BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- The Olympic Media Village opened on Friday for 21,600 domestic and foreign registered reporters, amid some foreign media's concerns about free reporting in China.     Friday's People's Daily, the mouthpiece of China's ruling party, ran a commentary appealing to administrations and common people to "befriend the media."     "To serve the media is to serve the Olympic Games," the article said. "To befriend the media is to befriend the audience."     About 30,000 reporters are expected to cover the Games, the most in Olympic history, which means the number in the audience could be the highest ever too.     "It is through the media that the audience across the world are learning about the Olympics, China and Beijing," the newspaper said. Through rich Olympic news, we are to share the joy of the Games with people worldwide," he said in the speech to officials 30 days before the start of the Games.     Beijing has opened three media centers, the Main Press Center (MPC), the International Broadcast Center (IBC) and the Beijing International Media Center (BIMC). The former, on the Beijing National Olympic Green Convention Center, covers 150,000 square meters, the largest in Olympic history. In the first 12 days since their opening, 23 press conferences have been held at the MPC and BIMC.     At the BIMC website, phone numbers of ministries in China's central government are publicized. And the BIMC staff have received and processed more than 200 requests for interviews, half from foreign media.     Although worries about free news reporting are lingering, covering news in China has undergone notable changes.     A regulation on reporting activities in China by foreign media during the Games and the preparatory period has, since January last year, lifted several rules over foreign reporters. They no longer need approval from the local government's foreign affairs department but only agreement from the people or organizations to be interviewed. In April last year, the Chinese government issued a regulation asking administrations to publicize information that the public should learn about. This surprised Chinese audiences who have become used to a diet of positive news.     As the International Olympic Committee said in its report when choosing Beijing to host the 2008 Olympic Games, the Games would leave a unique legacy to China and to sport. There are reasons to believe that part of the legacy will be a country opening wider to the world.

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Shang Fulin, chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), on Sunday vowed to deepen reform and boost regulation to promote a stable and healthy development of the capital market.     The CSRC would rationally balance the market supply and demand, and regulate the pace of fund-raising, Shang told an interior meeting in Beijing.     The stock regulator would encourage and steer funds into the market for long-term investment and gradually improve the inner market stabilizing mechanism.     China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index have fallen 54 percent from its all time high in mid October 2007. The steep decline came amid fears that the tightening measures would erode corporate profits and the equities supply would overwhelm demand.     Analysts said the regulator has been delaying approvals of initial public offerings over the past couple of months to stabilize market that was hard-hit by weak investor sentiment.     Shang noted the CSRC would boost cooperation with the prosecutors on crackdown on market manipulation, irregular information disclosure, and false information and rumors distributed to manipulate stock prices. HAIKOU, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Higos, the 17th tropical storm of the year, landed in China's southernmost Hainan Province Friday evening, local observatory said.     Higos landed at 10:15 p.m. in Longlou Town, Wenchang City, 19.6 degrees north latitude and 111.0 degrees east longitude. The wind speed at the eye of the storm was 18 meters per second, according to the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Observatory.     It was forecast to weaken and move northwest towards the coastal areas of western Guangdong Province. Delayed trucks are parked at the Xiuying port in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province Oct. 3, 2008, due to the suspension of ferry service.In total, 24,115 fishing boats in the province had returned to port and coastal fisheries staff had gone home. All recreational sporting activities on the air or sea were also suspended on Friday, said Lin Mingzhong, Hainan Provincial Office for Flood, Wind and Drought Control deputy director.     He predicted Higos would have minor impact on the island as the rainfall was expected to be around 100 mm. BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank on Friday said it will continue international cooperation to tackle the global financial crisis and maintain market stability.     The pledge came two days after the People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced an interest rate cut in a co-ordinated global move to revive solvency in the international financial system.     The PBOC on Wednesday cut the benchmark lending and deposit rates by 0.27 percentage points and the reserve requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points amid growing fears of a slowing economy and falling equities market.     "The PBOC will continue close contacts and cooperation with counterparts and international financial organizations to jointly maintain stability of global financial market," PBOC spokesman Li Chao told Xinhua.     The PBOC would closely watch the developments and effects of the crisis and take timely and flexibly measures according to changes in the domestic and international situations to guard against financial risks, Li said.     The global economic slowdown reduced demand for Chinese exports and inevitably affected China's economy, he said.     The central bank was fully confident and capable of dealing with the crisis and maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth.     "China has a huge domestic market and the liquidity is abundant," he said. "As long as we take strong measures to boost domestic demand, the economy has big potential for sustainable growth."     A PBOC statement on the third-quarter meeting of its monetary policy committee said it would take flexible and prudent macro-economic control measures to boost economic growth.     The PBOC was not optimistic in its global economic outlook as intensifying fluctuations in the financial markets had affected the real economy.     It said it would boost coordination between monetary policies and fiscal, industry, export and financial regulation policies to help transform economic growth mode and boost domestic demand to balance international payments.
