SHANGHAI, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader has urged Shanghai, the country's major economic hub, to use the global financial crisis as a driving force to pursue economic restructuring. Jia Qinglin (C), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visits Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Equipment Co. Ltd., in Shanghai, east China, on Dec. 20, 2008. Jia Qinglin paid a visit to Shanghai from Dec. 19 to Dec. 21.     Shanghai should focus on developing equipment manufacturing, modern logistics, financial services, electronic commerce, culture innovations and capsulation, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), during his trip to Shanghai from Dec. 19-21 .     Shanghai should try to establish a new advantage in competition and make use of its advantage of having a strong power in science and technology, said Jia.     The city should center its economic growth on increasing domestic demands while trying every means to maintain a stable growth in export, the CPPCC leader said.     During his stay in the city, Jia visited an exhibition on the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and studied the construction of the expo zone, with company of Shanghai Party Chief Yu Zhengsheng and Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng. He urged the city to do a good job in preparations for the world expo. He called for a pro-active employment policy.     During his visit, the top political advisor visited leading officials of the Municipal Committee of the CPPCC, the Municipal United Front Department, and local branches of non-communist parties and the Municipal Federation of Industry and Commerce.     He urged them to play roles as "think tank" for the government and a channel to convey people's concern to the government.

LIMA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Peruvian counterpart Alan Garcia Wednesday in Lima for talks on how to deepen comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and the Latin American nation.     The meeting took place soon after the Chinese leader's arrival in the Peruvian capital from Havana.     In a written statement issued upon his arrival here, the Chinese president said he will exchange views with Garcia and other Peruvian leaders on ways to deepen bilateral ties.     Following their talks, the two leaders will attend a signing ceremony of documents on cooperation in trade, customs, quality control and poverty reduction.     Peru is one of China's major trading partners in Latin America,with two-way trade totaling 6 billion U.S. dollars in 2007, a 53 percent increase over the previous year.     While in Lima, Hu will attend the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which will focus on the world financial crisis, support for the Doha round oftrade talks, food and energy security, and regional economic integration.     The Chinese president will also meet with leaders of several APEC member economies on the sidelines of the APEC meeting.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Vice-Premier Li Keqiang visited the 2008 China Beijing International Energy-Saving and Environmental Protection Exhibition on Monday.     Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, spoke highly of the achievements made by the country and the national capital in terms of energy efficiency and pollution reduction.     LI said China has large potential in the resources and environmental sector and it should focus on energy efficiency and environmental protection. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (C) speaks during the conclusion session of the national conference of economic planners, in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 14, 2008.     BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang stressed the importance of maintaining stable and healthy economic growth through domestic demand expansion and economic restructuring on Sunday.     Addressing a national conference of economic planners concluded here Sunday, Li said China's economy was in face of a grim situation due to the global financial crisis, but the fundamentals and long-term trend of the country's economic development were unchanged.     The economic development was the foundation for solving all problems, Li said, noting that as the central government had pointed out, priority should be given to maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth next year.     This would be achieved through expanding domestic demand, restructuring the economy and transforming the growth pattern, Li said. All would ultimately target improving people's living standard. The national conference of economic planners concludes in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 14, 2008. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang attended the conclusion session of the conference.     He urged local governments to encourage social investment to sustain economic growth, take measures to maintain stable growth in export and step up studies on the global economy to enhance capacities for prevision.     Economic restructuring was an effective way to deal with current global financial crisis, Li said, adding that efforts should be made to ensure employment, improve people's living conditions and encourage technological innovation.     He emphasized the importance of developing the tertiary industry which could absorb large amounts of workers and energy-saving industries which could sustain the country's growth.     He urged the authorities to let the market play a fundamental role in the allocation of resources and step up innovation in corporate management.

SHUIFU, Yunnan, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Jinsha River in south China was blocked on Sunday to make way for construction of a new hydropower project on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.     At a cost of 43.4 billion yuan (about 6.3 billion U.S. dollars), the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Project is expected to be completed by 2015. It will be able to generate 30.7 billion kw hours of electricity a year.     "Electricity generated by hydropower stations will mainly be sold to China's eastern, southern and central regions," said Li Yong'an, general manager of the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation. "Sichuan and Yunnan provinces will also benefit from it." Workers cheer for the damming of the Jinsha River in the construction of the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station which is the third largest of its kind in China.     In addition to providing power, the project will play a role in flood control and farmland irrigation.     About 125,100 people from three counties of Yunnan Province and three counties of Sichuan Province have been resettled to make way for the project.     The Xiangjiaba project is one of a series of hydropower plants China plans to build on the Jinsha River to supply electricity to its economically more developed coastal regions.     The 2,290-kilometer-long Jinsha River, a tributary of Yangtze River, originates in Tanggula Range and flows through Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan.     Water is mostly stored in the river's middle and lower reaches where China plans to build 12 hydropower stations to share a 59.08- million-kilowatts installed capacity.
