A 552-carat yellow diamond was recently unearthed in Canada — the largest ever found in North America.Mining company Dominion Diamond Mines said in a press release on Thursday the diamond was discovered in October at the Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada's Northwest Territories.The "astonishing gemstone" measures 33.74 millimeters by 54.56 millimeters, the company said.It was uncovered in the initial screening process at Diavik's recovery plant, the company said. "Abrasion markings on the stone's surface attest to the difficult journey it underwent during recovery, and the fact that it remains intact is remarkable."Dominion Diamond Mines added the diamond will not be sold in its rough form, and it's too early to determine its value. The company will select a partner to cut and polish the stone.According to the company, this find exceeds a previous record held by the "Diavik Foxfire," a 187.7-carat diamond discovered at the same mine in 2015 by mining company Rio Tinto. (KGTV) -- Summer is nearly here, and the County is preparing for pests. On Wednesday, the first rounds of larvicide will be dropped on 48 rivers, streams ponds and waterways. In previous years, crews sprayed neighborhoods by hand to fight mosquito-borne illnesses like Zika and West Nile viruses. This year, the County will use a helicopter to drop the batches or solid, granular larvicide on the waterways that cannot be treated by hand.The drops will take place about once each month of mosquito season (April to October). Mosquito larvae that ingest the larvicide will be killed, but the larvicide is not harmful to people or pets. The list of waterways equals just over 1,000 acres from Chula Vista to Fallbrook and from Oceanside to Lakeside, according to the County News Center. Protect yourself from mosquitos 864

(KGTV) -- The woman accused of hitting a pedestrian in Oceanside and continuing to drive after his body went through the windshield of her vehicle was found guilty Friday afternoon.A jury Friday found 31-year-old Esteysi “Stacy” Sanchez guilty of murder in the second degree, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and hit and run with death or permanent serious injury.Deputy District Attorney Robert Bruce told the jury that Sanchez displayed a conscious disregard for human life when she drove drunk and ran over 69-year-old Jack Ray Tenhulzen on a sidewalk on Mission Road near the state Route 76 bridge the morning of June 27, 2016.Tenhulzen’s body went through the windshield and into the passenger seat of her car.  The bottom of the victim's leg was severed in the accident but was recovered at the back of the car near the rear window.Tenhulzen was declared dead at the scene.Defense attorney Herb Weston argued that Sanchez was tired and fell asleep behind the wheel and rode up on the sidewalk, striking Tenhulzen. He said Sanchez "freaked out" when she saw the victim's body in her car and kept driving, finally stopping a block from her home.Sanchez was eventually arrested at her home, and she had shards of glass in her hair when taken into custody. Authorities said her blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit about two hours after the collision.Sanchez faces up to 15 years to life in prison. A 2-year-old girl died on Friday after a mirror fell at a Payless Shoes store near Atlanta, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Ifrah Siddique was pronounced dead at a Georgia hospital shortly after being transported from the shoe store. The mirror was reportedly unsecured when it fell on Ifrah.“She had internal bleeding and she lost a lot of blood,” Aqib Iftkhar told the Journal-Constitution. “At least they are fixing it, but still the question is why wasn’t it secured in the first place,” Iftkhar added.Payless Shoes released a statement to the Journal-Constitution responding to Friday's incident. "We are devastated by this tragic event and are fully cooperating with authorities to research and understand the nature of this accident,” the statement said. “Out of respect for the family, no further information will be provided at this time." 897
