Sounds of gunfire prompted emergency calls and a lockdown at a North Carolina high school, but a public information officer says there is currently no evidence of an active shooter.Officials with the Pender County Sheriffs' Office are still searching Topsail High School as a precaution, and Pender Schools remain on lockdown.The high school went into lockdown at 6:30 a.m. ET due to reports of the sounds of gunfire. Pender Schools confirmed in a tweet that it was investigating an active shooter at Topsail High School at about 8 a.m. It added that all of the district's campuses on the "eastern side of Pender County" are on lockdown.Pender Schools later confirmed that the noises "from the top of the building" were mistaken for gunfire. They added that it was determined that there was no weapon and no shooter.There currently are no reports of injuries.More on this as it develops. 930

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who just gave birth to her second child, is attempting the rare move of changing longstanding Senate rules in order to accommodate senators with newborns.The Illinois Democrat has submitted a resolution this week that would allow senators to bring a child under one year old to the Senate floor during votes, which they currently cannot do."After many positive, constructive conversations with her colleagues on both sides of the aisle, Sen. Duckworth is glad to be able to offer this legislation to ensure no senator with an infant is prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities -- and send a message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies," said Kaitlin Fahey, Duckworth's chief of staff, in a statement provided to CNN on Monday. "She is optimistic that this will be resolved quickly."Duckworth gave birth to a baby girl on April 9 becoming the first US senator to do so while in office. The senator decided to take her maternity leave in Washington rather than in Illinois so as to be on hand and available to cast her vote, if needed.Leading up to giving birth, the senator openly expressed concerns how the Senate rules might impact her ability to do so while caring for her newborn."If I have to vote, and I'm breastfeeding my child, especially during my maternity leave period, what do I do? Leave her sitting outside?" Duckworth brought up in February during a Politico "Women Rule" podcast.There are a whole host of Senate rules that would make voting difficult for a senator while caring for her baby -- being unable to hand the baby off to a staffer, being unable to bring a child onto the floor and being unable to vote via proxy.Duckworth's resolution must first pass the Senate Rules Committee and then approved on the Senate floor to take effect. Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt, R-Missouri, and the panel's top Democrat, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, have both been receptive to the rules change.Blunt and Klobuchar released a joint statement Tuesday."As leaders of the Senate Rules Committee, we support Senator Duckworth's resolution and intend to move it swiftly through our committee," they stated.The committee might take up the rule change as early as this week, according to a congressional aide.Quick passage could allow Duckworth to be able to vote with her newborn on the floor as early as next week. Sprint and T-Mobile's have abandoned discussions about a potential merger.The companies issued a joint statement Saturday, after a week of speculation, saying they "have ceased talks.""While we couldn't reach an agreement to combine our companies, we certainly recognize the benefits of scale through a potential combination. However, we have agreed that it is best to move forward on our own," said Marcelo Claure, Sprint's CEO.T-Mobile CEO John Legere also said there were benefits to consolidating, but added that, "we have been clear all along that a deal with anyone will have to result in superior long-term value for T-Mobile's shareholders."Shares of Sprint and T-Mobile tumbled Monday after rumors emerged that merger talks between the two companies were fizzling.On Monday it looked as if SoftBank, the Japanese conglomerate with a majority stake in Sprint, would end negotiations because of concerns about the ownership structure of the combined business, according to reports from Nikkei and The Wall Street Journal. Claure, the Sprint CEO, is also a member of SoftBank's board .Exactly what issue ultimately severed the talks was not immediately clear Saturday.
