The wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Rebecca Zahau focused Thursday on the thoroughness of the investigation, with the lead Sheriff's detective on the case taking the stand. Zahau's death was ruled a suicide by four different investigative agencies but the Zahau family believes Rebecca was murdered by her boyfriend's brother, Adam Shacknai. The questioning by David Elsberg, attorney for Adam Shacknai, was aimed at showing investigators left no stone unturned. Elsberg's initial focus was on dispelling the scream that a neighbor reported may have come from the Coronado mansion around the time of Rebecca's death.  As Adam Shacknai's attorney pointed at areas of an overhead projection screen of the Coronado mansion, Detective Tsuida said the reported scream actually came from an area northwest of the property, toward the beach, and not from the balcony area where Rebecca Zahau was found dead. The attorney also showed a series of photos of footprints on the balcony, including bare prints that would support Rebecca standing on the balcony and near the balcony's edge. The questioning by Elsberg went on to the collection of potential DNA evidence and the intricate detail work involved.  Detective Tsuida testified that none of Adam Shacknai's DNA was found on the rope or knife, or several other items that might suggest he had anything to do with her death. 1480

The U.S. reported 2,473 deaths caused by COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest number of deaths linked to the virus in a single day since the height of the pandemic in May.According to the COVID Tracking Project, the nearly 2,500 deaths are the most the U.S. has seen since May 7 — the deadliest day of the pandemic thus far, when 2,769 COVID-19 deaths were reported.Tuesday also marked the sixth-deadliest day since the pandemic began.Deaths linked to COVID-19 have been on the rise since October — though the 7-day rolling average of deaths linked to the virus has dipped in recent days, likely due to a lack of reports from the Thanksgiving holiday. From Oct. 1 to Dec. 1, the 7-day average of reported COVID-19 deaths has more than doubled from 705 to 1,520. The rise in deaths mirrors a frightening rise in COVID-19 cases. According to the COVID Tracking Project, the U.S. has recorded at least 100,000 new cases of the virus every day since Nov. 3. Since that time, the rolling 7-day average of new cases has nearly doubled from about 85.000 a day to about 159,000 a day.And health experts expect deaths and caseloads to further increase in the coming weeks. Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, says the U.S. finds itself in a "very dangerous place" following the Thanksgiving holiday. She says anyone who attended a Thanksgiving gathering last week should assume they are infected with COVID-19 and take appropriate precautions. With more than a million Americans boarding airplanes on Sunday alone following the Thanksgiving holiday, health experts fear cases will skyrocket in the coming days.They also expect hospitals — already overtaxed by current COVID-19 caseloads — to admit even more patients with the virus. The Sarasota (Fla.) County School District confirmed they are looking into a racially offensive promposal that was posted to social media.A spokesperson for the district confirmed the Riverview High School senior posted a picture that they worry will be a disruptor to the school and student safety. The post made to Snapchat reads, "If I was Black I'd be picking cotton, but I'm white so I'm picking U 4 Prom?"The district said they have not concluded if the 18-year-old will be banned from prom as it's an ongoing investigation. Sarasota County Schools also said they sent a text alert to parents Monday morning about the situation and that they plan to have more information late Monday. The student, who Scripps station WFTS in Tampa is not identifying, also posted an apology to social media. The following message was sent to parents and students on Monday morning:  930
