SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A fire destroyed an abandoned building in Barrio Logan early Wednesday morning, but no injuries were reported.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, crews were called to the structure fire in the 3500 block of Dalbergia Street at around 2:50 a.m.By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already consumed much of the building. It took at least an hour to stop the fire from spreading.A deputy fire chief at the scene told 10News that crews have battled fires at this same address multiple times in the past.10News learned a fire occurred at the same location on April 14, and before that on Dec. 26, 2019.Additionally, on Oct. 25, 2019, a fire erupted inside of the same building; a trash can fire was reported on the property six days earlier.The cause of Wednesday’s fire is under investigation, and there is no immediate word on whether the fire is somehow connected to any of the previous incidents. No injuries were reported in any of those incidents.No one was inside at the time of Wednesday's fire. 1053

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former North County contractor who pleaded guilty to several charges, including grand theft, received a five-year sentence on Monday.Prosecutors said Marc Morningstar owes thousands of dollars to more than a dozen former customers. Team 10 first exposed Morningstar in early 2017 after several people contacted Team 10 about his questionable business practices. Morningstar pleaded guilty to failure to file a tax return, two counts of grand theft of personal property, and using personal identifying information of another person. He also admitted to two misdemeanors—failure to secure payment of compensation and contracting without a license.The judge sentenced him to local custody. He will receive credit for the time he has already served, which was more than 200 days. He also owes 13 victims nearly ,000, according to deputy district attorney Amy Lafer.During the hearing, Morningstar’s girlfriend Maria Meeuwisse requested to address the court. She said she is a victim of Morningstar as well.“He will not be living with me when he gets out, whenever he does get out. He has used my social security number,” she told the judge. Meeuwisse previously pleaded guilty to her role in the scheme, which included a misdemeanor of contracting without a license and failure to secure payment of compensation.Judge Timothy Walsh said that Morningstar has to “rethink the way he approaches his life.” 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says.The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel.They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says.The drinks will be available throughout the summer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego State University football team announced Friday it has added a game against the Brigham Young University Cougars in December to complete its shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The team initially received its schedule from the Mountain West Conference Thursday with a "TBA" game on Dec. 12. That game will now be played against BYU in Provo, Utah.It will be the second straight season that SDSU ends its regular season with the Cougars. Last year on Nov. 30, San Diego State defeated BYU, 13- 3, in what ended up being the Aztecs' final football game at SDCCU Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the series and improve to 8-21-1 all-time against Brigham Young.The BYU game will be the sole non-conference game for the Aztecs, excepting any possible post-season play.San Diego State opens its season at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, against UNLV on Oct. 24.
