will go into effect July 2019.The rules, which were based on a plan by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, adopt the city’s first license-based system to manage the rentals, charge cost-recoverable fees to administer licenses and enforce code violations, establish a “Good Neighbor” policy to preserve neighborhood quality of life, hire additional staff to respond to complaints about nuisance properties, and implement a per-night fee that would generate funding for affordable housing projects.RELATED: San Diego City Council approves new rules on short-term rentalsAlthough the plan initially called for homeowners to be allowed two licenses for a primary and secondary home, the council later amended the provision before the plan passed its first vote in July.Faulconer’s proposal was changed to allow a host to be issued a license for a primary residence and a dwelling on the same land as the primary residence.Faulconer also had a provision in his plan allowing no limitations on the number of licenses available to hosts within Mission Beach when it was introduced in June.
