SAN MARCOS (CNS) - Palomar College will break ground today on a new on-site food pantry that will help meet the massive demand of students facing food insecurity.The future Anita and Stan Maag Food and Nutrition Center will offer a modern, bigger home for the college's food pantry, which has been in operation for over three decades. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Ysidro School District named a new superintendent Thursday night. Gina Potter has been named the 9th San Ysidro School Superintendent in the last five years.In 2013, Manuel Paul resigned on corruption charges. He pleaded guilty two years later and was sentenced to two months in federal prison.The district hasn’t had a permanent superintendent since September when Julio Fonseca resigned amid allegations of financial wrongdoing.Jose Arturo Sanchez-Macias then stepped in but stepped down two months later following questions regarding payments to himself and his predecessor.Parents and teachers in the district say they want results to create a stronger learning environment they say students deserve. 749

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A report of another car found burning in a driveway is raising questions about a possible fire starter targeting vehicles in Santee.On Shaggybark Drive, Michelle Genshaw and her husband were pulling out of their home two weeks ago -- just before 4:30 in the morning -- when they saw flames in their neighbor's driveway.  A 2007 Acura TL was on fire."It looked odd because there were flames coming out of the front and back of the car, like two separates fires," said Genshaw.Genshaw's husband banged on the door, waking the Arnold family.  Together, they put the fire out with a hose a few minutes later.  Catherine Arnold is thankful the fire didn't spread, but she tells us the car is a total loss."It's really upsetting.  It was my father's car and he passed away and it was the last thing belonging to my dad that I had," said Arnold.Sheriff's investigators were called out and concluded it was arson."We talked to police and they said they smelled gas," said Genshaw.A week and a half later, car alarms sounded along with a Mother's Day inferno on Pearlwood Road.  Neighbors discovered a newly purchased Ford Mustang convertible torched in a driveway.  Mason jars with a flammable liquid were found near the gas tank. SAN FRANCISCO (KGTV/AP) — California’s education chief has applauded the state’s two largest school districts, Los Angeles and San Diego, for this week’s decision not to reopen classrooms this fall amid rising coronavirus cases. But Tony Thurmond says the same rules need not apply in counties with low rates of infection. In a media briefing, Thurmond says that in counties where the number of cases is low, schools could reopen for in-person classes as long as they follow the state's guidance on physical distancing and wearing face coverings. “Everyone shares the desire to reopen schools and agrees that the best place for children to learn and thrive is in the classroom connected with caring teachers and staff. We also understand that schools are more than a place of learning: They provide critical necessities like meals, relationships with caring adults, and support for working parents,” said Thurmond. “But we can only open schools if it is safe to do so. As the largest educational agency in the country, our stance has been consistent during this pandemic: Science, data, and safety must guide any decision about reopening a school. Sears Holdings will close another 63 Kmart and Sears stores following the 2017 holiday shopping season.On Thursday, the company made the announcement to employees at the affected stores, which span 26 states.The closings affect 45 Kmart stores and 18 Sears stores.
