DALIAN, July 26 (Xinhua) -- China has stopped the Dalian oil spill from reaching international waters, an official said Monday, admitting the clean-up work was "arduous."Dai Yulin, vice mayor of Dalian City, Liaoning Province, where oil pipelines exploded on July 16, said workers had contained the oil slick, stopping it from reaching the open sea."But the next step, which is clearing it up, is an arduous task," Dai told a press briefing."Some of the slick has been mopped up, but it's not easy to get rid of the rest," he said.The clean-up has involved 266 oil-skimming vessels and 8,150 fishing boats, Dai told reporters.Maritime agencies and oil companies have laid down more than 40,000 meters of oil barriers and 65 tonnes of oil absorbent mats, he said.Despite this, oil could still be seen on some beaches.An explosion hit an oil pipeline 0.9 meters in diameter at 6:20 p.m. on July 16 and triggered an adjacent smaller pipeline to explode near Dalian Xingang Port. Both pipelines are owned by China's No.1 oil and gas producer CNPC.Improper injections of strongly oxidizing desulfurizer into the oil pipeline after a 300,000-tonne tanker had finished unloading its oil caused the explosion, results of a State Administration of Work Safety and Ministry of Public Security investigation showed Friday.

MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China has played a role of great importance during the founding and development of G20, Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich said on Monday."Without China's participation, it would be much more difficult for the group to discuss or solve the developmental problems of world economy. Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. What makes her unique is her mother.Jini, the panda mother, gave birth to the female cuba at the age of 17. She is compared to a human in her sixties, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan Province said in a statement.The female cub weighed 125 grams. She was born at 14:41 p.m., four hours after Jini went into labour. Both the mother and cub are in good health, said the statement.Jini, a resident of Beijing Zoo, was sent to the Wolong center this March for the cub-birth purpose because the research center has developed expertise in breeding techniques.With a 20-year breeding history, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center is home to the world's largest captive panda population. It has helped Beijing Zoo and Chongqing Zoo and many zoos in other countries in breeding and feeding pandas.The new cub is Jini's second. It is the eleventh cub born at the Wolong center this year."Pandas come into heat in the spring and give birth in autumn. This is the main reason for the panda 'baby boom'," said Dang Chunxiang, an expert with the Wolong Center.More than 10 other pandas are expected to give birth over the next one or two months at the Wolong center.Jini delivered her first cub "Qingqing" in 2007 when she was thirteen and a half years old, which was itself rare amongst pandas. She also entered record books with her pregnancy that lasted 324 days. Generally, pandas deliver in 120 -150 days.The length of a panda's pregnancy depends on its health and nutrition level, according to experts.About 1,600 giant pandas are living in the wilds in China. Sichuan Province and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu are the home to most of them. Another 290 pandas are in captive-bred programs worldwide, mostly in mainland China.

CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.
