The United States and Mexico have reached an agreement to change parts of NAFTA, the trade deal that President Donald Trump has derided for years as unfair.Trump announced the agreement from the Oval Office Monday, with Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto dialed in on a conference call.But the deal left open the question of whether Canada, the third country in NAFTA, would agree to the changes -- and Trump himself said he wanted to throw out the name NAFTA altogether."They used to call it NAFTA," Trump said. "We're going to call it the United States-Mexico trade agreement. We're going to get rid of NAFTA because it has a bad connotation."Negotiators for both countries agreed to a new rule that dictates where auto parts are made.Under the current law, about 62 percent of the parts in any car sold in North America must be produced in the region or automakers have to pay import taxes. The new preliminary agreement would require that 75 percent of auto parts be made in the United States and Mexico, according to the U.S. Trade Representative's office.Much of the business world has been worried about Trump's trade policies, and the stock market reacted positively to the news. The Dow rose more than 250 points and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit new highs on Monday.The agreement between the two countries could restart negotiations on NAFTA with all three parties -- the United States, Mexico and Canada.Despite Trump's signal that the deal could lead to a bilateral trade agreement between the United States and Mexico, Pe?a Nieto, through a translator, expressed his "desire that now Canada will also be able to be incorporated in this."Mexico and Canada have stood firm on the importance of maintaining the trilateral format of the NAFTA free trade deal, even as Trump has signaled a desire for individual deals with each country."Canada is encouraged by the continued optimism shown by our negotiating partners," said a spokesperson for Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland."Progress between Mexico and the United States is a necessary requirement for any renewed NAFTA agreement," he said.Negotiations on rewriting the three-country NAFTA agreement began about a year ago.The 24-year-old trade agreement generally prevents the three parties from imposing tariffs on imports from one another. Now, Congress is debating a bill that would provide thousands of dollars in travel tax credits to families."This could be used for airfare, for hotel stays, for meals and attractions within a certain distance away from home, let's say." says Tori Emerson Barnes with the U.S. Travel Association.Modeled after the homebuyer tax credit that was created in the recession of 2008, Barnes says, if passed, this financial incentive would be crucial toward putting the travel industry and the millions of people it employs back to work."Post 9/11, it took about 18 months for the travel industry to come back. From an economic standpoint, this is nine times worse than 9/11, so really what we have to do is get people moving again to get the economy back," says Barnes.The travel tax credit would pay back families 50% of their travel expenses up to ,000. The refund would be for travel expenses made between the time of the bill's enactment and the end of 2021."We know that we need to get people traveling again in a health and safe way so we think that establishing an individual travel tax credit that can help motivate folks and push them a little bit into the market will go a long way. We’ve been working with members of Congress on both sides of the aisle and administration," says Barnes.Chris Gahl of Visit Indy says the travel tax credit would be huge for businesses in Indianapolis."The tourism eco-system is made up of lots of different businesses. Most consumers would think of hotels, airlines, museums, restaurants and bars. But there are also companies that clean linens for the hotels, flower companies," says Gahl.As for easing travelers concerns amid COVID-19, Gahl says, "From Indiana’s perspective, from the capital of Indianapolis, we have taken great strides in putting people first and foremost and the health of our residents and subsequently our visitors.""We all believe that there needs to be appropriate sanitation, there needs to be appropriate barriers in place and we support the use of masks. You know, we think a phased and layered approach is critical to the health and safety of the American public but we don’t think you have to pick between the public health or the economic health of the country," says Barnes.In the Indianapolis area, Visit Indy says more than 83,000 people rely on tourism for their jobs."This goes well beyond the glossiness of hotels and restaurants and wanting a getaway. The University of Cincinnati's Board of Trustees voted Tuesday morning to remove Marge Schott's name from the university's baseball stadium and another space in the school's archive library immediately."Marge Schott’s record of racism and bigotry stands at stark odds with our University’s core commitment to dignity, equity, and inclusion," UC president Neville Pinto said. "I hope this action serves as an enduring reminder that we cannot remain silent or indifferent when it comes to prejudice, hate, or inequity. "This is a very important topic that people gloss over. It's very important for us to realize how fast this did happen. That all it did was coming together, unity, and somebody asking for change."Ramey said Tuesday's vote wasn't a celebration per se, but it has brought awareness quickly and is an indicator of the direction of the country."As an athlete for me personally as an athlete going through UC it was conflicting to play under that name," Ramey said. "It was. I'm going to put my all out and my teammates are going to put their all-out - we're brothers - but at the end of the day that's a conflicting situation to be put in as a black athlete at the university. I don't want that to happen for anybody else coming into the next generation."The Marge and Charles Schott Foundation previously made a statement about the petition."We can ask you to learn from Mrs. Schott's mistakes as well as her great love for Cincinnati," a statement from the Schott Foundation reads. "We fully support the decisions made by the organizations that have received grants from the Foundation."St. Ursula Academy decided previously to remove Schott's name from two of their campus facilities: a stadium and a school building.There was no immediate word from UC when the exterior letters of the stadium name will be removed. There is also a plaque at the stadium.Ramey doesn't have a preference for the new name of the stadium. He's just glad the community will help determine its direction."Alumni Field is what they are throwing around right now," Ramey said. "So Alumni Stadium that would be cool.
