SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida — Sheriff Tom Knight announced the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is seeking candidates to protect 12 of its elementary schools in the county.The sheriff is looking to hire 14 candidates to fill the newly designed School Resource Deputy II position.“It has been our goal from day one to identify a practical and cost-effective solution for the school district,” said Sheriff Knight. “After ample research and internal review, we put together a program that is not only compliant with the new law, but will stand to benefit the district and its students, while appealing to law enforcement-certified career seekers looking to give back to this community. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a shooting involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection near the San Ysidro Port of Entry Monday night. The San Diego Police Department told 10News the suspect is a 23-year-old man in a white pickup truck who was trying to drive into the United States from Mexico.Police say he had been directed to a secondary screening area but failed to stop for an inspection and began firing at border agents. The man attempted to drive away, but authorities shot back. SDPD said at least seven CBP officers fired their weapons, killing the driver.According to a witness who was driving to the border from National City, police could be heard telling someone to pull over. The witness added that a police helicopter could also be seen in the area. San Diego Police say they're helping with the shooting investigation, which originally involved Border Patrol and CBP. SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) - Dozens of migrants filled out paperwork in Tijuana, getting ready to file for asylum ahead of the caravan.The Mexican city already flooded with migrants waiting for their turn to be processed at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.Lilia Velasquez, an Immigration Specialist and Lawyer, said the process could take months or even years. First, she said a group of about 10 migrants get a number. When they're called, they are processed and detained.It could take months to get to that step, which is why a group is given the same number. Velasquez explained many decide not to go through the process, or to find another way over the border.Next an agent is assigned to their case and conducts a credible fear interview, determining whether the migrant falls under 5 classifications; facing persecution for religion, ethnicity, nationality, political opinion, or being a member of a special group.READ RELATED:?First group of migrants from caravan arrive in TijuanaThen, the migrants face a judge. Whether or not they are granted asylum, the migrants then face another judge on charges for entering the country as a foreign citizen. (KGTV) - NOAA has issued a La Nina Watch, which means a dry winter and longer fire season are possible this year for Southern California.This stems from colder water along the equator in the Pacific which has a domino effect on other parts of the world, including an increased risk of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean due to weaker winds and also higher chances for a dry winter over Southern California because of a lack of moisture. A lack of winter rain means the fire season could be longer than usual.“So that means we enter the fall critically dry and then when you add a La Nina on top of that, it adds concern because we could likely go longer into the winter without seeing significant or beneficial rain,” said meteorologist Alex Tardy from the National Weather Service’s San Diego office.He said it’s not quite black and white though. According to the NOAA, there's about a 50% to 55% chance of a La Nina occurring this year, which will be monitored as the winter season approaches. Also, in the past 10-15 years, La Nina years and El Nino years have proven to be not as extreme as previously thought.
