SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The brand new Continental Apartment complex in Little Italy isn't like its upscale neighbors.It's made up of studios, some smaller than 400 square feet, and offers very little parking. That's why the starting rent is "just" ,550 a month, about 35 percent below market for the trendy area. "The rent is high in San Diego because of simple math - supply and demand," said Jonathan Segal, the architect who designed The Continental.Segal says costly approval delays and fees are contributing to that very supply crunch. The Continental, no exception, was delayed for two years. Segal says he paid almost million in fees for the building. But he's specifically perplexed by how the city charges what are called Developer Impact Fees. The money goes to uses like parks, fire, library and transportation.The city charges as much as ,000 per unit, depending on location, not size. That's why the city fee on developers could be disproportionately impacting rent prices for smaller units. In other words, if a developer takes a building and creates 40 apartments, that developer would have to pay that fee 40 times. Alternatively, if that same developers takes that same building and does just one large unit, that developer only pays the fee once. Now, there's a growing push at City Hall to change how the city calculates the impact fee. This week, a city council committee held a preliminary discussion on the fee's future. One option, endorsed by City Councilman Scott Sherman, is to do it by square foot. That way, building more, smaller units won't increase costs on developers - and ultimately renters or buyers. "If you were to do it by a square foot process, then a developer would come in and say, 'you know what? I can build two units at 0,000, instead of one at 0,000,'" Sherman said. A 2016 report from the housing commission said flat fees create a disincentive for developers to create more, smaller units that could help ease the housing crunch. Segal says changing how the fee is calculated could give him more latitude to offer lower rents. "I may be able to reduce my rent because I want to be more aggressive," he said. Segal paid about ,500 per unit in developer impact fees for the Continental, totaling 0,000 to the city. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The manager of a Cricket Wireless store in Pacific Beach is hoping the public can help identify two men involved in tagging the back of the store. Blake Beadle, the store manager, said newly installed cameras captured two men approach the store on Garnett Avenue on Monday night at around 9:30 p.m.One of the men approached the back of the store and appeared to spray paint something on the back wall. Meanwhile, the other man stood watch.Beadle said he had just painted over the spot a week and a half ago, when vandals had hit the same spot. “It seems like as soon as we paint over it, within a few weeks it gets tagged again in a similar fashion,” said Beadle. He reported the latest incident to police. He said he hopes the video can help identify the suspects. 792
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man accused of driving into a bicyclist and taking off will have to face a jury. The Oct. 2 crash on State route 67 in Ramona left the victim, Michelle Scott, on life support. Police say the man behind the wheel was Chase Richards, who allegedly kept driving for two miles with the bike lodged in his car. Prosecutors say he dismantled and disguised parts of his car to conceal the evidence.
