BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation in China, is likely to rise 4.1 percent in October after accelerating to a 23-month high of 3.6 percent in September, the Bank of Communications forecast on Wednesday.The bank, China's fifth largest lender, said in a report that the index would see moderate dips in the coming two months amid decreasing demand due to the slowing economy.But oversupply of liquidity at home, surging food prices, rising labor costs, and pressures caused by imported inflation would mean very limited room for the index to drop, the report said.The report predicts China's CPI would rise 3.1 percent for the entire year of 2010, topping the government's target to keep the inflation rate under 3 percent.It also forecast food prices would rise further during the first half of 2011.Food prices, which account for one-third of weighting in calculating the CPI in China, climbed 8 percent in September, pushing the CPI to the highest level in nearly two years. Food prices had risen 7.5 percent in August, 6.8 percent in July, and 5.7 percent in June.

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's financial sector should better serve the transformation of economic growth pattern in the country while keeping high alert on possible risks, Vice Premier Wang Qishan said Friday.Wang said the financial sector should give full play to monetary policies and continue to optimize lending structures to boost weak points like agricultural sectors, small enterprises and innovation.Lending to sectors with excessive energy consumption, high emission of pollutants, or with overcapacity, must be strictly limited, he told a group of provincial or ministerial-level officials who attended a training seminar in Beijing.The seminar closing on Friday focused on how to promote the reform of financial sector in China while guarding against financial risks, which Wang said was highly necessary considering current situation.Wang urged officials at various levels to continually learn to upgrade their knowledge and working abilities in the financial sector.As China's financial sector was still in an initial growth phase, it should unswervingly boost reforms and its opening-up, promote mechanism innovation and complete the development of the financial market system, he said.

HANOI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A trade fair was held in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi on Saturday with participation of companies from Vietnam and China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.At the fair, more than 100 companies from China's Guangxi brought here nearly 200 projects in various sectors including resources development, agriculture products processing, agricultural machinery production, sugar production and high technology.Ma Biao, chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said at the fair that Guangxi and Vietnam have seen strengthened trade and economic links in recent years.Vietnam has been Guangxi's largest trade partner for eleven years, said Ma. VIENNA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China supported the proposal of establishing a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone, a senior Chinese diplomat said here Thursday.China had always stood by strengthening the international non- proliferation regime, and committed to advancing the universality, effectiveness and authority of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna.To this end, China supported building a Middle East nuclear- weapon-free zone, maintained Israel should join the NPT as a non- nuclear-weapon state at an early date, and put all its nuclear facilities under comprehensive safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Hu, who was addressing the IAEA board meeting, which started Monday."Meanwhile, all countries in the region should conscientiously fulfill NPT obligations, as well as sign and ratify the IAEA safeguards agreements and its Additional Protocols," Hu added.He went on to say China welcomed the proposal endorsed in the final document of the NPT Review Conference this May, which calls for convening an international conference in 2012 on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction in Middle East.Hu also stressed the willingness of the Chinese to work with the international community for a non-nuclear-weapon area in the Middle East, and achieving peace and stability in the region.

ZHENGZHOU, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake that hit central China's Henan Province Sunday afternoon levelled 24 houses and left 12 students injured, local officials said early Monday morning.The quake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale and with a hypocenter depth of 8 kilometers, truck Zhoukou City at 4:58 p.m., according to the China National Seismological Network.Twenty four houses in Taikang County collapsed while 12 students in a middle school were injured, who are currently in hospital.In Fugou County, about 40 houses were reported to have cracks or other damages.Tremor was felt across eastern Henan, including provincial capital Zhengzhou City.
