SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced his office is accepting penalty cancellation requests for homeowners and small business owners who were impacted by COVID-19 and missed the Dec. 10 property tax deadline.Property taxes unpaid after Dec. 10 incurred a 10% penalty. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and elements of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group deployed from San Diego Monday in support of global maritime security operations, Navy officials announced.Prior to departing, the strike group completed a composite training unit exercise called COMPTUEX, which is designed to fully integrate units of a carrier strike group while testing its ability as a whole to carry out sustained combat operations from the sea.Ships, squadrons and staffs have been tested across every core warfare area within their mission sets through a variety of simulated and live events, including air warfare, strait transits, and responses to surface and subsurface contacts and electronic attacks, according to U.S. Third Fleet public affairs."The carrier strike group team is trained and ready," said Rear Adm. Jim Kirk, commander of the strike group. "The men and women of Carrier Strike Group 11 have demonstrated exceptional tactical and technical expertise, teamwork and toughness. We are honored to answer the call and operate forward."In addition to conducting maritime security operations whenever and wherever called upon, strike-group units will participate in cooperative engagements, multilateral exercises and unit-level training designed to improve capability and capacity among Navy units and partner nations in the regions they may operate in.All personnel assigned to the group completed a minimum 14-day quarantine ashore and were tested for COVID-19 prior to getting underway with their respective units. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved spending million in federal pandemic-related funding to help child care providers, testing in schools and meals for senior citizens.The board directed million to child care providers, who have been struggling to stay afloat since March, in the form of grants.The county will also spend .8 million on senior food programs -- including an expanded Great Plates program that involves prepared meals delivered to the elderly -- while also supporting participating restaurants.The board voted to spend million to support the county Department of Public Health's testing, tracing and treatment strategy dedicated for kindergarten through 12th-grade schools.Last month, the board directed the county's chief administrative officer to make recommendations on how to spend the money.To implement the child care grants, CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer will negotiate agreements with The San Diego Foundation, the YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates, Inc.Supervisor Jim Desmond said while he has been critical of Great Plates program, based on the costs per meal, he understands it helps restaurants while also helping shut-in seniors who may not have any social interaction otherwise.Desmond added that if there's money left over from the program or school testing, it should go towards area food banks.In related actions following an update on county COVID-19 prevention efforts, the board approved Desmond's motion for a waiver to the school- closures mandate.The board also approved a separate motion allowing county enforcement of businesses -- in terms of complying with reopening requirements -- based on Phase 2 mandates. 1741

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously signed off on a program that will provide quick access to help for first responders dealing with a mental health crisis. The Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responder Behavioral Health Program will offer confidential mental and behavioral health support by connecting first responders with a clinical professional via a dedicated phone line, website or smartphone app. The program will be open to first responders in any jurisdiction or branch of public safety. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher proposed the program after speaking with firefighters and law enforcement officials around the county during a listening tour earlier this year. The program is named after Cal Fire Capt. Ryan Mitchell, who took his own life in 2017. Mitchell's father thanked the board for approving the program. William Mitchell, who is a fire department chaplain, said sharing his son's legacy ``brings healing to our broken hearts.'' Fletcher said the board ``took an important step in furthering its commitment to behavioral health services'' with their support of the program. ``First responders across San Diego County in the midst of a mental health crisis will be able to quickly access clinician assistance confidentially without the barriers that today are preventing them from getting the help they need,'' he said.
