CHICAGO, Ill. -- With the U.S. Postal Service stretched thin and millions voting by mail, some voters have taken extreme measures to ensure their vote counts. In some cases, they’ve traveled hundreds of miles to cast a ballot.Following the postmaster general’s controversial decision this summer to decommission nearly 700 mail-sorting machines across the country, Sarah Alana was worried about voting by mail.“We all have a choice and what's going on right now with the Postal Service is another matter entirely. Clearly, it's not working,” she said.In Georgia, where she has lived and voted since 2013, nearly a dozen mail-sorting machines were removed. Still, she applied for an absentee ballot.“It was sent out the same day,” said Alana. “Three weeks later, no absentee ballot. And I was getting just so mad.”Even more of a problem, she’s currently staying in Durango, Colorado, dealing with respiratory issues.“I'm here to see if the dry air is a little bit better for my breathing problems,” she said.In Georgia, more than 1.1 million absentee by mail ballots have been returned, trouncing the nearly 155,000 cast in 2016. But, another half million mail-in ballots have yet to be returned.Sarah Alana decided not to take any chances. Despite being high-risk for complications from COVID-19, she bought a 5 plane ticket and made the 1,600-mile journey from Durango to Atlanta to vote in person.“I went through three airports. I took two flights. I was in three Lyft rides, which actually, that was scary for me too.”Others have made similar trips, like a woman studying in Chicago who traveled to her home state of Texas to cast her ballot.The children of 94-year-old Mildred Madison children drove her 300 miles to Detroit to vote in person when her absentee ballot didn’t arrive at her temporary address.“Vote. But know who you are voting for and why,” said Madison.Alana says there’s too much at stake this election not to ensure your voice is heard.“I didn't want to be a victim,” she said. “There is no American citizen that needs to be a victim this year. (KGTV) - Southbound Interstate 5 shut down during rush hour Wednesday evening to search a car possibly linked to a robbery for explosives, California Highway Patrol officers said.The car was pulled over about 5:10 p.m. at Main Street in Chula Vista, CHP officials said.San Diego Police said the stop was related to the robbery of the US Bank at 3201 University Ave. in North Park at 4:48 p.m. during which a man referred to explosives.All southbound lanes of traffic stopped at 5:20 p.m. as officers searched the car for explosives. (CNS) - A former part-time Coronado High School basketball coach who engaged in sex acts with a 17-year-old female student was sentenced Tuesday to three years of probation, and may face sex offender registration if he violates his probationary terms.Jordan Tyler Bucklew, 34, was arrested and charged earlier this year after the Coronado Police Department received a report regarding "an inappropriate relationship" between a part-time coach and a teenage student.Bucklew was arrested three days later.According to the original criminal complaint, the incidents took place between December 2019 and January 2020.Bucklew was sentenced Tuesday afternoon following his guilty plea to a felony count of unlawful sex with a minor.RELATED STORIES:Basketball coach pleads guilty to sex charge involving studentCoach arrested for "inappropriate relationship" with student, police saySan Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Popkins declined to impose sex offender registration at the sentencing hearing, but left the option open should Bucklew violate the terms of his probation.Bucklew was also ordered to serve one year in custody, which Popkins said could be served in the County Parole and Alternative Custody electronic monitoring program, if he's eligible for the program.Another court hearing was set for early March, at which time other custody options will be explored, should he not be accepted into the program.Other probationary terms include no association or contact with minors.Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang read a letter from Jane Doe, who the prosecutor said did not wish to appear at Bucklew's sentencing hearing.The victim wrote that she's been in therapy on a weekly basis for the trauma she suffered, with no end in sight to the lingering feelings of guilt."Every day I find a new way to blame myself for what happened," Jane Doe wrote. "These feelings bring me to believe that I do not deserve anything, that I do not matter, that I am a constant burden to the world."Wang and the victim's parents urged the judge to impose lifetime sex offender registration due to a variety of factors, including the significant age difference and Bucklew's position of authority in the relationship as a school employee.Wang said Bucklew groomed the victim and maintained his relationship with Jane Doe in a secretive manner, indicating he was aware it was inappropriate. Wang said that upon his arrest, Bucklew directed the girl to delete messages sent between them.Wang said Jane Doe leaned on Bucklew for emotional support amid various issues going on in her life, which Bucklew took advantage of to initiate the physical component of the relationship.Bucklew addressed the court and said he was "extremely apologetic" to Jane Doe and her family.He said he's always tried to make himself available as a friend or coach for people to talk to, as happened with Jane Doe."I see now and I acknowledge my actions were unlawful and where I should have drawn the line, I didn't," Bucklew said. "I'm sincerely sorry."I never intended to put Jane Doe or anyone else in a position where their safety, security or welfare was threatened in any way whatsoever. I'm so sorry for everything that's happened."Through tears, Bucklew told the court, "I'm not a predator. I'm not a threat to the community. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Thursday that it plans to reopen August 3.According to the district, only distance or virtual learning will be available on August 3. No on campus instruction will be available.On August 28, the district will transition to "Phase 1" where 10 percent of students will be allowed on campus at any given time.As public health orders permit, the campus will move into phase two, where 20 percent of students will be allowed on campus. Phase three will see 50 percent or more of students on campus plus "some activities." No timeline was given for phase two and three.According to the district, families who opt out will have the option to fully enroll in virtual instruction beginning August 28. 781
