SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego restaurants are taking extra precautions, and going out of their way to care for the most vulnerable neighbors during the stay at home order.Victor Lopez, owner of El Pollo Grill, said he's delivering free meals to seniors in need. "Today we're actually going to send 10 more right now," Lopez said. They've served about 90 customers in three days. When it comes to the bill, he's paying about 70 percent and donations are covering the rest.LISTINGS: Who is open for business in San Diego during stay-at-home order"We have the food, we have the resources, we have a little money left over so we're willing to take the hit," Lopez said. The hit right now is 30 percent, but Lopez said the 37 year old business is focused on community. Across town, D.Z. Akin's is also worried about their customers, "we try between every customer to sanitize ourselves, sanitize the pens, sanitize the counters." Son of the founders, Elan Akin, said he often sees an older crowd.Customers, like Philip McCabe, say they normally see more people. If you would like to help, contact him through the restaurant's Facebook Page. Both Lopez and Akin are running businesses their parents created out of love, hoping they can continue bringing joy and tasty food to their neighbors."What's been nicest to see is how everyone is being positive. They're looking at the opportunity to spend time with their families, to get things done around the house," Akin said smiling. Both restaurants hope to weather the storm. 2838

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some students in the San Diego Unified School District are being allowed to return to campus Tuesday as the district begins the first phase of its reopening plan. The district began the 2020-21 school year on Aug. 31 with a distance learning program for its students. In recent weeks, during the distance learning period, teachers have been working to determine which students they believe would benefit from appointment-based in-person learning sessions.Appointment sessions will be voluntary; the rest of the time, those students will continue with distance learning.SD Unified officials said they’ve also been working with health experts in designing a reopening plan that would ensure all students and staff are safe.Despite the reopening plan, there are some parents who still do not believe it’s enough. On Tuesday afternoon, a group of parents called Reopen SDUSD has scheduled a rally at 4 p.m. in front of the Board of Education building to voice their concerns about the reopening plan. The group, which held a similar rally last month, is calling for a more detailed reopening plan and they want the district to be more transparent.Reopen SDUSD has gathered thousands of signatures for a petition urging the district to allow more students to return to campus.ABC 10News spoke with some parents at the September rally who said they want options because distance learning is not working for them. One mother said her children “dread going on Zoom. They dread being on the computer. They don’t like learning via the screen. They’re just losing a lot of interest, and I end up having to yell at them, ‘Do your work!’ And it’s frustrating because it impacts our relationship in a negative way.” 1725

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Snoopy’s San Diego Comic-Con pop-up store is celebrating the Peanuts gang’s history with NASA and the Apollo 10 mission. In 1969, Apollo 10 used a lunar module to “snoop around” the moon’s surface in advance of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The crew named the module “Snoopy” and the command module “Charlie Brown”. As Gene Cernan, Apollo 10's Lunar Module Pilot once said, "No one remembers Apollo 10—until you tell them our spacecrafts were named Snoopy and Charlie Brown, and they say 'Oh! I remember!' " To honor the 50th anniversary, Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville created “Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10”, a mockumentary demonstrating the ties between the beloved cartoons and the space agency. The film, starring Ron Howard as himself and Jeff Goldblum as a self-published NASA historian, is available free in the Apple TV app. Astronaut Snoopy merchandise, including skate decks and finger skateboards are available at the pop-up shop at 226 Fifth Ave. Fans can also buy replicas of a Snoopy “All systems go” pennant. Astronaut Snoopy plushes, pins, and t-shirts are available at the booth inside the convention center. 1167

The school has also set up a GoFundMe page to help Gomez’s and Suarez-Ojeda’s families with funeral costs and expenses.RELATED: Two San Diegans, Mexican teen shot to death in TijuanaFurther details regarding the murders have yet to be released by authorities.Garcia told 10News her cousin said he was heading to a barbecue in Ensenada on Friday. According to Punto Norte, investigators believe the three killed were taken from an apartment at gunpoint, forced to kneel, and then shot. It's unclear why the teens were targeted.“They’re monsters.
