As part of a National Park, the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge in Williamson County, Tennessee is a beautiful architectural sight for many. But for some, it’s become a place of pain and grief.“I lost my sister, who was 25, to suicide at the bridge,” Sarah Elmer says.Trish Merelo shares Elmer's grief. She, too, lost a family member to suicide. “I lost my 17-year-old son,” she says.Now, Elmer and Merelo have come together over a mutual understanding of how it feels to lose somebody who has died by suicide.“Seeing what a young suicide does to a school, and to a community, and to a neighborhood, and to a family, it’s unimaginable grief,” Merelo says. Merelo’s son, John, was a senior in high school. He was academically gifted and in marching band. His mom describes him as somebody whose heart would make a difference in this world.Elmer’s sister, Danielle, was a mother of two. Elmer describes her sister as smart, caring, and a big mental health advocate.“Now that’s she’s gone, I just don’t have my other half,” she says. The two women are now doing everything they can to prevent other families from feeling the same sorrow. Together, they’ve formed the Natchez Trace Bridge Barrier Coalition.“Ultimately, what stops bridge suicides is a physical structure,” Merelo says. Their goal is to create an 8-foot barrier on the bridge, so it’s not so easy for someone to jump. Until then, they’re thankful for the new call boxes that were recently planted on the bridge by the National Park Service. The call boxes offer a direct line to 911 and the Tennessee crisis number.“I think the crisis line is more for someone who is in that place and needs that counseling," Merelo says. "I think 911 is for them too, but that’s also for bystanders who see someone in trouble and want to get authorities here."With barely any cell service in the area, the women say the call boxes are essential, and they hope they’ll make a big difference for people in need. “If that call box saves one life, then it is worth it,” Elmer says. Letting somebody know they’re loved and cared for is a critical message everyone needs to hear. On the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, you can pick up the phone for support. AURORA, Colo. -- Olive is a 3-year-old girl who loves to cuddle. As sweet as she is, her parents call her a “champ” because her life so far has been filled with countless hospital visits.“She’s such an easy-going baby, but you can tell it really gets to her to be in the hospital with all the IVs and the stickers and medicine and people coming in and poking you every two hours,” said Olive’s mother, Gloria Angel.Olive has a complex heart disease. It has required her to undergo multiple major surgeries, all of which have gone well, thanks to a new method of cardiac imaging. Children’s Hospital of Colorado is leading the nation as the first medical center combining 2D and 3D imaging to print an exact replica of patients’ hearts.“When olive came, we needed to take a picture of her pulmonary arteries because the left one was a little bit narrowed,” Dr. Jenny Zablah said.Dr. Zablah is the Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist who has been working with Olive. She says the 3D image allows the cardiologists to better picture what is going on so they can plan to fix the problem.Next, a soft 3d model is printed which gives doctors an opportunity to physically work with the model – determining how the veins and arteries will react to the implantation of stents and other devices during surgery.“It’s really cool that they’re using such advanced imagery. I was really grateful to know they were using the best of their technology to take care of her,” Angel said.Not only can surgeons anticipate the condition of the heart prior to surgery, but Dr. Zablah says they’ve also cut radiation and procedural time by more than half.“Every cath procedure involves radiation which increases risk of things like cancer. So, the main goal is trying to do every procedure in the cath lab with the least radiation possible,” Dr. Zablah said.And less time means patients won’t be under for so long.“What was really exciting about it is that they knew what they were up against before they got in there. Because the longer a kiddo is under anesthesia, the risks go up for negative things to happen,” Angel said.Once doctors are done with the model, they use it to give families a deeper understanding of how the heart functions. Then they’re allowed to take it home.“It’s kind of comforting in an abstract way,” Angel said. “You’re just like ‘wow.’”Although little Olive is expected to live a normal life, the model will always be a reminder of the challenges she overcame in her youngest years.“I never thought a tiny human being would teach me about strength. But she has. As the federal government develops a response to keep millions of Americans afloat as businesses shutdown during the spread of coronavirus, Sen. Bernie Sanders released a plan that goes far beyond what most on Capitol Hill have proposed. Sanders said on Tuesday that Americans should be eligible for a ,000 a month payment from the government. His proposal came as voters in Florida, Illinois and Arizona went to the polls for the Democratic primary. Sanders struggled on Tuesday as rival Joe Biden won in Illinois and Florida. "My guess is we will be spending at least trillion in funding to prevent deaths, job losses and prevent an economic catastrophe," Sanders said.
