(KGTV) — A man drowned Wednesday after border officials say he tried to swim across an Imperial County canal and enter the U.S. illegally.The man, whose identity and nationality were not immediately known, was spotted swimming across the All-American Canal around 9 p.m. Wednesday along with two others, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a Friday news release.Border agents immediately apprehended two of the men when they made it across the canal, which runs parallel and just north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The third man, however, struggled to stay afloat, border officials say. Agents resumed their search Thursday morning and found the man's body about 150 yards from where he's suspected of entering the water, about two miles west of the Gran Plaza Outlets in Calexico.“This incident tragically illustrates how human smuggling organizations place migrants in perilous situations,” Chief Patrol Agent Gloria Chavez said in the release. “This man put his trust in human smugglers and it cost him his life."The two men seen with the victim are both nationals of El Salvador, according to CBP. CARLSBAD (KGTV) — The new reality that major theme parks like Legoland won't be able to reopen for months is reverberating well beyond the gates.That's because local businesses are no longer able to draw much-needed customers from the park."When they're down, it gives all the leisure marketplace reason to pause and say, do we want to travel?" said Tim Stripe, co-president of Grand Pacific Resorts, which owns multiple hotels and timeshares within walking distance of Legoland.The governor's office announced this week that major theme parks such as Legoland could not open until counties enter the least restrictive tier of coronavirus restrictions. San Diego County is two tiers away, meaning the move could take months. Bret Schanzenbach, CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, said there are many reasons to visit the city, including golf, beaches, and the outlet mall, but nothing brings tourists like Legoland. "The explosion of hotels that we've had since Legoland opened is undeniable, and the skyrocketing of our tourism dollars in this area since Legoland has opened is undeniable," he said. "All those other amenities are great and they play off of each other, but Legoland is the biggest draw in North San Diego County."Stripe said his company has closed one of its hotel facilities, while the other two are at 40% capacity, with employment cut in about half. He said the hotels get 20% of their guests directly because of Legoland. It's not just hotels, but also restaurants. Carlsbad's Green Dragon Tavern and Museum is taking a double hit. Not only is the restaurant losing out on tourists — about 20% of its business — but also the corporate events Legoland used to host there."We're definitely looking forward to the day where these attractions can come back and we hope Legoland is going to stick through it," said john lek, its senior vice president.The governor's office says major theme parks are risky because they attract out of towners.Legoland currently has about 100 employees, down from 3,000 pre-pandemic. 2045

"COVID cars are cars that have been sitting around for a long time and the batteries do not work," Bob Gugino, owner of Bison Automotive said. Gugino says he has seen a number of cars with similar issues with rotting brakes, dead batteries and severe neglect. "Every day people are working more and more from home so this is a consequence of that," Gugino said. These consequences of cars just sitting around are happening to vehicles of all ages. "All cars, whether new or old," Gugino said, "It affects the older ones a little bit more but every car, if it's not run, can have the battery die and the brakes rot out."The best way to make sure that does not happen? Drive your car around even if you don't plan on going anywhere. CARLSBAD (KGTV)-- Four years after the devastating wildfires in San Diego County, plants have grown back and neighbors rebuilt and recovered.The 2014 wildfires raged through neighborhoods, up over hills, turning at a moment's notice fueled by the Santa Ana winds. "It looked like a war zone of black smoke everywhere all over the place of all the roads blocked off," Homeowner Bob Payne said.He was at his relative's home when he got the call, and rushed back Carlsbad to see what he could do. He said he was lucky to have been out of town, otherwise he said he would've been on his driveway fighting the flames with a garden hose.His home was one of 65 structures that burned. Firefighters fought as 14 separate fires grew, eventually?covering 26,000 acres.At Bob's home, all that was left was a safe, full of photos of smiling children and their wedding memories. It took two and a half long years, to rebuild. He didn't want to leave their prime hilltop location, close to the beach and to town."It looks different, we changed our house some. We kept the same floor plan but we put in a couple perks in there which is nice," Bob said they had a pool put in and some exterior and interior designer changes.Nearby SDG&E did an update of their own, switching out wood poles for more durable metal ones."It burned up here and the and the fire department said it was 65-foot flames that came up and went to the attic of the house and burned it down," Bob said, explaining the fire flew up one of the poles and arched down to the roof of his home.Bob said he would never forget the generosity of the neighbors and complete strangers who gave everything from clothes, to food, to necessities to help his family through the disaster."I wish everybody a happy's Mother's Day on this day and count your blessings, and just enjoy your family and enjoy your health and everything that you have," saying he's thankful for the things that can't be touched by flames. 1992

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey passed away on Saturday, according to festival CEO Marian Goodell. He was 70 years old.Goodell made the announcement through a blog post on Burning Man's website. She says that Harvey suffered a massive stroke on April 4. He passed away peacefully on April 28 in San Francisco with family members at his side."Burning Man culture has lost a great leader and an inspiring mind," Goodell wrote in the blog post.
