SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An infectious disease expert for Scripps Health reminded San Diegans Tuesday to get influenza shots early this season to avoid potentially overloading the region's medical system during the COVID-19 pandemic."If you normally get the flu shot each year, then now is the time to make arrangements for your vaccination, and if you rarely or never get a shot, then this is the year to start doing it," said Dr. Siu Ming Geary, an internal medicine physician and vice president of primary care for Scripps Clinic Medical Group.Symptoms for typical seasonal influenza, such as fever, coughing, headache and fatigue, are similar to those for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, and both viruses attack the respiratory system. It remains unclear how the two viruses might interact or affect overall sickness when infecting the same person."We don't yet know how bad this year's flu season will be, but it is possible to get both the coronavirus and the flu at the same time," Geary said. "Both can result in severe illness and complications, including hospitalization and death. While there is not a readily available vaccine for coronavirus, we do know that being vaccinated for influenza is the best thing you can do to protect yourself from getting the flu."Last year, 105 people died from the flu in San Diego County, while the virus killed as many as 62,000 nationwide. The 2017-18 season was even worse, with 343 deaths in San Diego County and 79,000 nationwide."While some experts may disagree about the optimum timing to receive the flu shot, most, including those at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommend getting the shot by the end of October," Geary said. "As for this year, with the coronavirus pandemic still in full swing, it's not too early to get the flu shot right now."While flu vaccine supplies have sometimes run thin in the past, that shouldn't be the case this year, Geary said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was operating a panga boat carrying several undocumented immigrants when it capsized off the coast of southern San Diego County earlier this year, killing two men aboard, was sentenced today to nearly seven years in federal prison.Julio Cesar Murillo-Arce, 42, pleaded guilty earlier this year to federal charges stemming from the Feb. 3 boating accident off the coast of Imperial Beach.He was sentenced to 78 months in prison in connection with the boat fatalities, and an additional five months for violating the terms of his supervised release stemming from a separate maritime alien smuggling conviction last year, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.According to court papers, Border Patrol agents spotted the boat in the early morning hours of Feb. 3. It began experiencing engine trouble about 150 yards off the coast, prosecutors said, then eventually became inoperable.Prosecutors say Murillo-Arce told the others aboard not to identify him as the boat's captain, then dove into the water.The boat was capsized by a large wave, sending all six occupants into the sea. Four were able to make it to shore, but Ramon Ponce-Rodriguez and Modesto Rodriguez-Ballesteros did not.Ponce-Rodriguez was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, while Rodriguez-Ballesteros was initially hospitalized in critical condition and died Feb. 4.The surviving occupants of the boat told investigators that the boat's captain abandoned the vessel and swam away, despite being told some of the people aboard could not swim. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today for allegedly stabbing another man in an apparently random attack in a public restroom along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, 16 days after being released from prison.Martin Alvarez, 33, is accused in the Aug. 16 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Wagley, who was found mortally wounded at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the lavatory at 700 Grand Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing on a bicycle following the stabbing, San Diego Police Department Lt. Andra Brown said.The lieutenant said Alvarez, who matched the suspect description, was detained in the area and later arrested on suspicion of murder.The alleged motive for the slaying was unclear, but a prosecutor said the victim had no connection to his attacker.Deputy District Attorney George Modlin called the stabbing a ``random act of murder'' in which Alvarez allegedly attacked the victim from behind, stabbing him in the neck. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Former San Diego City Councilman and Reform California Chairman Carl DeMaio announced his intent Monday to enter the race for the only Republican-held congressional seat in San Diego County. In a statement announcing his candidacy for the 50th Congressional District seat, DeMaio framed the decision to run as one of ``fight or flight.'' He also lambasted the state's Democratic dominance, arguing the state has shifted to the left in an untenable way. ``Too many Californians are fleeing our state because of the extreme socialist agenda being imposed on us by Democrat politicians, but I refuse to flee: I choose to stand and fight,'' DeMaio said. ``In California, voters have mostly only been given two choices: socialists or ineffective cowards.'' The 50th District seat is currently represented by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, who was indicted last August, along with his wife, on five dozen criminal charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud and record falsification, for allegedly misusing campaign funds. Margaret Hunter has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with prosecutors. Her husband maintains his innocence. Hunter won a sixth term last November, defeating Democratic candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar with 51.7% of the vote. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California State Treasurer John Chiang will visit San Diego Tuesday as part of a five-city tour to announce the launch of CalSavers, the state's new retirement savings program.CalSavers will serve as a state-run retirement plan for private-sector workers at companies with five employees or more. State officials boast that accounts provided by the program are portable and paid for by payroll contributions. Gov. Jerry Brown authorized the program's implementation in 2016 and enrollment will open next July.Program guidelines require qualifying employers to enroll their employees in the program within the next five years, but employees themselves can opt out. State officials estimate CalSavers will help roughly 7.5 million California residents save for retirement."CalSavers' goal is to escape a vicious, societal circle, where each successive generation of Americans is on track to retire poorer than the last," Chiang wrote in a March opinion piece in the Orange County Register. "If we continue this trend by doing nothing, the strain on taxpayer funded health and human services likely would undermine the long-term financial stability of our state."The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association filed suit against the state in May over the program, arguing it violates federal law to establish a state- run retirement savings program.
