NOGALES, Ariz. -- Towns on the border of the United States and Mexico face a double-edged sword. International trade continues, with only small impacts from COVID-19. But these border towns are feeling a strain from the lack of visitors.“We thought 30 days, then we thought 60 days, then we thought 90 days,” Bruce Bracker said, reflecting on the past five months since a national emergency was declared over COVID-19.The town of Nogales, hugging the Mexico-Arizona border, historically sees plenty of visitors.“It was bustling to the point where if we needed to walk from one building to the other, you wouldn't walk on the sidewalk because it was too crowded,” Bracker explained. Bracker worked in the family business, a store near the border that opened in 1924. He said he worked there for about 30 years, before he said they had to close it.While the bustle has slowed over the decades, COVID-19 and non-essential travel bans halted foot traffic altogether.“Our customers are 95 percent from Mexico, so they closed the border. We can't do nothing,” business owner Frank Baek said. Baek had stopped by his store that day, even though the doors were closed to any possible customers.Very few stores on the main shopping stretch next to the border in Nogales were open.“Everybody is just kind of concerned and worried about how and when and if we’re going to move forward past this,” Tim Carter, a manager at Oasis Cinema, said.Most tourism-based communities share the same sentiment. But what makes border towns unique is that they’re also essential, thanks to international trade.“You saw a lot of people all over the country no longer go to work or work from home, in this community that didn't happen,” Jaime Chamberlain, president of Chamberlain Distributing, said. “Almost all of our citizens were deemed essential workers because you had to...the food supply chain is so important.” Chamberlain Distributing works with farmers in Mexico, importing their crops and distributing to wholesalers, retailers, and foodservice.“We market and distribute that product for them in North America,” said Chamberlain, whose business may have slowed down a bit, but it never stopped.“As the rest of the United States slowed down, Nogales kept on doing exactly what we were doing before COVID,” he said. “The efficient flow of trade is extremely important to this community.”Right now, his warehouse is pretty empty. Not because of demand, but because of the time in the season.“We've imported Mexican fruits and vegetables through here for over a century, so we feel a tremendous responsibility to our country...to have the available supply,” he said.That holds true for most border towns.“Major flows of products that are shipped or trucks and trains and cars, are still crossing and so that trade is down a little bit but not much,” said Robert Grosse, a professor of international business at Arizona State University.Grosse said we haven’t seen anything on this scale since the short downturn with the financial crisis in 2008.As trade continues, Bracker and other business owners wait for the news that the border can reopen to non-essential travel as well.“It’s going to be really interesting to see if there's a pent up demand or really what's going on,” Bracker said.“We’re 22,000 people here in Nogales, Arizona, but on a daily basis our city grows between 50,000 and 55,000 people,” Chamberlain said.And it's the people that help fuel their economy. “The majority of our sales tax comes from Mexican shoppers coming over to shop on the American side,” Chamberlain said. “All of our budget is based on sales tax, the majority of it.” 3645

NEW YORK — An Army veteran who just celebrated his 100th birthday won a fight to stay in his Brooklyn home on Tuesday.James Been served in World War II as a radio operator and celebrated his milestone birthday on June 19.Been has lived in a brownstone on Halsey Street in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood since 1927, and he says the house has been in his family for generations.Been has lived an extraordinary life. During the war, he served in an all-Black regiment known as the Harlem Hell Fighters."I served in the 93rd Division in the South Pacific against the Japanese from 1942 to 1946. Instead of buses, there were buggies going downtown here. It's a wonderful feeling to remember those historic events," Been said.Last year, Been was shocked to find out there was a foreclosure case filed against him.He said he couldn't repay a 0,000 home equity loan he secured in 2006 when he was 84.Belinda Luu, Been's lawyer, works with an organization called Mobilization for Justice. She said it was "wrong" that Been was being forced out of his home."There are so many mostly Black homeowners who have built these communities, like Bed-Stuy, and they are being pushed out," she said.Thankfully for Been, the case against him won't continue. A JPMorgan Chase spokesperson delivered the good news to him on Tuesday."Mr. Been will not be evicted from his home. We are committed to honoring those who have served," the company said.But Councilmember Robert Cornegy of Brooklyn said Been's story represents a much bigger problem for vulnerable seniors."There are hundreds — probably thousands — of people like Been, but they don't want to come forward. NEW YORK CITY — The state of New York has reconsidered a controversial new restaurant rule that would have prohibited customers at New York City eateries from using restrooms while indoor dining is suspended, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio's office.De Blasio's Press Secretary, Avery Cohen, tweeted the update after overnight backlash against the new rule."After discussions with the State, they have agreed to change the rule around bathroom access," Cohen wrote. New information has been released in the FBI and White Lake Township police investigation into the murder of professional poker player Susie Zhao. Police were called to find her burned body on July 13 at 8:05 a.m. in the secluded Pontiac Lake Park in Oakland County.RELATED: Man accused in poker player's brutal death had lengthy criminal historyAccording to court documents obtained by 7 Action News: She was identified by fingerprints. She was bound with zip-ties, and sexually assaulted with a large object before being "lit on fire until she died.”Cell phone records show she met with Jeffery Morris the evening before. After Morris was arrested, he told police he picked up Zhao on Watkins Lake Road and they both checked into the Sherwood Motel at around 9:26 p.m.Morris told police they left the motel to buy some alcohol at a party store and returned to the motel.Morris said Zhao left the motel at midnight “and took all of her belongings including her cell phone with her.”According to the court documents, cell phone records indicate that Zhao’s cell phones did not leave until around 5 a.m. And surveillance footage near the motel and phone records show Morris left at that time and drove to the secluded park. Other evidence shows he was there about seven minutes.Days later, the police and FBI would locate Morris and his vehicle in Ypsilanti. A search found several footwear impressions, several hairs, fibers and other items with possible blood stains.Investigators also found duffle bags with Morris’ identification, a fitted bed sheet with apparent blood stains as well as a wooden baseball bat with a possible big blood stain. Those are being tested at the Oakland County Crime Lab.Police said last week the motive for the murder and the reason Morris and Zhao met are still under investigation.Early speculation was "Susie Q," as she’s known in the poker circuit, may have been killed in connection with being a professional player living in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.But now the evidence shows this was home grown deadly trouble that she faced when she met up with Morris, a convicted sex offender. NEW YORK (AP) — A popular online spoof of the children's favorite "Goodnight Moon," reworked for the coronavirus, will be published by Penguin Random House this fall. The Penguin imprint Philomel Books announced Monday that "Good Morning Zoom" is scheduled for Oct. 6. It's written by Lindsay Rechler and illustrated by June Park.
