INDIANAPOLIS — Going back to work after giving birth is never easy. One Indianapolis mother had to endure not only everyday life with a newborn but controversy with pumping breast milk at her place of employment.Katrina Culhane returned from maternity leave in July of after having her son, Hunter. She worked for the Indiana BMV's central office in downtown Indianapolis. To continue breastfeeding, she needed to pump at work."I thought being the state they would have a plan for me," Culhane said.Culhane says her options on location to pump were extremely limited. One choice was to go up several floors to another department where another mother was often using a room. Her second choice was to reserve a conference room."They kept promising it to employee relations that they were going to have a room and they never had a room," Culhane said. "It wasn't OK that I had to constantly pump in the bathroom."Culhane says she felt frustration from her bosses when needing to adjust her scheduled breaks to make her reservation in the conference room."I worked hard for them. They treated me like dirt. They made me feel like crap. I just want to go pump," Culhane said. "It was stressful. Every single day...it was so stressful."State law requires the following from state and political agencies:Paid breaks to pump.Reasonable effort to provide a room or other location other than a toilet stall.Reasonable efforts to provide a refrigerator to keep breast milk cold."It is absolutely important for a workplace to support these moms, especially when you are first going back to work," Lauren Duncan, a certified lactation specialist, and Donor Mother Coordinator at The Milk Bank, said.RTV6 reached out to the BMV to get a response to this situation. A spokesperson said Culhane was fired for violating the state's workplace harassment prevention policy. The spokesperson also told RTV6 there are plans to add a private room for mothers to breastfeed on the fourth floor of the building where the BMV is located."I just want to pump for my son," Culhane said. "And I wanted it to be known that no one deserves to be treated like that in the workplace. No one."Culhane denies harassing anyone during her time at the BMV and feels she was fired for complaining about lack of space to pump.The BMV says they do have a private location in the Indiana State Government Center where she worked in accordance with the law and the State's Support for Nursing Mothers Policy, 2479
Julian Rai spends a lot of time in his car.“Currently, I’m a Lyft driver and I deliver for Grubhub, Postmates, and Doordash and Instacart,” Rai said.With the increasing demand for people to deliver your packages, good, and other items, it’s an industry constantly available with job opportunities, especially with the rise of delivery apps.“I can control my own time,” Rai said. “I can choose not to work if I don’t want to work that day.”“It’s becoming more and more lucrative,” HG Parsa, an economics professor at the University of Denver, said. “In the morning they do Uber. In the afternoon they go to groceries. In the evening they pick up children from school and hospital, then they go home.” He said the flexibility in this type of work can be attractive. But a job like this has its risks.“They do have contact with a lot of people,” Christina Huber, an economist at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, said. “They are really vulnerable. With the rise of coronavirus, it’ll be interesting to see how those industries evolve.”The growing number of COVID-19 cases has woken up the delivery industry to the potential threat.Postmates recently announced a “no contact” option, allowing app users to choose to have their food dropped off somewhere instead of meeting face to face. Rai said this is already happening.“Literally I’ve gotten one. I took a screenshot of this, that said ‘I have the flu, leave it outside the door’,” Rai said.“I think there’s a lot of fear about how the COVID-19 virus is gonna impact a lot of different industries,” Tsinni Russel, an owner and operator at Confluence Courier Collective, a local bike messenger company, said. “There's been a lot of talk about if it’s gonna increase delivery or decrease delivery kind of based on if people want to go out more.”He said one of the cons of working in the industry is the lack of benefits.“We also have independent contractors working for us, which is kind of the same as Postmates and Grubhub and all those other industries, and that’s just because due to the nature of the business. It’s very expensive to have employees,” Russell said.“You don’t have benefits, you don’t have healthcare, you don’t have paid time off, you don’t get sick leave,” Huber explained.Delivery workers are also exposed to the elements more frequently.“When it’s snowing outside or raining outside and people don’t want to leave their house, that’s probably when we get the busiest and make the most of our money,” Russell said.“Bad weather usually means good business for us,” Rai added.As the industry continues to grow, Huber said she sees the increasing demand from the consumer side for fast, convenient delivery.“I think we kind of reached this tipping point,” she said. “It was the smartphone's availability for the consumer and the ability for the producers to develop these apps that are so convenient for people, combined with these other large companies that got us used to the free shipping and home delivery.”Workers hope the industry -- and general understanding from customers -- will grow with it.“It’s important to remember that the people who are delivering your food,” Russell explained. “They’re just regular working class people who are just trying to make a living, so just treating everybody with respect is an important thing to do.” 3336
JUPITER, Florida — It's now a sprawling sex trafficking investigation involving many jurisdictions and ensnaring wealthy, powerful suspects, but it began with a health inspector observing curious details suggesting women might be living at a Jupiter, Florida, day spa.Since at least July, after a state Health Department employee alerted police to signs of human trafficking, authorities had suspected Orchids of Asia Day Spa was providing more than massages and facials. Their suspicions were buttressed by a preliminary investigation that uncovered a seemingly all-male clientele and internet postings describing the spa as a "rub and tug," according to a police affidavit.Police requested the Florida Department of Health conduct a "routine inspection," and the department sent one of its inspectors there November 14. She reported back that the spa housed two rooms with beds, sheets and pillows, the affidavit said. There were also dressers containing medicine and clothing, as well as a fridge with food and condiments, it said.The findings, police and the health department determined, were "consistent with individuals living inside," the affidavit said.Taking a closer lookThis led a Jupiter detective to ramp up the investigation. Investigators pulled bags from a Dumpster and found a ripped-up ledger, credit card receipts and napkins wet with semen, the affidavit said.Police staked out the business, watching man after man enter the spa and leave after 30 minutes or an hour, the affidavit said. They also conducted traffic stops on customers leaving the business, who confirmed they had not patronized the day spa for its advertised services, it said.After obtaining a search warrant, investigators caught several johns -- including, allegedly, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, 1818
