OXON HILL, Md. -- For sisters Nikki Howard and Jaqi Wright, life comes down to a handful of ingredients.”Love, peace and cheesecake,” Wright said. It’s cheesecake that started them off on a new journey, while the two were furloughed during the federal government shutdown two years ago.“We went through the holidays just praying that it would let up,” Wright said. “And it didn't.”“So, for New Year's Eve service, I made sweet potato cheesecakes,” Howard said.Wright continued, “She gave them to me put it in the fridge. I had no idea, until I asked, ‘Who made those?’ And she said, ‘me.’”Howard said her mother and Wright began eating some of it, before her mom declared, “she said, ‘it's so good you can sell it,’ and light bulbs went off.”That is how their small business, called “The Furlough Cheesecake,” came to be. At first, they started by simply selling them online, but it quickly snowballed from there, right into area Walmart stores.“I had no idea that that one cheesecake would change everything,” Wright said. Now, they’re going a step further. At National Harbor near Washington, D.C. they just opened their first physical storefront.“So, we started our business during a furlough and we opened a store during a pandemic,” Wright said. “It makes us sound crazy, honestly, but it just happened this way.”They are fortunate. The pandemic is hitting many small businesses hard and Black-owned businesses especially so. According to data from the U.S. Census, compiled by economists at the University of California - Santa Cruz, between February and April, the number of African-American owned businesses dropped by 41%. Economists now estimate half of all African-American owned businesses may never reopen from their COVID-19 closures. At The Furlough Cheesecake, they know timing is everything.“We just took a leap of faith,” Wright said.Faith that has guided them through two – separate – tough economic times.“There's so many people out there struggling and suffering,” Howard said, “and being a minority-owned business, you know, we feel a responsibility to shed a good light on our community.”It’s all just one part of their unusual recipe for success. 2175

PHILADELPHIA — A federal appeals court in Philadelphia has rejected President Donald Trump’s latest effort to challenge the election results in a case expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court if Trump appeals. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals echoed a string of other courts in finding his campaign offered no evidence of any election fraud. Instead, the court said “the campaign's claims have no merit.” Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani called the election process fraudulent during oral arguments in a lower court last week, but offered no proof. Circuit Judge Stephanos Bibas, a Trump appointee, wrote Friday that “calling an election unfair does not make it so.” 673

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — A divided U.S. appeals court has ruled that the Trump administration can end humanitarian protections that have allowed hundreds of thousands of people from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti and Sudan to remain in the United States. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday lifted a preliminary injunction that had blocked the government from ending Temporary Protected Status for people from those four countries. Since 1990, the policy has granted temporary legal status to people from countries affected by natural disasters and civil conflict. The legal status is often extended, but the Trump administration decided to end it for several countries. 688

Police departments across the country have been getting more diverse, but there are conversations happening now about further improving diversity in new officer hiring.A new analysis from The Washington Post finds many major police forces are still whiter than the communities they serve. For example, in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, 49% of residents are racial minorities, but 83% of officers are white. And in Philadelphia, 77% of the population is non-white, but 59% of officers are white.University of Maryland criminal justice professor Maria Velez has been researching the impact of this as it relates to crime.“In communities that are predominantly African American, as percentage black goes up in a neighborhood, that's often been thought of as a risk factor for violent crime, but what we find is that in cities where there is, representation in terms of the city council, having a black mayor, having a civilian review board, having prior levels of unrest actually renders that relationship insignificant,” said Velez. She says when cities have more minorities on their police force, that signals accountability and receptiveness. And that filters down to the neighborhood level where it starts to create a sense of trust.“At the end of the day, this is good for both the communities and the police right, because the police need to be able to do the work that they need to do to help with things related to crime, but they can only do that if the community trusts them and is willing to engage with them and work with them,” said Velez. She stresses having more black and Latino officers is a step in the right direction. However, departments also have to make sure there is institutional change, where police are held accountable from outside the department. 1775

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Officials have made an arrest in the cold case of Alissa Turney, a 17-year-old girl who went missing in Arizona in 2001.The Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced second-degree murder charges against Alissa's stepfather, Michael Roy Turney, according to a press conference Thursday.Alissa went missing at the end of the school year in 2001 and was first reported as a runaway by Michael Turney, according to officials.Michael called in the runaway report, telling authorities that she had left a note and was going to California. In 2008, new information was brought to light and officials began a criminal investigation into Alissa's disappearance. Officials conducted 200 interviews with coworkers, friends, and family. When a search warrant was issued on Michael's residence, they discovered a bombing plot, at which point he was brought into custody in 2008.Officials say Michael took a plea deal and served 10 years in prison in the bombing plot, unrelated to Alissa's disappearance. He was arrested Thursday afternoon by police in Mesa in connection to her presumed death. Details on what evidence led police to believe they had enough proof in the case were not made immediately available.During the press conference, officials credited Alissa's sister, Sarah Turney, for her perseverance in this case. 1337
