ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Xie Xiaoyan, the newly appointed Chinese ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union (AU) on Friday presented his letter of credence to Jean Ping, chairperson of the AU Commission (AUC) at his office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.After presenting the credential letter to Ping at the AU headquarters, Ambassador Xie held talks with the AUC chief on the relations and cooperation between China and the union of 54 member countries.The Chinese government has constructed a state-of-the-art office complex and conference hall for the AU with an outlay of around 125 million U.S. dollars, a project that demonstrates the friendship between China and Africa.

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Beijing has seen a declining trend in newly built ordinary apartments in the past 11 months of this year, said a report released by the Beijing Real Estate Association on Friday.That average price of 13,914 yuan (about 2,194.23 U.S. dollars) per square meter from January to November went down 6.3 percent from the yearly average housing price of 14,847 yuan per square meter in 2010, also the target set by the municipal government in attempting to control soaring house prices, said the report.It is expected that the real-estate market in Beijing will maintain the gradually declining trend. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have discovered that blind optimism is related to brain's frontal lobes which are associated with processing errors, according to a British study published Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience.Scientists at the University College of London scanned brains of volunteers who were asked to estimate their personal likelihood of involving in negative events, like a divorce or cancer,  before and after given the average probability of these events occurring.They found that the volunteers who estimated lower probability (or the more optimistic ones) than the given one raised their estimates a little bit later while those estimated higher probability altered their estimates much more.Through the brain scanner, scientists saw there was less activity in the volunteers' frontal regions when the information given was worse than expected while more activity when the information was better than expected. It suggested that the more optimistic people neglected the negative predictions."The more optimistic we are, the less likely we are to be influenced by negative information about the future," said Dr. Tali Sharot, lead author of the study. He added being optimistic clearly had some benefits, "but it can also mean that we are less likely to take precautionary action, such as practising safe sex or saving for retirement. So why don't we learn from cautionary information?"

NANJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in China's eastern Jiangsu Province on Sunday intensified their search for the suspect in an armed robbery in the province.Police have increased patrol and initiated a blanket search for the male suspect, who shot and robbed a man in front of a bank in Nanjing, the provincial capital, on Friday, the provincial public security bureau said in a statement.In Nanjing, special armed police and police cars have blocked major roads, with many others searching in public places. Two helicopters are used to facilitate the search.The provincial police authorities also offered a reward of 100,000 yuan (15,850 U.S. dollars) for information leading to the arrest of the man believed to be in his 40s.The suspect shot a man who had just finished withdrawing 200,000 yuan in front of a bank on Nanjing's Dongmen Street at 9:50 a.m. Friday. The robber then took the money and hopped in a car that sped away from the scene of the crime, Pei Jun, deputy chief of the Nanjing public security bureau, said Friday.Pei said the suspect is believed to have used a gun to kill six people and injure another two in six robberies that took place in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, and Chongqing municipality since 2004.Firearm possession is illegal in China.
