SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego Comic-Con announced its “Comic-Con@Home” event will take place on the originally scheduled dates, July 22-26, and the event will be entirely free.After canceling its in-person events at the San Diego Convention Center in April due to “circumstances involving the COVID-19 pandemic and California’s restrictions against large gatherings,” Comic-Con had teased about home events for weeks, finally revealing this week some sense of what that will entail."For the first time in our 50-year history, we are happy to welcome virtually anyone from around the globe," said SDCC spokesperson David Glanzer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mayor-Elect Todd Gloria Friday announced the selection of the top leadership posts for his incoming mayoral administration."I'm proud to announce the appointments of Paola Avila, Nick Serrano and Jay Goldstone to the Gloria administration," he said. "They are a team of talented, dedicated and experienced public servants who will help me lead our city, especially through COVID-19 and get us back on track. I want to thank them for their willingness to step up and serve the people of San Diego."Avila was named Chief of Staff. She has more than 20 years of experience in public policy, community outreach and government relations, including prior service in the mayor's office as deputy chief of staff to Mayor Dick Murphy. Avila is a graduate of the University of California San Diego and lives in Bay Park.Serrano was named deputy chief of staff. A top advisor in Gloria's leadership team for years, he served Gloria in both his City Council and Assembly offices -- most recently as director of communications on Gloria's Assembly staff. He has worked in more than a dozen communities in San Diego as a community representative, is a graduate of San Diego State University and lives in downtown.Goldstone was named interim chief operating officer. He has more than 37 years of local government finance and management experience. He was previously San Diego's COO from 2008-2013 and the city's chief financial officer from 2006-2008 and 2012-2013. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Metropolitan Transit System is increasing bus and trolley services as the economy continues to reopen.MTS will increase weekday midday service on the UC San Diego Blue Line beginning Monday, June 15, followed by service increases on dozens of bus routes in late June."As we continue the regional reopening of our economy, we know more people will need the services that MTS provides. We want people to know that San Diego's transit system will continue to be a safe and reliable option as possible," said MTS Board Chair Nathan Fletcher. "We've strengthened our already-enhanced sanitizing protocols on vehicles and at stations and implemented policies to better protect our passengers and employees. We are now increasing service to help reliability and allow for greater physical distancing of passengers."Beginning Monday, the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley -- which connects the San Ysidro international border to downtown San Diego -- will increase its service frequency to every 7 1/2 minutes from 4:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., and keep 15-minute frequencies until 9 p.m., followed by every 30 minutes until the end of the service day.Weekday ridership on the Blue Line plummeted 69% between February 24 and April 20, from 63,715 daily riders to just 19,787. Since April 20, average weekday ridership has increased 28%, topping out at 25,367 the week of June 1. More frequency will give more opportunity for passengers to practice social distancing on board and on platforms when possible. Service on the Orange Line and Sycuan Green Line will remain unchanged.While trolley service will first be increasing to closely mirror pre- COVID-19 levels, MTS is also making preparations to increase bus service in the coming weeks. Schedules and routes are being finalized. The goal is to provide service increases that meet market demands. MTS reduced weekday service levels approximately 25% on April 13 to address record-low ridership while still providing critical service for essential workers and trips.In addition to service increases, MTS says it also continues to improve its already-strict safety and sanitizing protocols. The latest development on that front is retrofitting buses with germ barriers to better protect bus operators. Barriers will also allow the agency to return to front- door boarding, which gives passengers more room in which to spread out. MTS has only allowed rear-door boarding since April 1 to protect the health of bus operators.MTS continues to operate about 95 bus routes and three trolley lines. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Santa Ana winds and low humidity levels will keep the risk of wildfire high across the San Diego area into Tuesday, as they did for much of last week.To alert the public to the combustion hazards posed by the gusty and arid conditions, the National Weather Service issued a red flag wildfire warning for local mountain and western-valleys communities, effective through 10 p.m. Tuesday. A high-wind warning also will be in effect from 6 this evening through noon Tuesday in those same areas.Outdoor burning, mechanized brush clearing and other potentially spark-creating activities should be avoided over the period, as any fires that develop will spread rapidly, according to the NWS.As of late this afternoon, San Diego Gas & Electric had instituted public-safety power shutoffs in parts of Descanso, Jamul, Potrero, Ramona, Santa Ysabel and Valley Center in a bid to avoid any blazes ignited by transmission equipment. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health posted a beach closure notice today at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park due to water contamination.County officials said sewage-contaminated water flowing from the Tijuana River into U.S. waters represents a health hazard. Closure signs will remain posted in the affected areas until testing shows it's safe to go back into the water from Seacoast Drive to the U.S. Mexico Border.
