KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Plaza Academy teacher Justin Gillespie is bringing hip hop production to his classroom.The class is called ‘The Beat Academy of KC’ and is the 5th and 6th hour at school for students.“It's the only program in Kansas City that teaches kids how to make hip hop production,” Gillespie said.Gillespie launched the program back in August.“It's been something I've done in my personal life,” Gillespie said. “I've been a professional musician for 15 years and it's been super rewarding.”From beats to rhythms, students take their creativity to a whole new level.“I'm excited to go here everyday,” freshman Thom Van Til said. “I get joyful when I come here, like it helps me calm down,” 8th grader K’ron Lyons said.The class is producing more than just quality hip hop, it’s also producing higher grades and more engagement from students.“Justin would probably say you cannot perform because your grades is bad, so he encourages me to like make sure I do my work,” Lyons said.Students plan to perform what they’ve been working on at the Beat Academy Block Party alongside Kansas City hip hop artists like Ces Cru, JL & Info Gates, Adrian Truth and Suli4Q. The school is raising funds to build a recording studio this summer, to make more courses available to students next year.  1328

Just minutes after being criticized by the president of the United States, Gov. Andrew Cuomo defended his establishment of a panel to review a federally authorized COVID-19 vaccine, and said the president's threat to hold back distribution in New York was retaliatory and personal.In interviews with MSNBC and CNN, Cuomo said New York is one of a handful of states with such panels, created due to public concerns over the safety of a shot, with fears that the race to an effective coronavirus vaccine had become politicized."An overwhelming number of Americans are worried about political interference...by the president," he said.The point of the review panel, he said, is to give New Yorkers peace of mind that the vaccine is safe.In a Rose Garden address touting the success of COVID-19 vaccine trials, President Donald Trump slammed Cuomo over a recent policy to essentially double-check federal authorization for a vaccine.Trump said the vaccine would be available in the spring for essentially the entire country, except for New York."As soon as April, the vaccine will be available to the entire general population, with the exception of places like New York state where, for political reasons, the governor decided to say, 'I don't think it's good politically.' I think it's very bad from a health standpoint, he wants to take his time with the vaccine," Trump said.Trump's last day in office is Jan. 20. KENOSHA — In his first time speaking publicly since his arrest, Kyle Rittenhouse told the Washington Post that he "would have died that night" if he hadn't brought a gun to a Kenosha protest where law enforcement officials say he shot and killed two men.Unrest broke out in Kenosha following the Aug. 23 police shooting of Jacob Blake. Police said Rittenhouse, 17, is charged with the homicides of two men during the night of Aug. 25. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - An 11-year-old girl told the San Diego County Sheriff's Department she was nearly kidnapped Tuesday afternoon near Jamul Primary school on Lyons Valley Road.The child told deputies she was walking on a dirt trail around 3:49 p.m. when she was approached and forcibly grabbed by an unknown man. She was able to escape, suffering only a minor abrasion on her arm.Deputies and the Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter searched the area but were unable to find any suspects or evidence.In a sketch released by the department, the man has a distinct scar on his cheek and appears to have a droopy eye. The Jamul Dulzura Union School District is working with the sheriff’s department to keep students safe. All schools in the district will start at their normally scheduled time, but deputies will have extra patrols at Jamul Primary before and after school for the rest of the week.Detectives from the Sheriff's Rancho San Diego Station are handling the investigation. The suspect was described as a thin man who is clean shaven, wearing a dark ball cap, a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and either a red or maroon shoes.  1183
