SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wendy Caceres smiled as two salon workers doted over her hair and makeup. It was a momentary break from the last two-and-a-half months when she's been worried about many things, least of all herself. On August 15, Caceres gave birth to her son Santino at 29 weeks. He's been in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital ever since."Very traumatizing, honestly," Caceres said over the hum of hair dryers at Robert Cromeans Salon downtown. "I don't take time for myself really," she said. "It's really cool they did this, honestly."Caceres was one of eight NICU moms treated to a hair and makeup makeover at the salon Monday during an event organized by March of Dimes. The event came on the same day the March of Dimes released a report card showing the premature birth rate in the U.S. rose for the fourth straight year to 10.02 percent.Preterm birth rates worsened in 30 states. California fared better than the national average. In San Diego County, the rate actually improved year-over-year to 8.4 percent. It's still largely a mystery why some women deliver early. Still, March of Dimes says there are several known risk factors, including poverty, lack of health insurance, and inadequacy of prenatal care. The March of Dimes issued a number of policy recommendations nationally, including: Expanding group prenatal care.Ensuring that women have access to public health insurance programs.Expanding Medicaid to cover individuals with incomes up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level to improve maternal and infant health.Making sure all women have Medicaid coverage for at least one year postpartum. To read the full report, click here. 1667

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across the country, there have been reports of racial discrimination against the Asian Pacific Islander community (API), including here in San Diego County.Erin Chew said she was wrapping up her grocery shopping trip in San Marcos when a man made eye contact with her and began speaking loudly about Asians."He just looked at me and started talking extremely loud to his partner or wife Looking at me saying Chinese people eat all this dirty stuff, eating bats and everything," Chew explained. She said the man also said, "I blame all the Chinese people for bringing this virus into this country."The incidents are not just happening out in public."My organization, SDS U'S Filipinx and Filipinx-American organization Andres Bonifacio Samahan was recently Zoombombed by a group of unknown individuals slandering us," said SDSU student Cristal Ami.Video from the Zoom meeting shows a group of unknown people yelling things like, "All you Asians have coronavirus!"In San Leandro, hate-filled notes were left on several homes, one read, "You have until May 23, Saturday at 10:30 AM to leave this country. No Asians allowed."An online reporting center called Stop AAPI Hate has been documenting the number of reported incidents against Asian Pacific Islanders across the country. As of April 29, it has received 1,711 reports, including 28 across San Diego County. The incidents range from verbal harassment and shunning, to physical assault. The San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (SD API) Coalition is working with San Diego Council President Georgette Gomez and Councilmember Monica Montgomery to put a resolution in front of the entire city council that will address the racial discrimination locally. The resolution proposes that the city should document and report hate crimes through Stop AAPI Hate and work with SD API to use the reported information to create targeted education and provide resources to those affected personally.SD API also said the city council would encourage the city's Human Relations Commission to address and investigate reported incidents. The city council will vote to adopt the resolution on June 2. 2150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego police officers answered an unusual call to duty when an emergency struck, leaving two young children alone.SDPD officers Daniel Clark and Adrianni Vital have been a part of the department for about a year.Last Friday night, police received a call about a father in San Ysidro having a medical emergency, but he did not have any family or others to watch his two young daughters. After he was taken to the hospital, Clark and Vital stayed behind to watch the man’s 2-year-old and 4-year-old daughters.“Just to put a smile on their face, it meant a lot, it was a great interaction; it just made my day,” said Vital. “We just want to show people that we are human, too, and we do want to give back, and sometimes it comes in different shapes and sizes in how we do it."The officers did everything they could to keep the girls entertained so they would not worry about their dad.Using his own experience as a father, Clark learned more about the children’s likes and dislikes, and the officers eventually found out the girls loved the song “Baby Shark.”ABC 10News learned the girls’ father is doing OK and the family was reunited after about two hours. 1190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego mother and daughter who both have Type 1 Diabetes are navigating the disease together.Keary and Zola Chaney are among the first to use a new device which sends life-saving alerts to your smartwatch or cell phone. The Dexcom G6 is a small sensor that monitors blood sugar levels 24 hours a day and requires no finger-pricking. The FDA-approved sensor is easy to put on and can be worn for 10 days. "I feel like I have more control and diabetes has less control over me, which is the most freeing feeling in the world," said Keary, Zola's mom. Keary says Dexcom, a San Diego-based company, is not only simplifying their lives but also saving them, especially when their blood sugar levels get low. Keary can monitor both her and Zola's blood glucose levels on her smartphone, even if they're thousands of miles apart. The device will be readily available to consumers in June and is covered by most insurance companies.   1007
