(KGTV) -- A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police said he broke into a Chula Vista woman's home and took a shower.At around 4:30 a.m., a resident called 911 to report a stranger in her home using her shower, prompting her to flee. She said the man she did not know somehow entered her home as she slept.When officers arrived at the home on Orange Avenue, they called on the man to come out of the house, but he refused to leave and locked himself inside the bathroom.After about an hour, officers entered the house through a window and were able to take the man into custody.The unidentified man was taken to jail, but there is no immediate word on what charges he faces. 715

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - After hours of listening to public comment, the Chula Vista Planning Commission decided to table and continue an item that would bring a new recreational storage facility to the city's Eastlake area. The proposed facility would store 80 to 100 vehicles, like boats or RVs, on land between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated town-home community.Homeowners begged the planning commission to not accept the plans for the facility saying it would be an eyesore for their properties and lower their property values. The property manager of Titan Storage also made his case before the commissioners, citing the need for the facility in a part of town that is growing quickly. RV owners asked the commission to consider accepting the plan because they say surrounding RV lots are full, forcing them to store their vehicles across town. Ultimately, three commissioners said they could not support the plan as presented and voted instead to continue the item to a future date, giving the storage company time to present a revised plan. So far, no date is scheduled for the next public hearing on this issue. 1143

Christiane Amanpour will officially replace Charlie Rose on PBS stations across the country.The move was made official at the public broadcaster's annual meeting on Tuesday. It has been in the works for five months, ever since PBS stations began replaying Amanpour's CNN International program.Those half-hour Amanpour rebroadcasts were an interim replacement for Rose's 11 p.m. talk show, which was cancelled last November after women came forward to accuse him of sexual harassment and misconduct.Now Amanpour is expanding to an hour, like Rose's show used to be. The show will have a new name, "Amanpour & Company," and a stable of regular contributors. The changes will take effect in July."I'm delighted to expand my role at PBS from interim to permanent along with this remarkable diversity of voices and views," Amanpour said. "Never has the time for exploring our world and America's place in it been so urgent."Her statement also alluded to Rose's exit and the reason for it: "I am also thrilled to be a female filling this role at this time!"The expansion was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.Amanpour is CNN's chief international correspondent. Her weekday program "Amanpour" has been on CNN International since 2012. The expanded edition will continue to be shown on CNNI, which is primarily available outside the United States. The PBS deal will give her a bigger U.S. audience.The expanded program is being described as a "collaboration" between CNN and the powerhouse New York City public broadcaster WNET. The financial terms were not disclosed.Amanpour will continue to host mainly from CNN in London while four new contributors will join from a WNET studio in New York. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista school rallied around one of its own students faced with tragedy Thursday night.Camarena Elementary hosted a fundraiser for the family of Aura Mancilla, a mother who was murdered earlier this month.“She was here [at Camarena] almost every day trying to help out her daughter and our community,” said her friend and PTA President Karina Jones. Chula Vista Police said David Bell shot Aura Mancilla and her aunt, Patricia Garcia, in Mancilla’s home.  Thankfully, Mancilla’s daughter, Iyali, wasn’t home.  Bell later took his own life.The Camarena community organized a dinner fundraiser Thursday night where local vendors brought their food trucks and tents and donated 20% of the proceeds to the family. “It’s something that you want to take care of that child to make sure that she’s still loved and that we’re here for her,” said Jones.Chula Vista Police said they still don’t have a motive for the two killings. 989

(KGTV) -- Police arrested a 33-year-old transient in connection with a series of fires set in a river bottom area of Chula Vista since early summer.Chula Vista police said Alejandro Gonzalez was taken into custody Sunday after officers responded to a reported brush fire near the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue.According to police, Gonzalez was spotted by officers “walking quickly away from the scene of the fire.” Officers made contact with him and during questioning they found Gonzalez “in possession of several lighters.”Gonzalez was described as a transient known to frequent Chula Vista’s river bottom area.In a news release, police said: “During questioning by officers, Gonzalez admitted to intentionally setting several brush fires in the river bottom area over the past 5 months. Gonzalez claimed he was setting the fires due to hearing voices. Gonzalez was taken into custody by officers and later booked into county jail on multiple counts of arson.”Police linked Gonzalez to the following fires:May 24: 2300 Faivre StreetJune 14: 2300 Faivre StreetSept. 16: Third Ave. and Beyer St.Sept. 20: 1700 Fourth Ave.These fires erupted in the river bottom area since April, but investigators have not located or identified a person connected to them:April 30: Fourth Ave. and Beyer St.June 5: 1700 Fourth Ave.June 13: Fourth Ave. and Main St.Aug. 14: 100 Jacqua St.Meanwhile, Chula Vista police and fire investigators are still trying to determine who is responsible for setting a series of fires in the city from Sept. 17-19.
