Federal health officials reported Thursday an additional 109 cases of cyclospora infection in an ongoing outbreak linked to McDonald's salads that began in May.The total number of laboratory-confirmed illnesses from this outbreak is now 395, according to a?statement from the US Food and Drug Administration. At least 16 of the sick individuals have been hospitalized.The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness in people who consumed contaminated food or water. Symptoms can begin a week or more after consuming the parasite. They include diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.The illness can last a few days to a few months, and patients might feel better but then get worse again. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics.Illnesses have been reported in 15 states: Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. However, the patients in Connecticut, Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia bought their salads in Illinois while traveling, and the Florida patient bought the salad in Kentucky.The FDA said an unused package of a Fresh Express salad mix of romaine lettuce and carrots that had been distributed to McDonald's tested positive for the presence of Cyclospora though it was past its July 19 expiration date."Epidemiologic evidence indicates that salads purchased from McDonald's restaurants are one likely source of these infections. The investigation is ongoing, and FDA is working to determine the sources of the ingredients that were in common to the salads served at McDonald's," the CDC said in an outbreak update posted on its website Thursday.McDonald's said in a?statement on July 13 that it had removed the salad mix from it's impacted restaurants and replaced it with a different supplier.In a?recall statement?on the Fresh Express website, the company said it had launched a "precautionary recall" of the institutional food service product on July 27 of a "limited number of cases."The statement said, "Fresh Express follows rigid food safety requirements and preventive controls throughout our supply chain that are carefully designed to mitigate against potential health risks."The company's salad mix recall was connected with a?public health alert issued Monday by the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service advising consumers that certain salad and wrap products might be contaminated with cyclospora. The products were sold by grocery stores including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens.In the alert, the USDA said the issue was discovered when Indianapolis-based food distributor Caito Foods "received notification from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine that is used to manufacture some of their salads and wraps was being recalled."The lettuce from McDonald's that tested positive for the cyclospora parasite was in the same lot as the lettuce distributed to Caito Foods, the CDC said Wednesday. ENCINITAS, Calif (KGTV) -- An Encinitas business owner is trying to spread awareness about the challenges her employees face when customers refuse to follow the public health orders issued during the pandemic.Kris Buchanan owns GOODONYA Organic on the 101 in Encinitas. She posted a video discussing what she calls "The great mask debate" with one of her employees.Alex, the employee, talks about how it's exhausting constantly reminding customers to wear a face covering, but Buchanan said her employees deal with much more than that."I think people should realize the issue is not the business and I'm not trying to skirt the issue. I'm just trying to be real, we can't enforce, we don't have the skills, we don't have the training, we don't have the money to go through the training, and I don't want to put my people in that situation," said Buchanan.Buchanan said her employees are dealing with customers who refuse to wear masks, but also customers who are upset that other people aren't wearing masks."I think every business has a responsibility to do the right thing, to follow the guidelines and so it's not like we're just, we don't want to talk about it, I think the point to know is we do try and, they don't listen to us," said Buchanan.She has spent thousands of dollars on PPE, moving the restaurant outdoors and increasing sanitation protocols, but she says there's not much she can do when crowds of people and tourists walk right past her outdoor tables without masks. She also paid for her employees to be tested after one of them caught COVID-19 in June."It's like, do you know how much money we're spending and what we are doing to even try to stay alive? And you're in for a snapshot in time, and you see something, and you threaten to turn us into the local authorities, I'm like I don't even know who that would be, but go ahead," said Buchanan.She points to a religious rally held recently at Cardiff State Beach. Thousands of people attended with few face coverings and little social distancing.A spokesman with California State Parks said a permit was not issued for the event and that the gathering was not allowed."When you saw the 1,000 people at Cardiff gathering, it was disheartening, that's right down the street from our business. So, we definitely got customers after that ceremony, and here they walk past the sheriff, they walk past the lifeguard and they walk past the state beach guys, who work for the state, didn't get a ticket, and now they come into some random cafe," said Buchanan.Instead of expecting employees to police guidelines, she encourages customers to contact their local elected leaders."Asking the cashiers, and the waitresses and the servers to kind of implement an escalated situation is not fair and not right, and it won't work anyway," said Buchanan.She hopes people will do the right thing."Do you want cops issuing tickets? FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County baker who has lost thousands of dollars due to postponed or canceled weddings is trying to help neighbors and keep her business afloat at the same time. Jennifer Duarte said owning a bakery is a dream she’s had since she was a child.“There was a bakery close to my house and the lady worked in the window,” said Jennifer Duarte, owner of Elegance on Display. “I would go and I would just stand there and watch her and said, when I grow up I want to do that.” That’s what she did. She has owned Elegance on Display in Fallbrook for 15 years. With the COVID-19 pandemic—and her specialty being wedding cakes—she’s lost a decent chunk of income.“I had 50 weddings postponed… maybe eight of those are canceling completely,” Duarte said. She has three employees, two of which she had to lay off. She hopes to be able to rehire her employees, but for now, she’s just trying to stay in business. With some items, like eggs, hard to find on store shelves, she’s using her connections to provide a service to her neighbors and also make some up some of her lost income. “We can order bulk through our bakery supplier. Last week, I got flour, sugar, eggs, and butter,” Duarte said. She repackages it in smaller amounts to sell to her neighbors. She said she isn’t making a big profit, but the community has been great lending their support. “So many people realize that there’s not a huge mark up on it. They’ve been tipping or volunteering to help with deliveries,”she added. Duarte is also still making cupcakes, cookies, and small cakes for people who would like to place an order. “I’m just trying to bring a little joy to everybody who’s stuck at home. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The oldest tree at North County’s San Diego Botanic Garden is finding new life as a work of art.The Eucalyptus cladocalyx was planted 100 years ago at the Encinitas garden. It had to be euthanized last year because it was leaning and posing a threat to visitors, officials said.Artist Erwin Young “Mitch” Mitchell IV took the 30-foot stump and transformed it into a replica of a baobab tree. He expects to be finished this week."The Garden is a wonderful place, not only to visit, but to create such a great endeavor there is fantastic - I appreciate the opportunity," said Mitchell. "It is the first time I have ever changed a tree into another tree. (KGTV) - A retired Escondido homeowner is figuring out how she'll pay for Thanksgiving dinner after everything she bought for the holiday was spoiled during a power outage.On a fixed income, Carol Marbrey purchased the meal at the beginning of the month.“I was never warned that my electric would be turned off, and then I was told it would be on by 7:30 AM, then I was told it would be on by noon, and this is all online, and then I was told it would five at night.”Marbrey came home that night to a dark house; power wasn't restored until the next day.The outage happened earlier this week during the extreme wind conditions and Red Flag Warning countywide.San Diego Gas & Electric says some customers weren't warned because it was a fluid situation, with weather conditions changing by the hour.  A spokesperson tells 10News after power is shut off, technicians must inspect hundreds of miles of lines before turning them back on.Marbrey says she called the company several times to understand the situation.“I was getting different answers as to why our electric was not going on," said Marbrey.An SDG&E spokesperson tells 10News they encountered an issue trying to re-energize Marbrey's circuit, by then it was getting dark, and they had to wait until the following day.Marbrey says she understands the necessity to keep the community safe but wishes she’d been better informed.She knows her situation could be a lot worse.“Our hearts really go out to those people that really suffered; we really respect the fire department, the electrical people that are on the ground, the maintenance people, everyone that's doing their best to keep us safe.”Marbrey estimates they lost 0 to 0 in spoiled food. Her efforts to get reimbursed by SDG&E have been unsuccessful so far.SDG&E says they generally don't reimburse spoiled food during an extreme weather situation, but that customers can still try and make a claim. 1967
