CARLSBAD— It's the winter sport most famous for being a bit odd. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego.Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president.The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible.In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points.The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego.The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. (KGTV) -- Four wild mice collected during routine monitoring in the Campo area have tested positive for hantavirus, county health officials say.The mice, that were collected in open space in Campo, included two California mice, one deer mouse, and one brush mouse.The mice brought the total number of rodents that have tested positive for the virus so far this year around the county to 22.Health officials say people are unlikely to be exposed to the virus because rodents generally want to live and nest away from people.The county is also reminding residents that they should never sweep or vacuum up after rodents if they find them living in spaces like homes, sheds, or garages. Instead, people are encouraged to use “wet-cleaning” methods.People are exposed to hantavirus when the urine, feces, and saliva dries and is stirred into the air and inhaled.There is no cure or vaccine for the virus and it is potentially deadly, the county says.See tips from the county below on how to use wet-cleaning methods:Avoid Exposure to Hantavirus· Seal up all external holes in homes, garages and sheds larger than a dime to keep rodents from getting in.· Eliminate rodent infestations immediately.· Avoid rodent-infested areas and do not stir up dust or materials that may be contaminated with rodent droppings and urine.· Clean up rodent droppings and urine using the wet cleaning method described below.Use “Wet-cleaning” Methods to Prevent Inhaling the Virus· Do not sweep or vacuum infested areas.· Ventilate affected area by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes.· Use rubber gloves. CARSLBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- If there's anyone in Carlsbad that knows food, it Cheri Poulos. Poulos is the founder of Carlsbad Food Tours, a tour that gives locals and tourists a taste of the city. Poulos has a blog where she writes about the best places to eat in the city. The food lover offers two different types of tours, one called the Taste of Carlsbad and one called the Indulgence Food tour. Private tours are also available. 10News went along with Poulos for one of the food tours. The first stop was at Gregorio's Italian Kitchen, known for giving back to the community. At one point, the restaurant donated all of their proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club. From Gregorio's the tour continued to Caldo Pomodoro, home to what some call the best garlic bread in the county. Portraits of Caldo Pomodoro's owners hang over the entrance of the restaurant. The restaurant's founders are a borther and sister duo, Fran and Gina. Fran was a Hollywood hairdresser and pictures of his clients adorn the walls of the restaurant. Fran has since passed away, his sister Gina now runs the restuarant. The tour also includes some stops at several sweet spots, including a gourmet donut shop called, The Goods. The Goods is the sister restaurant of Cafe Topes, a staple in town known for their cinnamon rolls. Both locations are run by the Barille family. The tour then continues to Gelato Love, a family-run gelato shop. The shop is owned by Paola Richard and her cousin, Christina. Gelato Love is the only shop in the entire country that doesn't use any added sugar, only sugar from the fruit itself. The tour also stops at other local favorites like Vigilucci's Gourmet Market, Witch Creek Winery and Humble Olive Oils. The tour operates daily, seven days a week. (KGTV) - After Monday's arrest in the death of a Carlsbad woman found on a hiking trail, prosecutors must now decide whether to charge the teenage suspect as an adult.A 17-year-old teen from Carlsbad was booked on murder charges weeks after Lisa Thorborg, 68, was found stabbed to death along Hosp Grove Trail.Investigators tell ABC 10News police work led them to the teenager, before DNA evidence confirmed their suspicions. Former District Attorney turned criminal defense attorney Paul Pfingst says prosecutors must now decide whether the accused should be tried as an adult."An adult for a first-degree murder case can receive a 25 years-to-life sentence. A juvenile can only be kept until the age of 25," said Pfingst.A decade ago, Pfingst represented Heather D'Aoust. At the age of 14, she killed her mother with a claw hammer. D'Aoust was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 years to life.Pfingst says unlike in that case -- thanks to new state laws -- if prosecutors do charge the 17-year-old as an adult in the Carlsbad case, a judge will have the final say."The more dangerous that person is, they most likely they are to be charged as an adult," said Pfingst.Pfingst says the biggest factor is the crime itself."Is the act is such that it demonstrates such a wanton disregard for life and for people around them that the person needs too be confined?" said Pfingst.Pfingst says the background of the suspect will heavily scrutinized."Including whether they've been involved with gang activity, prior acts of violence, prior acts of rebellion," said Pfingst.Police in the Carlsbad case declined to say if the teen has a criminal history. Pfingst says the extensive background check is likely underway as prosecutors weigh their decision."What does the protection of community protection require? Longer incarceration or does it require juvenile attempts at rehabilitation?" said Pfingst.A detention is scheduled for Thursday in juvenile court. 2002
