SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Port of San Diego's Board of Port Commissioners announced its approval Thursday of a 15-year extension for the San Diego Symphony Association's lease at Embarcadero Marina Park South. The lease, approved Wednesday, includes three 10-year options and one five-year option, allowing the association to lease the park for up to 50 years. The association currently uses the park land for its Bayside Summer Nights concert series, which it started in 2004. The concert series is held on a temporary stage that is assembled and disassembled each year. Later this year, the association hopes to break ground on the Bayside Performance Park project that would include construction of an open-air performance venue with seating for 10,000 as well as various improvements to park features like benches and basketball courts. The new venue also would serve as the permanent location for Bayside Summer Nights. ``The San Diego Symphony is investing a minimum of million in improvements, including many public amenities and better performance facilities, creating a new, year-round attraction on the San Diego Bay waterfront,'' Board Chairman Garry Bonelli said. ``We're confident concert-goers will love the improved access and state-of-the art stage and sound system, and bayfront visitors will love the new and improved part.'' The stage will be designed by London-based company Soundforms, according to the association. The stage will be feature an acoustically engineered shell made of tensile white fabric and will complement the look of the nearby San Diego Convention Center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian near a Logan Heights intersection.The crash happened around 8:50 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, east of Interstate 5 and south of state Route 94, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.A man, whose age was not immediately available, was walking westbound in the left-turn lane of Imperial Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on Imperial, Buttle said.ABC 10News learned the victim was dragged several yards; the driver of the suspect vehicle, described as a silver or gray two-door sedan, fled the scene without stopping.No description of the driver was immediately available.The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to extend an agreement with Southern California Edison to receive emergency planning funds from the utility as it removes spent nuclear fuel from the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station.The county's Office of Emergency Services entered a similar memorandum of understanding with SCE in 2015, through which the company provided radiological emergency planning funds to five jurisdictions around the plant, including San Diego County, through the end of Fiscal Year 2019-20.A county staff report estimates SCE will pay the county 6,500 in the remainder of the agreement.The remainder of the spent fuel is planned to be moved from spent fuel pools to dry cask storage by the end of this summer, but the memorandum approved by the board runs through the end of Fiscal Year 2049 or whenever all spent fuel is removed from the site -- whichever comes first.The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of California do not require decommissioned nuclear power plants to reimburse local jurisdictions for emergency planning, but SCE has agreed to continue paying jurisdictions surrounding the plant, for planning and preparation for radiological emergencies.San Onofre hasn't produced power since a steam leak in 2012, and SCE closed the plant the following year and began decommissioning activities.When the California Coastal Commission voted 9-0 last October to allow SCE to begin dismantling the plant, the canisters were being moved from a "wet storage" facility to a newly constructed "dry storage" facility on the site. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres are scheduled to face an opponent at Petco Park for the first time in 2020 Monday, nearly four months later than planned, playing the Los Angeles Angels in an exhibition game.The March 26 start to the regular season -- which included the Padres opening day game against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park -- was all wiped out by the coronavirus outbreak.Under the revised schedule which calls for the regular season to begin Thursday, teams can play up to three exhibition games. The Padres other exhibition game will be on Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, in preparation for opening day Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park."I think everybody's excited to play somebody else," Padres first-year manager Jayce Tingler told reporters in a Zoom conference Friday. "We've been banging heads for a while. It's going to be really good getting to see another team and just getting to go compete."The Padres played 16 intrasquad games since beginning "summer camp" July 3.Like most sporting events around the world, fans will be barred from attending Monday's game under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.The game will be different from Padre games in past seasons for several reasons.Major League Baseball has instituted a set of health and safety protocols that will effect the game even before the first pitch. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-based medical technology company Phamatech and its CEO have agreed to pay more than million to resolve allegations that they submitted false claims to Medicare and received government reimbursements for unnecessary lab testing, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Friday.Prosecutors allege the company paid kickbacks to a medical clinic, which in return ordered Phamatech lab testing for its patients enrolled in Medicare.Over the course of about two years, Phamatech, which manufactures diagnostic devices and provides lab testing services such as drug and alcohol tests, paid a per-specimen fee to Imperial Valley Wellness in exchange for referrals of urine samples from Medicare beneficiaries, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Many of the samples referred to Phamatech were not necessary and thus ineligible for Medicare reimbursement, prosecutors said.The company, along with its CEO and founder Tuan Pham, agreed to pay ,043,484 to settle allegations that Phamatech violated the federal Anti- Kickback Statute and the False Claims Act.The U.S. Attorney's Office said the allegations were originally brought in a lawsuit filed by former Phamatech employee John Polanco, who will receive 7,392 from the settlement proceeds. 1273
