ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 57-year-old man in a pickup truck was killed at a head-on collision in Escondido with a Honda Accord, a police lieutenant said Saturday.The crash involving the 2005 Honda Accord and a 1996 Toyota Tacoma occurred on Valley Parkway, north of Beven Drive, said Escondido police Lt. Michael Kearney.The Honda was going west on Valley Parkway and the pickup truck was going eastbound on Valley Parkway, just north of Beven Drive, at the time of the crash, Kearney said.Police were dispatched to the scene at 11:30 p.m Friday, where the 57- year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics rushed the motorist in the Honda, a 36-year-old man, to Palomar Medical Center, where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries, he said.Escondido police asked witnesses to the crash to call them at (760) 839-4470. 851

(KGTV) - Neighbors are calling for action from the City of Encinitas after a pair of crashes along a stretch of Manchester Avenue."It's too fast," says Judy Blanchard, who lives on Manchester. "They need to do some traffic calming."Friday, a car lost control coming around a curve near the 4200 block of Manchester Avenue and crashed into a light pole. Two days before that, a pair of cars collided near the same spot.People who live nearby say speed on the road is a constant problem."People gun it. They really do," says Blanchard. "All these wannabe fast drivers, it's exciting for them to come through the curve."Blanchard had a car crash through her front yard a few years ago. They sent this statement from the City Manager's Office:“Based on the California Vehicle Code (CVC) and California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA-MUTCD), an Engineering and Traffic Study (Speed Survey) was conducted in 2017 which showed the 85th percentile speed (the speed at or below which 85 percent of all vehicles are observed to travel under) on this roadway was 47 mph. As a result, the speed limit was set by the City at 40 mph which is the lowest speed limit legally allowed based on the results of the Speed Survey. Employees at the Buffalo Museum of Science found something they didn't know they had in their collection.According to Kathy Leacock, director of collections, that isn't difficult to do considering that the museum has over "700,000 items in their collection."What they found was an egg from the now extinct Elephant Bird. It's huge to say the least, weighing 3 1/2 pounds. The egg was not really lost, it was just thought to be a model or a replica. That's how it had been mislabeled for many years. "We found in our documentary evidence that's it's been here since 1939," Leacock said. There are only a handful of the rare eggs in existence.The Elephant Bird is believed to have gone extinct around the 17th century. ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws.The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers.
