SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Dance is a way to lose yourself and escape. For students taking the Ballet for Me! Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class. That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class. This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman is throwing his hat in San Diego's race for the next mayor.Sherman (District 7) pulled candidate intention papers this week, signaling his impending run in 2020, according to documents.Sherman becomes one of the only GOP candidates in the race to replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who's also a Republican. Bay Park resident Richard Hansen, a former Democrat who left the party in 2016, entered the race in September as a Republican. In 2020, both Faulconer and Sherman will term out of their respective positions.RELATED: Poll: Gloria pulls early lead in San Diego mayoral raceSan Diego's top Democratic mayoral candidates square off in debateThe Republican councilman will enter the race against several Democratic candidates, including councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and community activist Tasha Williamson. In a September 10News/Union-Tribune poll, of these three candidates, 46 percent of respondents were undecided on who they'd support, while 36 percent sided with Gloria, 15 percent supported Bry, and 8 percent favored Williamson. That poll was also based on whether these three names were the only ones on the ballot.Candidates have until Dec. 5 to file their nomination papers with the city. The position is technically listed as "non-partisan."Sherman's district covers Miramar, Tierrasanta, Serra Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Valley, Grantville, Allied Gardens, Del Cerro, San Carlos, and Lake Murray. 1484

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cheer on floats, marching bands, and colorful cars will roll down the streets of Hillcrest and Balboa Park in July for the annual San Diego Pride Parade. The parade, which is San Diego’s largest single-day civic event, attracts some 250,000 people every year. Marching begins at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Avenue and Normal Street. The parade moves west down University, turns south on Sixth Avenue, left onto Balboa Drive, and ends at Quince Drive. The parade is free for spectators, but you’ll want to bring cash to buy water or food from one of the businesses along the route. Another 10News pro tip: Bring a hat or umbrella to provide shade from the sun. Can’t make it to the parade? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – California and two other Western states have issued travel advisories that include a 14-day quarantine for those visiting the states or returning home from outside travel.California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee put the advisories into action for their respective states on Friday. The announcement comes as travel is expected to ramp up for the holidays. The advisories urge “visitors entering their states or returning home from travel outside these states to self-quarantine to slow the spread of the virus. The travel advisories urge against non-essential out-of-state travel, ask people to self-quarantine for 14 days after arriving from another state or country and encourage residents to stay local.”CALIFORNIA TRAVEL ADVISORY ANNOUNCEMENTIn addition to the self-quarantine, the advisories recommend travelers “limit their interactions to their immediate household. The advisories define essential travel as travel for work and study, critical infrastructure support, economic services and supply chains, health, immediate medical care and safety and security.”Newsom said in a news release, “Travel increases the risk of spreading COVID-19, and we must all collectively increase our efforts at this time to keep the virus at bay and save lives.”Brown added, “COVID-19 does not stop at state lines. As hospitals across the West are stretched to capacity, we must take steps to ensure travelers are not bringing this disease home with them. If you do not need to travel, you shouldn’t. This will be hard, especially with Thanksgiving around the corner. But the best way to keep your family safe is to stay close to home.”“Limiting and reducing travel is one way to reduce the further spread of the disease. I am happy to partner with California and Oregon in this effort to help protect lives up and down the West Coast,” Inslee said. The governors did not say how long the advisories are expected to last. 1981

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Behind every mammogram Dr. Lisa Watanabe looks at is a woman waiting, and hoping, for good news. Dr. Watanbe is a radiologist, and the Chief Medical Officer for CureMetrix, an artificial intelligence (AI) technology company focused on early breast cancer detection.Their FDA-cleared software is able to learn, using millions of mammograms, to identify, mark, and score anomalies. "Cancers that were missed by a radiologist were detected by the machine, some of them weren't even small, sometimes they were just obscured by dense tissue," said Dr. Watanabe. She says the technology has found breast cancer up to five years earlier than it was found by the human radiologist. "It may detect features on mammograms the human eye can't detect," said Watanabe. The technology is already being used by doctors around the world and is also available to anyone with internet access.Women can pay 9 to get their own CureMetrix second opinion by uploading their mammogram to the online portal DocPanel.Dr. Watanabe says the software is not meant to replace humans but rather help them do their job better.San Diego resident Amanda Caniglia says the technology gave her peace of mind. "As a woman and going for my first mammogram and knowing the family history, there is a lot of anxiety going into it, you don't know what to expect," said Caniglia. While Caniglia's initial mammogram results came back normal, she wanted a second opinion because of her family history of cysts, tumors, and cancer. When the CureMetrix results also came back as normal, it was a huge relief. "it really lowered my anxiety and gave me peace of mind because I was able to know I'm good to go, I'm cancer-free."The technology is lowering the number of false positives and catching cancer earlier, giving more women the chance to find a cure in time. 1846
