HARLEM, Manhattan — A 100-year-old woman in Harlem is serious about filling out the census. Heading to the streets with a bullhorn this week to celebrate her birthday, Katherine Nelms Nichson bellowed to her neighborhood to fill out the census.“Be counted in the census," she said at the corner of Lenox Avenue and 135th Street. "Come up off your butt."The deadline is weeks away. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis.As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent.The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools. Now, a year later, some feel the movement has shifted.“Certainly, after the #MeToo movement, what we have seen [is] survivors have more safe spaces to go to, to access support,” says Bridgette Stumpf, a sexual assault advocate with the Network for Victim Recovery of D.C. “Unfortunately, with the Times survey just over a month ago, that said of women surveyed 60 percent say their environment of reporting sexual harassment assault doesn’t feel any different than a year ago.”Decades-old allegations threatened Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation. Just this week, Special Counsel Robert Mueller says someone offered a woman money to fabricate sexual harassment claims against him.“It doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is, there’s this sense in politics that winning is the most important thing,” Stumpf says.A new poll finds found 4 in 10 surveyed believe the movement has gone too far. The nation is split along party lines, with 75 percent of Republicans saying the #MeToo movement has gone too far, compared to 21 percent of Democrats.Sexual assault advocates say that can have an impact on victims coming forward or being believed.“From a survivor’s perspective, if you already felt the criminal justice might not be a space where you’re believed, your willingness to think that that’s going to get better in this political moment is probably not likely,” Stumpf explains. 1614

The good Samaritan driver said he saw the thief take off from the parking lot in a suburb of Cincinnati and told the dad to get in his car.Then they chased him together."Oh my god, he stole my truck! My kids are in the truck!" a man who identified himself as Courtney Wells yelled in a 911 call. "I'm in the car with somebody. We're chasing him. He stole my kids! Please, I got three kids in that car."The dispatcher asked Wells to calm down and tell him where they were driving. After a few moments, Wells came to a shocking realization."Did he turn? Oh my god, I think we lost him," Wells cried.The driver told the 911 dispatcher that he just happened to be there when the thief took off."I saw what happened so I said, 'Come on!"The thief sped off and crossed the center line several times trying to elude them, police said."We were so close. We were right there ... Oh, god, he was flying," the driver said on the 911 call.The suspect got away from them, but all ended well when the children - two 4-year-olds and a 1-year-old - were found safe and the suspect was arrested, police said.Someone claiming to be the father later posted a Facebook message that thanked the driver who helped him. He mentioned that the driver is wanted by police."Thankyu big s/o for all the help. He chasin this car down wit 5 warrants ... God was watching ova my babies," the post said.Police said 33-year-old Howard Mullis stole the SUV just before 2 p.m. after the father went in the Pit Stop convenience store. Police said he left the engine running with the three kids in the backseat.Mullis had been hanging around outside the store for hours, said an onlooker."The guy had been sitting right in front of this trash can all morning long, so I guess he was just waiting on somebody to pull up," said Keith Lipscomb.Another man said he heard the commotion in the parking lot. He got choked up talking about it."I heard somebody hollering and screaming that they are stealing my car and they have my kids in the car," said Dennis Cooke. "You got me kind of teary-eyed. HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. -- A local sheriff’s department has issued a warning to parents about a marijuana candy that seems to be making the rounds.The HTC-infused gummies were recently found by deputies in Hancock County, Ind.“They are gummy candy squares, but not your average fruit snacks,” the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department shared in a Facebook post Wednesday morning. “These are THC gummies.”If you look closely, you can see the letters THC printed on each piece of sugar-coated “candy.”“If you come across these, contact your local law enforcement office,” the department’s post said.The drug tip line in Hancock County is 317-477-DRUG.  658
