A Girl Scout leader in Beaverton, Oregon was at the right place at the right time.Diane Bauer said she was at a Fred Meyer store on Wednesday when her teenage daughter Charlotte noticed a mother in distress at few aisles over.Bauer said her daughter was pointing to a baby a mother was holding – and realized the 5-week-old infant was not breathing. That's when the CPR-certified Girl Scout leader dropped everything and ran over to help.Bauer said she took the baby, told the cashier to call 911, and gave the newborn CPR.“The only room that was available was the little check writing stand,” said Bauer. “Those breaths started to go in and I continued until he came to, and in the meantime the mom was calling 911.”Soon, Bauer said she felt the baby's little heartbeat. After a few more breaths, the baby was alert and breathing on his own again.“Had the mom hold his hand, stroked his face and he kind of turned and nuzzled towards her like he was hungry,” said Bauer.Bauer said she and her daughter stayed until paramedics arrived. She credits her daughter for recognizing that the baby had stopped breathing.Bauer said she had just finished the CPR recertification at her job last month. 1204
With just five Democratic Party hopefuls for president left, two candidates emerged as clear frontrunners on a crucial night dubbed as “Super Tuesday.” Joe Biden, ex-President Barack Obama’s two-term vice president, asserted himself as a real contender to take the Democratic nomination. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who attained frontrunner status after winning races in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, is now locked into a battle with Biden. Meanwhile, the campaigns of Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg are in question. While Warren’s campaign presses on by adding several campaign events later in the week, Warren did not finish in the Top 2 in any of the 14 states up for grabs on Tuesday, including her home state of Massachusetts. Meanwhile, representatives for Bloomberg said that the candidate is returning to NYC to reassess his campaign. Bloomberg’s only victory on Tuesday came from the tiny US territory of American Samoa, which only had six delegates up for grabs. Also grabbing a delegate from the Pacific island was Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who was born on the island. The delegate was her first of the campaign. Bloomberg campaign manager Kevin Sheekey said that in the campaign's opinion, there is still time for Bloomberg to make up ground. This comes after Bloomberg sat out the first four nominating races. "Tonight, only one-third of delegates will be allotted," Sheekey said. "As Mike said tonight, 'No matter how many delegates we win tonight, we have done something no one else thought was possible.’ In just three months, we've gone from just 1% in the polls to being a contender for the Democratic nomination."The night started out great for Biden, as races in North Carolina, Virginia and Alabama were called early in the evening. He then went on to win in Tennessee, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Massachusetts. While Biden won at least eight of 14 states on Tuesday, Sanders won the largest delegate prize of the night California. As of 2:45 a.m. ET on Wednesday, only the race in Maine remains uncalled.Even before the polls closed in California, Sanders used his rally on Tuesday to contrast his record with Biden. “We're going to beat Trump because this will become a contrast in ideas,” he said. “One of us in this race led the opposition to the war in Iraq. You are looking at him."Meanwhile, a spirited Biden took a victory lap before his supporters in Los Angeles. "We're literally in a battle for the soul of America. Winning means uniting America, not sowing seeds of division and anger and hate,” Biden said. “We gotta beat Donald Trump and we will, but we can't become like him. We cannot have a never-ending war between the parties. We need a person who can fight, but make no mistake about it I can fight. But we need as badly someone who can heal."States called: Biden:AlabamaArkansasMassachusettsMinnesotaNorth CarolinaOklahomaTennesseeTexasVirginiaSanders: CaliforniaColoradoUtahVermontBloomberg:American SamoaToo Close to Call: Maine 3005
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- For the first time, we are hearing from the USPS mailman who survived a terrifying brush with death. Univision shared his hospital bed message on his road to recovery. He was on his normal route, making his normal deliveries. But in an instant, Romulo Ruiz's life changed forever. "Those brackets are holding my bones together," Ruiz said in Spanish. He went from totally healthy to bedridden after a horrific workplace accident. On September 12, 2019, the mail carrier was in National City, standing behind his truck. A man suffering a seizure behind the wheel struck Ruiz and pinned him against his vehicle. The wheels behind Ruiz continued to turn until witnesses stopped the car. "We got into the other car, and put it into reverse so we can release the USPS man, and he just fell to the ground," witness Mohammed Farha said. Then they cared for Ruiz until emergency crews took him to the hospital. Two weeks later, Ruiz is at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, recovering from his severe injuries. "The plan is, the doctors will place brackets inside my legs rather than have them outside," Ruiz said, pointing at his legs.Doctors said the road to recovery would be a long and tough one. But they also had good news. They were able to save his legs. "Then I will have normal use of my legs," Ruiz said. The Ruiz family has set up a Gofundme account for his medical expenses. 1409
DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - The timeline to reopen Jimmy Durante Boulevard in Del Mar has been pushed back to June 4 at the earliest. At Monday’s City Council meeting, city officials said they planned to meet with San Diego County Fair officials on Tuesday. They will discuss a traffic plan as Jimmy Durante Boulevard is a main artery into the fairgrounds. The fair opens May 31 before the road is expected to reopen. The northbound lanes of Jimmy Durante Boulevard, north of Luzon Avenue, closed in late April following a bluff collapse. Del Mar city leaders were hoping to get it reopened by Memorial Day, but a series of complications pushed the timeline back. The schedule could get further delayed due to weather and the Memorial Day holiday. The cost of cleanup and stabilizing the cliff is expected to cost close to million. The city council voted to declare a local emergency which would allow the city to qualify for federal emergency funds to supplement the cost. The cause of the bluff collapse is still under investigation. 1053
"A storm's a comin', baby."That's what the actual Stormy Daniels said to Alec Baldwin's President Donald Trump on this week's edition of "Saturday Night Live." The actress appeared in the cold open alongside many other big names that surround Trump. One such name was Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, played by Ben Stiller."What's up, amigo? How are you holding up in prison?" Baldwin's Trump said to Stiller's Cohen over the phone."I'm not in prison," said Stiller's Cohen, who called Baldwin's Trump from a pay phone."Oh well, give it a couple of weeks," the faux president responded.Baldwin's Trump then said to call another one of his lawyers, Rudy Giuliani, played by Kate McKinnon, saying that he has "the sharpest mind since 'My Cousin Vinny.'"However, Cohen accidentally phoned Trump's former personal doctor, Harold Bornstein, played by Martin Short."This is Harold Bornstein. Would you like to know any of patient's medical history?" Short as Bornstein asked before Stiller's Cohen called Giuliani, who was appearing on Fox News during the call.Giuliani, who said he had other TV appearances lined up to give away secret information, was then looped by Cohen. But without his knowledge, FBI agents were also listening in on the phone call.Trump and Cohen then connected others like Aidy Bryant's Sarah Sanders, Beck Bennett's Mike Pence, Cecily Strong's Melania Trump, Leslie Jones' Omarosa Manigault and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who were played by Scarlett Johansson and Jimmy Fallon. Then Daniels got brought into the party line of calls as well."What do you need for all of this to go away?" Baldwin's Trump asked Daniels."A resignation," she responded to cheers from the audience.Daniels and Baldwin's Trump then opened the NBC variety show with its catch phrase, "Live from New York ... It's Saturday night!" 1834
