GUATAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family in the East County is hoping someone has information about a bicycle accident that happened Saturday afternoon in Guatay, just north of Pine Valley. Ann Larkin says her husband, Warren Larkin, was returning from a bike ride along old Highway 80, and was just feet away from his home, when a good Samaritan found him in the middle of the road. Larkin was airlifted to Sharp Memorial Hopsital with 10 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a broken clavicle. He doesn't remember anything about the crash.Ann tells 10News she doesn't want to speculate but worries that someone hit her husband on his bike and took off, since hospital staff told her his injuries were more traumatic than just falling off a bike. The Larkin family is now hoping that by sharing their story, they can find someone who witnessed the accident and can provide clues about what happened. 899

Google has rolled out a new feature on its Maps app: traffic lights at intersections.Users on an Android and IOS will be able to see the traffic signals at crossroads throughout US cities, according to CNN.According to CNN, the traffic light features have been available in Japan for years.In August, Google unveiled a way for users to see on the app a way to identify easier terrain like beaches and forests with a "color-mapping algorithmic technique." It also has re-drawings of sidewalks and pedestrian islands for better navigation viewing. 553

Have you heard of the "Dirty Dozen" list? Every year, it lists the 12 fruits and veggies that have the most pesticides. Now, one group of researchers says the list may be scaring people unnecessarily.Laura Molina works to make sure her customers at her community market, Growhaus, pick the best fruits and veggies.“We try to bring everything organic and local,” Molina said.It ends up being a mix. So, when customers ask her how to pick between organic and conventional, she often gives them advice she takes herself.“Everything that I can peel, I can buy, like, not organic,” Molina explains. “But like lettuce, mushrooms, apples, I try to buy them organic.”But is there a set rule for choosing? Every year, a nonprofit called the Environmental Working Group puts out the "Dirty Dozen," a list of the 12 fruits and veggies most contaminated by pesticide residue.This year, apples, celery and tomatoes made the list.However, a group of scientists say these foods may not be as dirty as some once thought, and the way the EWG analyzed the data is flawed.“The benefit of fruits and vegetables far outweighs the potential concern of this pesticide residue,” registered dietitian Jessica Crandall said.Crandall says consumers would have to eat a lot of a certain fruit or vegetable to be affected by any pesticides.“You would have to be eating so many cups,” Crandall said. “Like 400-plus cups of strawberries per day in order for that residue to be a potential concern if you're an adult. And if your kid, needs to be around 200 cups per day of strawberries.”Those concerned about pesticides in produce can visit safefruitsandveggies.com to check pesticide levels in any produce item.Ultimately, the decision shouldn't be based on a list.“I believe it is a personal choice,” Crandall said. “And so if you like the way that it tastes, better then to go ahead and consume. We're paying more than 4% more.The USDA says prices are still expected to increase between 2.5% and 3.5% this year.The vice president of operations for one pasta brand says the price increase is related to promotions being canceled. He says manufacturers haven't had to offer them because of how sales have been.The pandemic has changed shopping habits too.“Many people keep lists, but not everyone, so people really like those impulse purchases,” said Melanie Zanoza Bartelme, Global Food Analyst at Mintel. “They like seeing kind of what the new things are, so I think in the future, we're going to see a great emphasis on figuring out how to sort of translate that for e-commerce and translating that even for the efficient grocery shopping, so maybe some of it is done in marketing, maybe some of it happens outside the store.”Bartelme says her company's research shows that even when the pandemic is over, people say they plan to do more home cooking. She says not to expect all the changes we've seen with store design to go away either.“I definitely think in store design going forward, we're going to see a lot more emphasis on safety and wider aisles and maybe putting in some of those technologies right at the start that can make these things more efficient and a way to pivot and be flexible when this or another type of issue comes up.”Another trend she expects to continue is people having an interest in supporting local with how they're getting their groceries. 1548

Hotels are still struggling to fill rooms like they were before an avalanche of cancellations starting in March.Now, travelers are slowly returning to train stations, airports, and hotels.“This is something that none of us were expecting or were prepared for,” said Daniel del Olmo, the President and COO of Sage Hotel Management, a Sage Hospitality Group company. Sage Hospitality Group manages 52 hotels across the U.S.“We went from basically a level of revenue of million on a daily basis to effectively ,000 per day in early May,” del Olmo said.“The economic impact has been something that no one could have ever prepared for, you could not have prepared for it financially, you could not have even prepared for it psychologically or emotionally,” said Chip Rogers, President of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. “2020 will go down on record of having the lowest occupancy in the history of the hotel industry and that includes during the Great Depression.”The association represented the entire industry from large brands to small hotels.For smaller companies, the impact of COVID-19 is especially difficult on their bottom line. “Well over 60% of all hotels are actually classified as small businesses by the Small Business Association,” Rogers said.“In the third week of March, we found ourselves having to furlough over 90% of our staff,” del Olmo said.“With no further assistance, about two thirds of hotels say they cannot make it another six months,” Rogers said. Del Olmo said they haven’t reached that point.“We have not had to permanently close, thankfully, any of our properties,” he said. But others have. Fewer visitors means less money and less work.“We’re right at almost 2 million jobs lost in the hotel industry,” Rogers said.Del Olmo said Sage Hospitality had to furlough 5,000 employees, then eventually lay off 4,000. “What keeps us up at night,” Del Olmo said, “is how we bring our associates back to work.”In the meantime, the group is providing help for former employees. “We initially established a Sage Associate Relief Fund, which allowed us to basically provide pantry items to our associates in need,” he said.While employees still on the job were given more tasks to help fill the gap. “Everybody basically on the teams is doing multiple jobs that, in the past, they might have never done before. We have general managers that on a daily basis strip beds and run the parking,” Del Olmo explained.As hotels continue to balance health, safety and running a business, they are getting creative with ways to bring in revenue, such as hosting micro weddings and hallways concerts with musicians.“Basically roaming the halls. You basically could be listening from the comfort and safety of the entry from your room,” Del Olmo said.Even with the creative new solutions, Rogers said without aid or an uptick in travel, some hotels may suffer.“We may be a much smaller industry in the next couple of years but we will adapt,” Rogers said. 2988
