(CNS) - The Beverly Hills City Council Tuesday evening approved an emergency ordinance banning house-to-house trick or treating on Halloween due to the coronavirus pandemic.The ordinance also prohibits providing candy or other Halloween treats or toys to any person outside their household on Oct. 31, car-to-car trick or treating and spraying shaving cream on others, except within their home or residence or licensed barbers on their customers."While I know this is disappointing news, especially to our children, we believe this is the responsible approach to protect the health of the community," said Mayor Lester Friedman.Violators of the restrictions will be subject to citation.City staff is working to develop virtual Halloween events that follow social distancing protocols, according to Keith Sterling, the city's public information manager.The city also announced the following streets will be closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, other than to residents who live on them, between 6-10 p.m. Halloween night:-- Carmelita Avenue at Wilshire Boulevard-- Walden Drive southbound at Elevado Avenue-- Walden Drive at Santa Monica Boulevard-- Carmelita Avenue westbound at North Linden Drive-- The alley between North Linden Drive and Walden Drive from Santa Monica Boulevard to Elevado AvenueThe "Witch's House," long Beverly Hills' top Halloween attraction, is located at the southeast corner of Walden Drive and Carmelita Avenue, one block north of Santa Monica Boulevard and one block west of Linden Drive.As is customary on Halloween, parking restrictions will be in effect in the northeast portion of the city at the border with West Hollywood. 1690

For the last 23 years, the Stephan family has operated the restaurant at the location. Several months ago, they learned their landlord wouldn’t renew their lease, replacing the pizza shop with a Starbucks. “I cannot believe it anyways; my last day is just so hard because I’m here every day, seven days a week,” said Nisreen Stephan, whose customers call her Nancy. After she makes her last pizza, Nancy says she’ll take some much needed time off and always cherish the memories she made at the shop. Nancy says she isn’t sure if Giant Pizza King will reopen in another location. If she decides to reopen the restaurant, she says she’ll make sure to let everyone know. 792

Baseball's Cleveland Indians are going to drop their nickname after 105 years, the New York Times first reported on Sunday. In July, the Indians stated they were reconsidering their nickname. Cleveland’s baseball club have been known as the Indians since 1915. For much of that time, the Indians logo was known as “Chief Wahoo,” but in recent years has been mostly phased out. The Indians wore the logo for the final time in 2018.Activists say that the Indians and Redskins nicknames promote ethnic stereotyping.The National Congress of American Indians has been opposed to nicknames such as the Indians and Redskins, as it wrote in a 2013 report.Before the 2020 NFL season, Washington's football team dropped the "Redskins" nickname, and has gone by the "Washington Football Team" moniker."The professional sports industry, specifically the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL) and the leagues’ team owners have failed to address the racist origins of deplorable race based marketing strategies of the past," the report read.
